Wo closed the "Sorry People" Thread, and why?

I was very surprised to see this thread closed. But slightly annoyed as to: (a) why it had been done and (b) just who decided to close it.

Any answers?

There are a lot of strange goings on just lately, Innocent members slated, the guilty encouraged. .....e mail addresses given out to anyone that asks..

I have all but given up asking why.

Re: Wo closed the "Sorry People" Thread, and why?

Its not what you say its who you know. I read and saw people get slated but they end up being told off not the one doing it. I seen moderator edit one not bad thing and leave a worse. I do really believe a lot of you are decent nice people but its coming over not that way with things like this like once before closed thread I wanted to say somehting but cant. My English isnt good enough for some either so thats the end now for me. Fight each other and be so narrow allows nothing. I expect good riddance said after I'm gone but it dont bother me. It was nice knowing some.

What's the matter Ifty? I only asked who? and why?

If you didn't like the thread then say so (as best as you are able to), I'm sure we will try to understand. I know your English isn't perfect, but then so is that of many people on this site.

Come on, give it a try. I'll listen!

Re: Wo closed the "Sorry People" Thread, and why?

Following my original post on the "Sorry people" thread, someone anonymously added to my karma. These are the details :

"19-10-2004 11:30 what makes you so perfect? "

What puzzles me about this is not that the comment is vaguely negative, it would not do for all of us to agree on everything, but that it appears to be neutral and has not affected the score. Usually, two options are offered; "good" with a green button, or "not so good" with a red button. The above comment is listed with a blue button. How is this done?

Incidentally, I wish that we could move to a system which attributes karma to the user, rather than the present annonymous system. It would be so much more helpful and informative if the person giving or subtracting karma could be identified. Then, at least, there could be some opportunity to learn what it was in the relevant post which either pleased or displeased.

Incidentally if the member responsible for the above karma message would care to identify themselves I would be more than happy to discuss the matter with them either in public or in private.

In the meantime, I will continue to sign all my karma messages and I would like to urge other members to do likewise.

A blue karma is when someone with less than 100 post's give's you karma ..:) I think because I got one a bit ago...

Thanks for that Simon, it's always useful to know.

I don't understand the karma thing at all. Can anyone explain it to me?

WillowTheWhisp 19-10-2004 14:26

Re: Wo closed the "Sorry People" Thread, and why?

I think that's a good idea A-bob to sign your name when you give Karma. I end up wondering who on earth I got some from, although I do have some signed ones. I wonder if the people who remove it would still remove it if they were not anonymous? Mind you, sometimes not being anonymous can land you in all sorts of hot water but what the heck if I've got an opinion I'll voice it.

You need to have 100 posts jelly baby in order to give or take Karma points. Yours are up there in the top right corner of your post. If you check in your profile you can see when and where you gained or lost them. You automatically start with 10. When you have enough posts you can add to other people's karma by clicking on the karma box in their post.

Well Princess, that's a great improvement. Your spelling isn't perfect we agree, but, at least we can understand what you are writing. Plenty of intelligent people have trouble with spelling. Please try to avoid the 'newteenspeak' it really is hard work for us 'oldies' to decipher.;)

This is happening rather a lot lately and it's all being done anonymously with no reason given. Myself and Bazf where debating the late Brian Clough with Kipax, this was closed before the debate was over, moderators this is very annoying, if you could give a reason it would be appreciated.

Re: Wo closed the "Sorry People" Thread, and why?

The reason was apparently given to Princesshales in PM (being that the rest of us didn't like text talk or words to that effect but we were happily posting in the thread weren't we and I enjoyed that very interesting quote from Jack Winter.)

Re: Wo closed the "Sorry People" Thread, and why?

I'm sorry to have entered this debate so late on. Having read peoples thoughts and musings on this thread and certain others where the mercury rises, what I would like to see is a system implemented whereby karma cannot be given or subtracted, without the benefactor making themselves known to the recipient; also a reason for the karma transaction should be included. This system would allow people to know the reasons why karma has been issued or detracted, and would preclude the forum degenerating into a squabble and negate a verbal 'night of the long knives'. All I'm asking is for people to stand up and be accountable for their karma convictions, instead of this perceived sniping, in certain instances.

I would also like to see the ability to 'ghost' and be online incognito removed. Do people have something to hide? It is unfair if moderators are online and silent running, in invisible mode, and pulling the plug on posts and sometimes even whole threads, then sitting back leaving the other mods' to cop the flack.

A little bit of honesty and integrity would pay dividends in the form of trust and respect.

What do other Accywebbers feel? Let's have an open and healthy debate, where everyone's opinion is respected, even if it is the polar opposite of your own.

Ok folks... no more Mr Angry impressions from me tonight. http://www.luxweb.co.uk/~accringt/fo...lies/smile.gif

PS. Has anyone found a Dummy, Rattle & Teddy Bear lying round? I seem to have mislaid them. http://www.luxweb.co.uk/~accringt/fo...es/redface.gif http://www.luxweb.co.uk/~accringt/fo...es/biggrin.gif

Re: Wo closed the "Sorry People" Thread, and why?

I found a teddy bear at the bottom of the stairs this morning.

On the subject of Karma, mine has behaved oddly just recently. The other day I lost one, went down to 33, then received one so went back up to 34. Now when I look in my profile all record of the one I lost has disappeared and yet my total remains at 34.

How can that be I wonder?

BTW I don't get angry - I just get curious.

Well said Sparky, I would like to feel that if I had a complaint, it would be taken seriously and action taken if nessesary!I don't mind being oversee'd by a moderator but it seems that the first to make a complaint is the winner every time!!! I recently had critisism of a dissagreement with Ki*** , If the moderators had examined the thread, They would have seen who was the aggressor, but they sided with him AND GAVE OUT MY E-MAIL ADDRESS so that he could continue his verbal crap!! WHAT IS HAPPENING ON THIS SITE??

Sorry Roy. I love the Accy web, but until you make every member EVEN, Members will not be happy! PLEASE be impartial to family/friends and listen to your faithful members:D

If that is the case, then it is totally out of order.

My assumption in this case is that Mr Angry could well have been a silent moderator, without actually anouncing it to the hoi-polloi. Maybe this could have given him the ability to find out your e-mail address.... just a thought, a theory, perhaps.

The resultant ambush of your e-mail inbox doesn't surprise me in the slightest though. :(

Returning to the initial posting. Tealeaf also asked...and nobody has yet answered.

Have we a moderator or not? Could He/she please answer my question?

Or do I see dark forces at work?

I'm not sure that I object to the 'ghosting' as such because there may well be instances when it's a good idea to have a lurking moderator who can pull the plug in necessary instances such as a certain member we had not too long ago who refused to stay banned and reappeared in different guises with the sole intent of offending people (either individually or en masse) but I do agree that when a thread has been closed it would be nice to know why and by whom. Likewise the deletion of individual posts which then makes subsequent replies look stupid.

I'm all for open and healthy debate and would hope that mature adults could agree to disagree with each other without having to resort to petty insults and unfounded accusations never mind the karma snitching.

I may not agree with some people's opinion on some points but I would still defend their right to have that opinion.

I agree that more openness and honesty would lead to greater trust and respect. I've only ever had one minor "humph" and that was when a post of mine was deleted for saying more than a basic "hello" to a new member in an intro thread yet other threads in that same forum contain conversations about different subjects relating to the initial posting by the "newbie". Can there really be any valid reason to delete a post apart from offensive content? (I've even seen posts with offensive content which have remained in situ, the reason being given that someone has replied to them! Perhaps what we really need is a bit of consistency.)

OK, Sparky that's my input into the debate.

JohnW 20-10-2004 10:45

Re: Wo closed the "Sorry People" Thread, and why?

I agree with all that has been said above. Why the post, to which I replied, from 'Princess' was deleted I cannot possibly imagine. As Willow says it makes my post look positively stupid. There was absolutely nothing in it that anyone could take offence to. All it did was lay out the reasons given to her why her earlier post had been deleted and perhaps that is the crux of the matter. Maybe, whoever deleted the post does not want the reason for the deletion to be known. Why? I have no earthly idea. Strange indeed. Maybe one of Hyndburn's councilors is ghosting as a moderator, that could explain the inexplicable!

I was under the impression that deleted posts and banning members was first discussed in the moderators section and a joint decision made. I know that sometimes if messages have to be sent to members that a moderator is nominated or offers to do the dirty deed and that it is not necessarily that moderators fault:)

This is the system, or how it should be run. Unfortunately this is something of a Utopian dream. When 'Fat Pie' in one of his latest guises came on Accyweb recently, one of the moderators let their ego get the better of them, and banned Fat Pie without even discussing it in the moderators forum.
