Telephone Preference Service
After trying to have a couple of quiet days at home i've now registered for the above service
Today I've received 3 calls regarding car insurance, 2 for home insurance 1 regarding making a will, 1 to protect my sky TV equipment, 2 for PPI refunds and 2 calls that were legitimate Being out at work I wonder if today was just a one off or is it like this everyday Has anybody else used the service and does it work? |

I screen my calls now, on the answerphone, and only pick-up if it isn't an unsolicited call. Safer. As I've ocasionally been called by someone newly diagnosed with Parkinson's, who can suffer with hesitation in speech, but I thought was the time delay from India, to go forth and multiply! :D |
Re: Telephone Preference Service
The calls from the asian sub continent still get through....as do a few others.
I have been telling the callers that their call is illegal....and having ascertained first, the name of the company calling, I tell them they are going to be reported to the Commisioner for information and their firm will get a five thousand pound fine.....they ring off pretty damn sharpish. |
Re: Telephone Preference Service
Depending what mood I'm in I sometimes string along the calls from India for ages, agreeing with everything they are telling me and saying yes/ok at various times - I take it they're paying for the call so I'll ty and inconvienience them as much as possible

Re: Telephone Preference Service
I'd just like to point out that I did actually 'sign' up for the TPS.
I'm not still getting calls because I sang my request. Asking to be freakin' well leave me in peace. :D |

I have had some fun with calls too.......I have asked them if they are a friend of the deceased and did they know them well. that usually sends them into a bit of a tailspin.:D |
Re: Telephone Preference Service
We signed up when last thread was going, get very few n far between now, though not sure if its the service,or the fact we used to answer, leave phone in other room.:D

Re: Telephone Preference Service
I am signed up for the service but still get loads of sales calls and this morning at 4.11 am received a call from 02034554012. When I picked the phone up it was just a dialling tone and this morning have done a bit of research and it seems a lot of people get these calls during the night which to me is really not on.
Bearing in mind I have elderly parents and my dad is really not well at the moment you can imagine my thoughts when the phone goes off in the middle of the night. People tell me to switch the phone off but for obvious reaons I can't. |
Re: Telephone Preference Service
I signed up years ago but still get these calls I've even registered to try and stop foreign calls too but I still get um, had two from the same lot yesterday calling themselves the British Credit agency or something like that, telling me they could help me solve my debt problems, when I told the chap that his company weren't very good on research he couldn't understand me, I just said well if you'd troubled to do any instead of just dialling a random number you could have save yourself time and money seeing I have never had any debt, now sod off and don't bother me again, or words to that effect:rolleyes:

Re: Telephone Preference Service
the companies get around it now by doing surveys .When rang me i tod them they shouldnt be ringing me but they just said nope they were ok to becaus ethey were doing a service. Also BT mazingly enough dont have the ability to block telesales coming in from other countries so comapnaies are moving abroad so they can annoy everyone again:(

Re: Telephone Preference Service
Another good tactic is to ask them to hold because the person they need to speak to is in another room, then just leave em dangling.

Re: Telephone Preference Service
I just thought I'd share this with you all....long winded maybe...but hopefully it's of some use to you all !!!!
I came across this on the Money saving expert website ( Martin Lewis....you may have seen him on telly or advertised....Money Saving Expert: Credit Cards, Shopping, Bank Charges, Cheap Flights and more )when I received the regular weekly e-mail (incidentally it's a very good website with a wealth of very useful information on all sorts of matters) Quote: ( from one of their regular posters to the forum there) "I finally found out where these callers from overseas are getting phone numbers and your name from. It's from Search for People, Businesses and Places - 192.com. If you go to that site and search for yourself, you will be surprised just how much info comes up on you such as all your details, how much and when you bought your house, who lives in the house everything." I've just been on the website and was horrified with the details stored on there....not just mine, but a hell of a lot of family members, some of whom are elderly and vulnerable !!! They even had my ex-partner as registered to my address (and there was me wondering how the hell the callers had got my number when they were calling asking for her, as she'd moved out before I got my landline put in !!!) As far as I can see, there's even details of some dead relatives of mine (immediate family & dead some six years), at their old address. Not a problem to any occupants of the address now...but imagine the distress this causes any surviving relative / spouse still living at an address that these clowns still hold from outdated info they hold!!! They (192.com) seem to get details from the electoral register. If you've ever examined the voter registration forms you get every year, there's an "edited register" section as in " if you do not want to appear on the edited register, please tick" Fortunately, If you visit 192.com there is a form you can download (without registering) & print that will get your details removed from their listings !!!:D The one thing I'd love to know ( & I will be investigating ) is, I have always ensured that the "edited register" was ticked since I moved into my address (13 years ago). I also made a point of making sure that the ex's name was removed from my address when she made her exit!! ( as it potentially affects credit ratings) In the last few ( 5 years ) I've always used the internet option when completing the Council's " voter registration form " yet I've still had council rep's knocking on the door asking me to sign the same said form. When I've (quite angrily) pointed out that I've already completed (quite carefully) the form online, the council rep has shrugged their shoulders, quite apologetically and simply stated they still need my signature!!!:( Somebody.... somewhere is either not doing their job,or is deliberately flouting the rules.....or is totally incompetent !!! Given that I have to work with data protection daily and knowing what the constraints and implications of said act, I'm a bit miffed to say the least (without swearing!!), that all these details have found their way onto a website where allsorts have access to them !!! T.P.S. is all well and good....but if this is an example of how these annoying callers can get around it.....:mad::mad::mad::mad: If I find evidence of negligence or somebody flouting the rules....heads will roll!!!:behead: |
Re: Telephone Preference Service
Thanks for that carpon very interesting post and will be checking the site out, as I'm getting tired of Indians called Geoffrey Dave and Gemma ringing me most days:rolleyes:

Re: Telephone Preference Service
Just had a look at the website and was quite annoyed that my Fathers name was still their, he died in 2003
|
Re: Telephone Preference Service
I'm surprised that the existence of 192.com is news to many people. It's been around for about fifteen years and if you Google a person's name it's usually one of the first sites that comes up in the search results.
The edited register and the facility to opt out has only been around since 2002. Before that the full register could be bought for commercial purposes. Therefore 192.com could have had access to all data before that date and may be showing data that are now out of date. This is one of the consequences of the information age we now live in, which like anything else has its upside and its downside. |
Re: Telephone Preference Service
Thanks for that info....it has enabled me to register for the Mail Preference Service too.
I hate junk mail with a passion........I put it back in the post box with my address scribbled out. |
Re: Telephone Preference Service
I keep getting phone calls and on the phone display is "international call" if we answer the phone goes dead.

Re: Telephone Preference Service
I just had a wonderful and unexpected call to tell me I'd won a weeks holiday for four completely free - I can take it any time in the next year and at the hotel of my choice!
All I have to do is go along on Saturday morning to a hotel in Cremona and buy a set of very expensive cast iron pans and sign up for a time share... I've also been offered a free trial of a water purifier, a range of organic pet food for my cats and some olive oil from Liguria. It's so nice of them to call - no-one ever rings me up and I do like a chat.... |
Re: Telephone Preference Service
I sometimes do have a chat with these international callers - it must really disrupt their call times and the script that they are supposed to stick to :D:D:D

Panorama on BBC1 at 8.30pm on Monday 2 July might be of interest. It's about unsolicited marketing calls and how firms get round the regulations designed to protect consumers.

Here's a clean website were many cold call phone numbers can be traced, it might come in handy...no need to register or give your own number
Who called me? Free reverse phone directory. |
Re: Telephone Preference Service
Watched the program, but didn't really tell us anything we didn't already know, although the regulator is looking into thousands of complaints nobody has yet been prosecuted, and no doubt if some firms are prosecuted it will be a slap on the wrists, just a drop in the ocean to these people and well worth carrying on

Re: Telephone Preference Service
I tend to leave my phone off the hook for a few hours. You generally get a VERY loud alarm played down the receiver after 15 minutes or so but it's hardly surprising considering the cost to them of the call.
I hope they enjoyed being unable to hang up when I had a weekend away with family last month... |
Re: Telephone Preference Service
I've been inundated with phone calls from Jamaica, asking me I was married must have had six in about half an hour around 5-15pm, they didn't ring again after the last one, mind you I did give um both barrels verbally, I thing is I couldn't ignore the phone I was actually waiting for a call from my other half
