Down the Turkish Drain

Yesterday we were treated to the revelation by the Chancellor of the Exchequer that our beloved country had run out of money. Indeed so strapped for cash are we that there will be no scope for Tax cuts to stimulate economic growth in the coming budget.

Times are hard and it is no surprise that belt tightening is the order of the day, no matter how painful it might be.

Which makes this little gem of a story all the harder to bear.....

First it was begging India to take aid money it didn't want to save civil service and parliamentary blushes and now this.

How much more of our hard earned is being chucked down the gurgler while we are having to make do and mend?

Explain to me again, Graham Jones, just why it is that you think continued membership of the EU is in Britians best interests.

I thought this was going to be about the 80 million pounds that Britain is giving to Turkey to repair the sewers there.
Turkey doesn't need money from the UK......they have a big manufacturing base and should be required to maintain their own sewerage system without any help from the UK

Oh, and as for an answer to the question posed, for the attention of our MP......I hope you are sitting down......in a comfy chair....you will have a long wait!

I am already resigned to it being considered a rhetorical question, Margaret.:(

Re: Down the Turkish Drain

that's the sad part of it......we resign ourselves to the disappointment.
Perhaps that is part of the problem. Clearly, our MP has got it into his head that his constituents(or at least 95% of them) couldn't give a toss about what is going on with the EU......he assumes we are people of narrow vision, and narrower experience.

You don't climb the greasy pole if you support your voters instead of obeying Adenoid Ed, junior whip today, the world tomorrow:rolleyes:

'Millions of pounds of British aid is being used to upgrade Turkey’s sewage system, MPs have been told.'

Doesn't it make you feel proud to be part of the European Union?

Even though we've never been asked if want to be a member.

Whilst we have Graham Jones as our M.P., we never will get the chance to have our say.

Let's hear it for the European Union!

May all the turds now flow easily under the streets of Istanbul.

Thanks to our hefty financial contributions.

Not forgetting three cheers for Graham Jones M.P.

Who stated that a referendum would settle E.U. membership 'democratically', though voted that we shouldn't have that democratic right.

Mainly because politicans know best, and we're all a bit too thick to understand it properly.

Hip, hip...

No?

Fair enough.

You may think giving aid to Turkey is crazy; but what about this for nonsense:

Express.co.uk - Home of the Daily and Sunday Express | UK News :: We give £27m aid to Argentina

This is just another reason we should pull out of the EU, when your paying money into a central fund and have no control over where its being spent the game really is up, wonder if our illustrious MP thinks this acceptable for the EU to do this:mad:

it wouldnt sting so much if it was £27 million worth of rockets we were fireing at them but even so this country continues to give money to others while its own citizens either make do or go without and that money could be spent a lot better elsewhere.

thats over £100 million given out in 2 days and thats just what we get to hear about

and teh government has the nerve to put our fuel up,gas, electric, food, ...well everything really to pay for their generosity to other countries

Here's a bit more about the bits you don't generally get to hear about, unless you listen very carefully to the Chancellors budget statement to the House.

The total overseas aid budget looks like this....

2011-2012 £8,550m

2012-2013 £8,813m

2013-2014 £11,554m

2014-2015 £12,162m

A grand total of £41,079,000,000.oo

of your hard earned cash to be given away over four years.

No wonder wee Georgie Osbourne can't find enough cash to stimulate the economy with.

Acrylic-bob 01-03-2012 17:00

Re: Down the Turkish Drain

But there are even more interesting bits the further you dig.

You know that place that used to be called Rhodesia? You know, the place where they want to dig up the body of Cecil Rhodes and send it back to the UK and whose president doesn't have anything nice at all to say about the UK? Guess how much we are going to be contributing to keeping him in the style to which he has become accustomed.....

You'll laugh...

Three hundred and fifty three Million Pounds

£353,000,000.00

just think what you could do here for destitute families or the elderly with that amount of cash.

And the Donkeys who infest Scaitcliffe Towers are making a song and dance about saving a couple of million. So selfish when there are dictators all over the world who are crying out for our cash.

Re: Down the Turkish Drain

To save anyone searching for it ill quote our local mp's response and also add that this is the man that said twice on here he would support a referendum

Quote:

Thanks for your email about a proposed referendum on Britain’s membership of the European Union.

Britain currently faces tough economic challenges, with high inflation, rising unemployment and stagnant growth.

Indeed, in the last nine months the UK economy has not grown at all. Over the last year only Japan has grown more slowly in the G7 and only Greece, Portugal, Denmark and Hungary have grown more slowly in the EU. One in five young people are out of work and there are now more women unemployed than any time since 1988.

It is in that context that we make judgements about Britain’s membership of the European Union. Labour is not opposed to having referenda on European questions when a Government seeks to make a major change to Britain’s relationship with the European Union. For example, it was a Labour Government in 1975 that held instituted a referendum on Britain’s membership of the European Union and Labour believes that if any future government wanted to try and take Britain into the euro, they would need to win the British people’s backing in a referendum.

But it is Labour’s assessment, shared by the leaders of all the main parties in the UK, that it is in Britain’s interest to remain members of the European Union.

Membership of the European Union is vital to Britain’s growth and prosperity:

· 3.5 million UK jobs are linked directly or indirectly to UK trade with the rest of the European Union according to official analysis

· European markets account for half of the UK’s overall exports of goods and services

· Eight out of the UK’s ten main export markets are in the European Union

We did not seek a mandate for this referendum at the last election and we do not wish to leave the European Union now.

We do not believe the case for this referendum has been made and believe it would create uncertainty that could put at risk investment in the UK.

Labour’s position is that Britain should be focussed on jobs and growth, not cutting ourselves off from major export markets that British jobs depend on. It is campaigning for that jobs and growth, and against the policies of the Tory-led Government that have led to flatlining growth and increasing unemployment in Britain, that will remain Labour’s priority in the months ahead.

Best wishes

Graham
