A Canadians view on Accrington
My girlfriend Kelly is a freelance writer and recently wrote a short piece on Accrington and the UK. She loved her time living in Acrington and I thought I would share her thoughts on why we should love where we are from.

I notice she didn't list her time working behind the counter in the Stanley merchandise shop as one of her enjoyable experiences! ;)

I think it is a case of familiarity breeding contempt.....the fact that we do not value our own surroundings.
It is a very good piece. |
Re: A Canadians view on Accrington
I could identify with everyting she said as it's what I miss.
Love the photo of the Crown - my old "local" - it's true you don't appreciate what you've got until it's gone. |

Margaret My thoughts exactly, Accy may not be perfect, but the item does reflect the many good things that we pocess that you can't but a price on |
Re: A Canadians view on Accrington
When Ma and I go to beautiful places, we talk to residents of these places and ask them if they truly value the beauty of the place they live in...most of them say that they do, some say they don't think about it.
It is easy to see the bad things about the town, but I think it takes someone with a different viewpoint to see the 'roses under the rust'. So reckon it is good to have a visitor show you the roses that you can't see in your own town. |
Re: A Canadians view on Accrington
Nice artical, well done. I notice you both run the website, good luck to you, and happy trails

People asking her why she was here, because the place was rubbish. We do moan about it, but we love it to. Mind you, we do the same thing, when talking about our nearest and dearest. It's tradition. :D |

Re: A Canadians view on Accrington
A great read and very true but the lass didn't live there permanent, she was on an extended vacation so she saw the best of everything and there's no one like the British to make a person, who wants to join in, feel welcome. She didn't have to put that damn pie on though!! After being in Canada for almost 40 years I love to come home and for the same reasons. See you in May.

Re: A Canadians view on Accrington
Well I used to work away all the time and the best sign for me was junction 31 on the M6 and the road home, I actually lived in Rossendale from 78 to 86 but theres no place like home

Re: A Canadians view on Accrington
Nice article. But I have to disagree about the affordability of train travel. We have the highest fares in Europe and they have just got higher.

The comparison was against trains in Canada though, not the rest of Europe :).

Re: A Canadians view on Accrington
Thank you everyone for your comments. Kelly was contacted by Radio Lancashire and had a brief interview on the breakfast show this morning. I have been teasing her because she mainly used to the opportunity to talk about pies, I think she was hungry.
You can listen here (skip to 1hr 55min) BBC iPlayer - Graham Liver: 19/01/2012 Also having just completed a cross Canada trip by land (Victoria, BC - St John's Newfoundland) over 3 months, I can tell you, the trains are not cheap nor convinient. Its more to do with the geography of the huge country. Our 38 hour train journey from Winnipeg to Toronto was the same distance from Accrington to Warsaw, you just cant hop around Canada that easily. :) |

Re: A Canadians view on Accrington
On the subject of trains,I've just heard on Spanish radio that a contract to build 15 new trains for Britain has been awarded to a Spanish company.
No confirmation yet but sounds about right.:confused: |
Re: A Canadians view on Accrington
Tourtiere is nice, Them French Canadians have more in common with us northerners than you may think. Take Poutine, where else could chips, cheese and gravy be a delicacy?

Over here "English Style Fish and Chips" can bankrupt you. You want cheap food, you eat Donuts.
