Little Windows In Envelopes

I've been having a shredding & white sack day today, old bills and statements being removed ready for more of the same to replace them this year.
One thought came to me, the Council don't want envelopes with windows in them amongst the re-cycling.
May I humbly suggest then, that the Council set an example by no longer using these envelopes themselves?

The majority of envelopes I can't re-cycle come from that rich source of bumph.

Re: Little Windows In Envelopes

I just waste my time and pull out the plastic part, or throw it in anyway if they don't want it they can take it out! Simples :)

Re: Little Windows In Envelopes

I just put them in the white sack Less to be honest. Like you say they should set an example! ;)

Re: Little Windows In Envelopes

I have just read the council's recycling advice here -
http://www.hyndburnbc.gov.uk/downloa..._Recycling.pdf

It says 'plastic windows' of envelopes aren't acceptable for recycling.

I notice that most window envelopes have a window that seems more like tracing paper than plastic - so I presume that those are recyclable.

I am fast becoming quite an expert on envelope windows and can tell you that without a shadow of a doubt, the figure for PLASTIC windows from HBC isn't a modest figure such as, 95%, it is a 100% usage level.
:)

Re: Little Windows In Envelopes

You could always move over here, Less... Lancaster City Council say it's OK to put window envelopes in the recycling. Or you could pack yours up and send them to me... ;)

Margaret, I wouldn't be too sure - plastic can masquerade as all sorts of things these days and even those that look like tracing paper could have some plastic content. The only way to be sure would be to contact the envelope manufacturers and I think HBC should be a bit more specific too.

Thanks for the offer, however I wouldn't want to upset your better half.
I'm halfway through the pile, my shredder has overheated and needs a rest.
The amusing thing about all the envelopes with windows, is that on the back of them these caring companies either claim these envelopes are re-cyclable, or begging me to re-cycle for the sake of the planet.
Are they all wrong? Is it only HBC that is correct by telling us not to re-cycle these envelopes?

Re: Little Windows In Envelopes

I tear the plastic windows out and recycle the envelope(usually with a shopping list on the back):D

Less 28-03-2012 13:33

Oh the irony, just noticed which of my waste paper the shredder packed in on.
It was a leaflet from HBC asking me to recycle more in their cash back challenge!

:)

How can the Council tell if you shred everything?

Do you think for one moment that if they have pondered the thought of DNA testing dogs they would hesitate to use other CSI techniques to catch an errent plastic window recycler?

They put a little sensor in the envelope which sends information back to them on how you dispose of it.

A bit like the wheelie bins.

Re: Little Windows In Envelopes

How come I never thought of that?

Less 28-03-2012 16:04

Ever been out the back when it's wheelie bin day?
A three person team comes around, one, (male), moves the bins to the side to give the wagon room to get through & do it's job, the other two, (not male), searching through the bins to check if anyone needs to be refused a refuse collection because of wrong items in the bin, (a severe warning is then posted for being naughty).
Not being sexist however perhaps an all male team could check the bins as they are moving them to one side or even just go back to the system of one man moving the bins?
I bet he doesn't get paid as much of a wage as the two snoopers.

Those little windows were invented, because some clowns were putting the wrong adresses on the envelopes, even now with the sysyem simplified, they still managed to drop clangers, addessing the letters to the wrong people, what ever you do don't give them your email address.

I have never seen recycling monitors where I live.

Our bins are accessible to the general public as they walk past, so anyone could put anything in them without our knowledge.

Before the red dog bin was sited nearby, I used to get bags of poo in mine:o.

I sometimes find empty booze bottles and cans. People are too idle to carry their rubbish home - it's better than throwing it on the lawns and in the woods I suppose.

thing is the generic letters are designed to fit into window envelopes, would you want to hand write hundreds of letters a day, i know i wouldn't. Just put them in the white sack as they are I do, and I bet 90% of others do too.

To be honest wallop it only takes a few seconds to rip the windows out then put them in the white sack, at one time I just through them in the rubbish but I always put the windowless envelopes in with the rest of the recycling now

PS I'm after Brownie points from Mossy:D:D

if you have that much time on your hands, stick your address on here and we'll send you all our envelopes to tear the windows out.

It will do two things, keep your hands occupied and away from the keyboard & give the Post Office a boost with the extra stamps purchased to send them to you.

In my day Time is King Less, I've a lot of it mate, it takes two seconds to rip a window out of an envelope, think I can spare that a couple of time a week:rolleyes:

I think you're missing the main point, so for you I will repeat it slowly,

The Council don't want envelopes with windows to be recycled, they do want us to recycle as much as possible, so, why doesn't the Council which produces the biggest pile of envelopes that come into most houses lead by example and stop using envelopes with little windows?

I know it doesn't take long to tear the window out, but as small as they are, these little windows do add to what goes to landfill.

Perhaps I should have put this in anything goes? Except for the fact that everything doesn't go, we still have the windows.
:o

Re: Little Windows In Envelopes

Give the offending envelopes to dog owners.

To put their pooch's plop-plops in.

They can then safely be deposited in the council's dog waste bins.

Then they can deal with them.

Mild?

How long is it since you went binge drinking?

We've moved on to bitter in the last forty years.

Some of the really adventurous are rumoured to have been brave enough to experiment with summat called lager!
