Can always remember my mate Jim a Glaswegian, used to say to me when I asked for water to put in my whisky, there's a little Scotsman will be crying his eyes out, it took him 10 bloody years to get the water out of that whisky and your putting it back in again:rolleyes::D

Many, many years ago, I was suffering with a very bad cold....himself made me a hot drink with whisky in it.......I asked him if he was trying to poison me and claim the insurance money.
Hate the stuff...poison...nearly as bad as haggis and porridge. |

I have tried all three....and with Haggis I broke one of my cardinal rules in life....never put something you don't like the look of, into your mouth.
Even the thought of that event, gives me the dry heaves.......but I do have a very sensitive gag reflex.......selective too(not activated by poo...vomit...sputum)....I put the selectivity down to the many years in nursing. |

Porridge is delicious with Golden Syrrup on it Margaret -you don't know what you're missing....
Luckily we can now get a full range of cereals in Italy including Quaker oats. When i first moved over here Weetabix and All-bran were only available in the Chemist's as dietary products and cost a fortune! |

This is just a very subtle marketing ploy.
The prententious people who wouldn't be seen dead in Aldi, will now take the risk of being seen. ..and say that they were only there to buy their favourite malt. If there is a convoluted purpose for anything, you can trust me to find it ;) |
Re: Aldi tomorrow 8.12.11
yes, it goes under my radar because it isn't what I call 'foreign muck'....and himself and Ma love it(as does my next door neighbour who I cook a hot meal for a couple of times a week0...so it is worth cooking as there is more than just himself eating it.
I like plain food...roast beef, yorkshire pud(home made) fresh steamed veggies. I like a good steak...with a rim of yellow fat........3-4 minutes each side. I love good home made puddings too, but don't make them these days...they head right for my waist(or what used to pass for my waist) I like a home made meat and potato pie, with pickled beetroot or red cabbage. I like a Roast of pork with fresh cooked veggies....apple sauce and home made stuffing. I can be persuaded to eat sausage and mash...but only now and then. I like a pork chop grilled........with apple sauce on top, then topped with a sprinkling of mature cheddar cheese....mashed spuds, cabbage and carrots......I like a bowl of carrots mashed with butter and pepper.......I can eat then as a meal....i can eat sprouts like this too with just a sprinling of lardons on top. I make a very tasty vegetable pie too....no crust, but topped with crunchy crisp slices of potato. I make Risotto(various types) for the children too(I figure it is better than burger and chips)they eat it up and tell me it is better than what their ma makes....OK. I know this falls into the category of nasty foreign muck, but I think of it as a savoury rice pudding...you see, my goal posts are movable.:) |

The original from Bologna is always served with Tagliatelle NEVER Spaghetti which are from the South of Italy and are delicious served with many other sauces... Have you never noticed that the sauce doesn't coat Spaghetti? Therefore it is not a good combination! Don't know how you can dislike Tuna -either tinned or fresh -wonderful fish. Here in Italy they call it "La bistecca del mare" ie The Steak of the sea...as it is so meaty. Spaghetti with tuna is a great quick meal... |
Re: Aldi tomorrow 8.12.11
Didn't see any in either the Accrington store or the one in Manchester, but they may have sold out quickly as there were only 3000 bottles for sale.

Like the sound of the vegetable pie -interesting. Italian food is NOT foreign muck Margaret - it's the best diet in the world -healthy and nutritious. Not if you make it Jamie Oliver's way though -has it all swilling in olive oil! It's also very economical food to make -good for families who have to budget. The quantity of red meat eaten is much lower than in many other parts of the world hence less heart problems etc in the population. |

Italian food might not be foreign muck to you......and it might be healthy....I just don't like it. I don't eat pasta if I can help it.......I don't much like it(reminds me of wet wallpaper) I don't eat olives.......mushrooms have to be fried to a crisp for me to eat them(again it is a texture thing). I like tomatoes raw and on a good salad.......I like tomato soup too. I don't folow recipe books, and to me, Jamie Oliver is over hyped.

We lived on spuds and veg when we were hard up.......vegetable broth and dumplings....baked bean casserole with a couple of strips of crispy bacon on the top for garnish.......chips on bread.
I still make my own soups from fresh ingredients, casseroles and stews. We don't have much in the way of take aways.....a very occasional chippy tea(maybe once or twice in a year). |

With many 40-year-old whiskys available from upwards of £100, but some costing in the region of £300, doubts have been cast on whether the bottles Aldi is offering are worth the price it says. He added that he would not be surprised to see the whisky appearing for sale on eBay with customers taking advantage of the discount price of £49.99. Sells on eBay are not allowed to sell alcohol for 'consumption' but can get around this clause by selling it as a collectable. The limited edition, Speyside Single Malt Whisky comes from an unnamed Scottish distillery. Aldi will also be selling 3,000 bottles of a 24-year-old single malt whisky in its stores for £29.99 from November 24. Ziti, 2 sizes of spaghetti, tagliatelle, bucatini, trenette, pizzocheri (all "long" pasta) Penette, mezze penne, fusilli, farfalle, sedani, tofarelle. (short pasta) Orecchiette, Lasagne and Trofie (fresh pasta) Ditaloni rigati and gramigna (pasta for soups/minestrone) Each one has a different use/recipe and it's amazingly versatile stuff - but you do need to know how to cook it properly otherwise you get the "wall-paper" effect which Margaret P describes.:D |

We still get broth posies.......but lots of folk by the chopped up stuff.
I like to do my own chopping. As for the pasta being like wallpaper if cooked incorrectly.........al dente. is how they describe it when cooked properly.....I don't even like it like that either. It is a good job I live in Lancashire and not Italy. I would probably fade away to a shadow of myself. My brother often does consultancy work in India and he visits that country twice or three times every year....I would definitely starve to death there. |
Re: Aldi tomorrow 8.12.11
You can use bacon ribs too...or you can do a vegetarian version which is just as good with dumplings(especially if you add just a little bit of sage and finely chopped fried onions to the dumpling dough).

Good in broth too Sue.
When I make pea and ham soup I usually get some ham corner....and if we are really on our uppers, I have been known to just use the ham bone. The things that used to be really cheap....bacon ribs, ham shanks, belly pork, pork ribs.....have somehow become trendy......and have rocketed in price. I remember buying Lamb shanks at 99pence each.......now they are something like £3 each. |
Re: Aldi tomorrow 8.12.11

This trend for lamb shanks (and the price) leaves me cold... give me a nice roast any day, sorry I know lamb's not your thing but it's my favourite roast. Love belly pork as well. Round here the farmers' markets do something called a lamb henry, don't know where that came from. It's a normal half shoulder of lamb cut in half. In my opinion too small for a decent roast and a waste of good meat if you casserole it. At my Richard's works canteen and some pubs they serve a whole one for one portion which I think is obscene. |
Re: Aldi tomorrow 8.12.11
Himself and Ma used to love a lamb shank......slow roasted and glazed with canberry.
I used to do them one each...though Ma used to make hers do for two sittings......with new potatoes and minted peas. If I talk about them to Ma she fair smacks her chops. |

The only time i ever drank Whisky (no E!) was one New Year's Eve (sorry that should read Hogmannay) in Edinburgh many moons ago. Wonderful evening -torchlit procession and Celtic fire festival, Fireworks and it was "Brass monkeys " weather - didn't get drunk but I really didn't feel the cold!
A bar-tender told me that after 3 Whiskies if you drink a glass of water you won't know the difference -still tastes like Whisky -I tried it and he was right!:D |
