Local Radio in Accy

I am an exiled "Accringtonian" and I know that in Accy, we have BBC Radio Lancashire, but when I get back, these are the local radio stations I can pick up............
Radio Wave (Blackpool)
The Bay (Lancaster)
Rock FM (Preston)
2BR (Nelson)
Tower FM (Bolton)
Century (North West Regional)
Smooth FM (North West Regional)
Galaxy 102 (Manchester)
Magic 999 (Preston)
Capital Gold 1458 (Manchester)

Which of these is the most popular and most listened to in Accy, or is there one I've missed?

Thanks
Dave :)

Re: Local Radio in Accy

rock fm aint bad but then again most radio stations are the same to repetitive same music same time every day and radio 1 must be the worst

Re: Local Radio in Accy

When I'm in Carnforth I listen to The Bay but when I'm home in Accy I listen to Classic FM, but only to wake up to in the mornings. I never seem to listen to any radio during the day. I'm always flitting about.

You can now listen to radio Lancashire online............Not a great deal of help unless at the computer but just thought I'd mention it.

Re: Local Radio in Accy

Thanks Mitzy.

Although I probably give the impression that I sit in front of my PC all day typing messages on Accyweb I actually tend to pop up and down and back and forth and in and out of the house.

For instance this morning I've been upstairs, downstairs, kitchen, front room and back yard between posts!

If the kids didn't have the TV on I could probably hear the radio as I wandered about (if I had it on that is.)

Sorry WillowtheWhisp I wasn't trying to imply anyone sat at the computer all day I was just pointing out you could get radio Lancashire online.

Re: Local Radio in Accy

:D No, not you Mitzy - I meant someone else who gets the impression from all my posts that I'm an AccyWeb addict. :o

I like to listen to 2BR. Great little station.

Re: Local Radio in Accy

Yes, I like 2BR when I'm back in Accy, I have to say.
I do know about BBC Radio Lancashire on line. I'm glad about it, because despite now being in Hampshire, it allows me to ber able to listen to it - & I frequently do.
With the telly, through Sky, I usually watch Granada & BBC1 North West.

The reason I put the question is I am interested in media studies, & there is a whole clutch of local commercial stations around the North West, many of which I can pick up when in Accy. Although I would expect 2BR to be the most popular generally, I am curious if there are others that are very popular.

Can anyone tell me what has happened to the licence application for the Bee? Its banner is still in the Accy web but its web site is sorely dated! Was it unsuccessful or is the application ongoing?

WillowTheWhisp 17-10-2004 17:23

Re: Local Radio in Accy

I'd forgotten about that until Busman mentioned it. At one time when we started a new thread we got a Bee Ad attached didn't we?

Surely someone must have info on the new radio station, "The Bee"......... Roy???

Re: Local Radio in Accy

Well the advertisement is still there on the main page so presumably the application is still pending.

Re: Local Radio in Accy

As I looked at the posts on this thread this evening, there it was, right below
"Back the Bee for Local Radio", so I assume they're still looking to gain a broadcast licence from the radio authority. :)
I like Radio Lancashire and 2BR when I'm in Accy. When I'm further west and the signal is weak, I like The Bay. :D

When I'm here in Hampshire, I like to listen to Radio Lancashire on line and BBC1 North West & Granada ITV on Sky tv.

(PS I'm glad Stanley got a good result at Aldershot on Saturday, I would have faced a ribbing at work otherwise! )

This ad just came up beneath the thread but it looks a little bit out of date to me.

My first post after being exiled in a country that seemingly does not want foreigners to have internet access, but thats for another post!

Anyway, TheBee have paid for 12 months of advertising here at accyweb... I don't know why the July witton park banner came up as it was supposed to have been replaced. As far as I know the application is still up for grabs and there are 2 other parties involved and they are both from london/somewhere else. The Bee are a local company...

I'll email the main man about it and try to get some more info...

Great news!

Today Ofcom have awarded the new Blackburn local radio licence to The Bee.

This means not only has our years and years of hard work rewarded us, and made me for one a very happy person, but also that Blackburn with Darwen and Hyndburn will have a new radio station in Summer 2005.

Thanks to everyone who has given us support - and watch http://www.thebee.co.uk for all the details over the next few months.

Please use this forum as a way of letting us know what you would like from a new local radio station - or email me direct roy . martin @ the bee .co .uk (remove spaces)
Cheers!

Roy

Thats absolutely great news Roy. And thanks for letting us know so soon after hearing the news yourself! :)

I really do wish you all the best for the radio station as I know you've been working hard on it.

I also hope our members will be able to help you out with suggestions for the new station, although I'm sure the main suggestion will be great coverage of Accrington Stanley! :)

Good luck and I hope to tune in soon!

I too listen to Century but thats mainly because I can stick with the one station all the way to work. otherwise I'd be swapping stations every two minutes.

I saw adverts in the local papers only last week for jobs at The Bee. They're looking for presenters, news journalists and others. Looking at job adverts is a hobby of mine, you can find out all sorts of stuff if you know who's recruiting.

Anyway, Simon Brierley who used to be on the early show on 2br - often listened to him - is the new head of The Bee. They should be on air in September time ish.

Oh, and for my money, 2Br is the best local radio station - but I've recently turned into a Radio 2 girl. Think it must be my age! lol.

well I am stuck on Talk Sport at mo, I love it and although the name suggests all sport there are some great non sport phone-ins especially at night. I listen to it in the car and in the eve on the internet whilst I'm pottering around accy web!

I dont get to listen to the radio much but in the car I still listen to radio 1.

I'm a century 105.4 fan especially in the car. Last night on the way home I couldn't wait to get this side of glossop so I could get rid of the racket on radio 1 & back to century

Re: Local Radio in Accy

I'm afraid I've turned into a Radio Twoie as well, it must be a turning 40 thing Gayle!;)

Love Janice Long, and I am with Less as l love Alex Lester. I do like James Whale though on Talk Sport and often flick between the two.

Car's always on Classic FM though.

Will tune into Bee and give it a listen, and the very best of luck.:)

Radio Lancashire....has really gone down the pan just latley,
its turning into a jingle every five minuites with traffic information,
guess the recording artist , and how many times do you want reminding that you are listening to radio lancashire.
there must be a competition to see which presenters can say lancashire the most in each hour.

I have given up with it ..... Rad 2, for me and Bee

Re: Local Radio in Accy

I alternate between R2 and The Wave on the way to work; I have to or I get complaints from the Staff. Wogan's silly letters make me smile and I have been a fan of Steve Wright for ages, though he is not as funny as he was when he had the afternoon show on R1. At home things are different, it is R3. I tried Classic FM but the station idents and the adverts really got on my t*ts, plus the breadth of music on offer pales into insignificance by comparison with R3.

I must confess I have not really tried online Radio Stations since the sound quality of my laptop's speakers is pretty tinny to say the least.

Anyone had any experience of DAB?
