In the event of!
I was talking recently to a lady who had just lost her husband. She had left most things to him and was totally lost as to what to do about pensions, bank accounts, bills-everything. Sorting it all out was going to take her and her family ages!
We're a bit like that so I decided that 'In The Event Of ' me not being able to do these things(for whatever reason, not being morbid!) it would be a good idea if I did a bit of a list of everything involved-Company names(gas/electric etc), account numbers, contact phone numbers, payment details, pension rights, council tax info etc..etc. It's not like it's not all available if you know where to look(where-ever you keep it-filing cabinet, drawer, cardboard box)-it's just that it is such a big job going through it all to get the info you need. Imagine what a task for partner/children/ friends if they ever have to start from scratch. You have no idea how long I've spent so far and I haven't finished yet! I'm up to 4 pages and still digging info out. Simple thing-OK you have a will but does anyone know where it is? Is your copy under the bed, what's the solicitors name for the original? I'll bet even you don't remember!(I must look for ours!)If no one knows it's not much use. Has anyone else done this or thought about it? If you haven't surprise yourself- just start jotting a few things down and see how it grows! |
Re: In the event of!
When my Dad was very ill, he gave me a list of things we should do, if he didn't survive.
He was going to fight, but these were things we should do 'just in case'. It was very helpful, and we did most, not all, of the things he suggested. If I leave a list it'll be cryptic, and make no sense, even once the clues are unravelled. :D |

Re: In the event of!
In the event of: My critters are already taken care of ... or, more precisely, I have already found folks who will be more than happy to take care of them.
For the rest of it, I don't really care. I'll be dead. I've already signed away the mortal remains for medical experiments, or whatever. My liver will be sent to a museum. I've got better things to do with what little time I have left than to worry about the problems I will cause by making my death as unorganized as my life:cool: |

Re: In the event of!
Me and my Brother are going through this right now as our Mum died just before Christmas.
But she had everything sorted out : all the stuff we needed was in a box will, solicitors name insurance policies etc she left letters for me and my brother explaining what her bank details are where she wants her ashes placing what service she wanted etc everything was in the letters with all details who to contact doc, council, gas account, electric and water family and friends to contact with phone numbers and addresses The only thing she got wrong was the price of the funeral she based it on our dads funeral in 1980 which was £380 her funeral was the same cremation etc and came to £3280 there was enough in the bank to cover this but make sure if you have insurance that there will be enough to cover costs as they are going up fast |
Re: In the event of!
You,re dead right Gordon, it can be a nightmare, thanks for the reminder.

Re: In the event of!
My mums already paid for her funeral, it made her content to know it was all sorted amnd we wouldn't be messing about. Again 90% of her stuff is in a box together so when th e unfortuante time comes it should not be too hard.
