Oaklea Pub

Another 'un bites the dust.

Now where will certain well known members of Accy Web go for their pre-match drinks?

I spoke to the owner on Tuesday.

The owner did the same thing 6 years ago. He has re-applied due to the fact that the existing application is about to expire. Also, HBC are shortly changing thier "Core Policy" on the planning application process. Thus, he wants to get his application in early.

Wrong, Tealeaf, not flats, they're executive apartments whatever they are. Sound just right for Accy. ;)

Re: Oaklea Pub

Is it the building across the road from the Post Office which used to be a Working men's club? If so, lovely old stone building -would make very nice flats. Shame another pub would be closing (though i don't remember it as a pub) -saw on the news yesterday about how country pubs are managing to survive by diversifying into shops.

Executive apartments are flats with an extra nought on the price to keep out the riff raff. ;)

Who'd want to live in a posh flat on the thoroughfare for the local footy club ? Every 2nd Saturday hoards of ageing Yobboes, Hooglians & away fans padding past your yard, widdling on your Perennials & nicking or abusing your garden gnomes. lunacy I tell you, lunacy.

You have a way with words Dave. I was just thinking that hooglians sounded like something out of Gulliver's Travels when along you come with thugling - another wonderful coining which sounds just right for Cashy and Co., especially when you describe them as genteel and aged - just like one of your whiskies!

I don't think they're from anywhere particular Sue, it's just something we grew up with. Folk mispronouncing things to make them less severe or a genuine slip, but they tend to stick in the mind & we still use them in our crowd. :)

Aye, I suppose the Cashmeister & Wynn are comparable to Whiskies in a way, a tad cheeky at first, then warming & mellow, companionable & somewhat moreish. (All in a Blokey, lets have a pint & go the game sort of way mind) ;)

You may not be panicking today, but the time for doing so will not be far off. Read the planning submission again and the stuff about the pub not being - nor likely to be - commercially viable. And why the need for detailed archchitect's plans if the proposal for change of use is only a possibility?

Still, if I move back to Accy I'll maybe buy one of them flats and you and Cashy can come round for a few jars before the game. That, of course, is if Stanley is still at the Crown. Maybe a move away from there would be the tipping point for the Oaklea to call last orders for the last time.

Well, let's just hope you remain the current manager. While silly rumours and nonsense can be ignored, what cannot be discounted is the detailed planning application lodged with HBC and which is viewable on their website. Personally, I think it's a tragedy when any pub closes and there are various reasons for that happening (which are for another thread).

Still, if the pub does get turned into flats then at least that is better than being turned into a fast food takeaway, a planning application I have just seen for another building further down Whalley Road. No more of these outlets should be allowed and if HBC has any sense it should start shutting down the existing ones on health grounds.

I am bemused by this. If it were a renewal, it would state 'extant' .. this doesn't. Also, PA's only last a period of 3 years for work to commence.

Could be that a similar application was submitted 6 years ago, but this looks like a completely new one to me, which would cost the owner quite a bit of money if his original one had expired.

Puzzled ...

Yawn yawn yawn. People moan when local amenities close down. But, ask yourself why.

Because most people would prefer to buy cheap drinks at the supermarket. The vast majority of pubs can't buy products for the same price as supermarkets sell them at.

R.E. the previous post............ Graham Jones doesn't care about the Oaklea or the job loses if it closes.

Margaret Pilkington 11-01-2012 19:42

Re: Oaklea Pub

It is a case of economics.........some people do not have the luxury of choice. Their financies are stretched, so obviously it makes sense to get your alcohol hit where it is cheapest.
The other option is to go out spend your money in the pubs, and not pay the rent?
Not rocket science.
When there is no money about, people cut back on treats like a night at the pub.

Places like Weatherspoons appear to be managing ok. Some pubs are not viable to run so they close down. Others open up. Its just the way of business.

Nevertheless, Planning Permission has been granted.

Neil 10-03-2012 14:20

So it is still possible that the pub could be turned into flats.
The owner must be thinking about it or he would not have spent the money for planning permission twice.

It is likely a tax deductable business expense and increases the value of the property IF he ever decides to sell.

Nowt of the sort, check out new planning permission regs,;) he already got it when he purchased the property, was much much cheaper to renew than let it expire, its a fall back position simple as.;)

Thought of that too, Margaret, lots of property/land owners do this. Applicant is a 'she' by the way, who appears to have set up a company called Woodland Homes Ltd., which was incorporated on 20/12/2012....maybe for this reason ? The title is interesting though.

I'm on the Planning committe and we passed this earlier on in the year. It was with some regret I have to say, it's never nice when a pub shuts down, especially one as good as the Oaklea, but times are a-changing.

The planning application was very impressive, however.

The building currently being pulled to pieces from the inside out ready for it to be turn into flats.

Kate & myself would like to say a huge thank you to all of you that have supported us over the past 6 years. Not least to all our staff, without them we wouldn't have lasted 6 minutes, let alone 6 years.

Fingers crossed that everybody finds new jobs quickly and a massive thanks to all quizzers for their phone calls and messages of support.

The quiz will transfer to Sydney Street WMC from the 29th January starting at the usual 9.00 pm. The format will be the same but there will be an entrance fee of £1.

End of an era, sadly, but hopefully the dawn of a new one........
