Italian Earth Quake

There was an Earth Quake in Northern Italy last night in Sant'Agostino, with 4 fatalities, just wondering how far that's from Cremona where mobertol lives, she hasn't been on today yet, hope she's okay

Mobertol was logged on at 9.45am today, after the first 'big one'.
The aftershocks are continuing - most recent was 22mins ago.
Live Earthquakes Map

She is northwest of the epicentres and reasonably distant, though I have no doubt she felt the shocks and will be busy helping with the scared livestock on the farm.
My exhusband's family live in Ferrara which is in the midst of it.
I have tried to read the Ferrara local news but my italian is too rusty to understand much.

I'm fine Jay, thanks -didn't feel a thing as I was fast asleep!

It was felt quite strongly though by my eldest who'd come in late and was still awake -said his bed was shaking and the windows rattling -scared him a bit -he was very near the last one a while back in Parma.

We have felt the aftershocks this morning though just the windows rattling a bit and lights swinging...

Looks like there's been some serious damage to various churches, castles and old towers in the area around Modena and Ferrara -two lovely old places.

The death toll is now at 6 - 4 night -shift workers who were killed and two women had heart attacks because of the shock.

My husband was up milking last night as one of our milkers broke his arm last week and he's been in substituting him (they milk at half past two at night!) He didn't feel a thing as our new barn is built to anti-seismic standards but said alll the animals went berserk -they feel it more than us.

Hope none of your extended family suffered any damage or injuries Margaret.

Unfortunately I have had no contact with them since divorce in 1980, but I care about their welfare. I will never forget how they welcomed me into their family in 1978, (despite being a non catholic divorcee).

Glad you are alright Dianne. Margaret, hope your ex husbands family are unharmed too.
Just because you aren't in contact doesn't mean that you don't care....or wish them safe.

Unfortunately in that moment - NO!

Has been quite a while Jay;):D

Joking apart, it's been a bad weekend in Italy -first the terrible bombing in Brindisi which killed a 16 yr old girl and has seriously injured others and now the earthquake...there have been a number of them in the North since the beginning of the year -hope this is the last one.

Re: Italian Earth Quake

OMG -that was a big one somewhere near -feel really weird and shakey!!
Light fittings still swinging as I write...
The dining table I'm sitting at with the computer was going backwards and forwards and all the windows were shaking -I think it's one of the strongest ones I've ever felt.
Off to switch on the news and find out what's happened!

Re: Italian Earth Quake

From the news it looks like another one centered near Modena - they are saying it was about 6 on the Richter scale and buildings have been evacuated across the North of Italy in Bologna, Cremona, Milan and all the way to Bolzano and Genova-so they are saying it was felt over a very wide area. Don't know if there are any victims yet but it seems quite a lot of damage to buildings.

mobertol 29-05-2012 07:22

Re: Italian Earth Quake

They are showing on the news that across the North of Italy all schools have been evacuated and the people in all the major towns and cities have abandonned buildings and are out in the streets. It was a strong earthquake and not very deep in the earth's crust from what they are saying -I am still feeling shakey!

Luckily I'd already finished it Cashy otherwise it would have been all over my laptop!

Had already played the quiz too luckily -wouldn't manage to use the mouse fast at the moment:D

mobertol 29-05-2012 07:38

Re: Italian Earth Quake

They are now showing that it was felt all the way down to Florence where schools have been evacuated and along the coast of Versilia and in Venice too.

No news of deaths or injuries yet but it's likely as there has been a lot of damage and they have shown buildings collapsing.

Re: Italian Earth Quake

They are saying on the news that 75% of the village of San Felice, where the earthquake was 2 weeks ago, has been destroyed and they are conferming 9 dead and more missing.:(

Re: Italian Earth Quake

At the risk of being thought flippant, the site has this to say:

Remember that the last quake caused around 500 million Euros damage around 200 million Euros of which was due to cheese-related losses.

Does this mean that the price of Parmesan will go up??

Actually, they were selling off cheaply those cheeses slightly damaged in the earthquake, otherwise they would have had to dump them. Don't think prices will go up due to the earthquake, but don't forget there's a financial crisis that obviously will affect all exports from Italy

Thanks, I'll keep a lookout for earthquake-soiled Parmesan!

This is good news for those of us who like Mediterranean food - but I won't hold my breath that prices will drop very much in UK!

Olive oil price plunges to ten year low in further blow to Spain and Greece | This is Money

Coconut oil is better than olive oil, (allegedly)

Health Benefits of Coconut Oil

I recently switched to using it for all frying, but still use olive oil for salad dressing.

The economic effects of this earthquake will be quite devastating
OMG it's happening again!
We've just had another quite big one!

mobertol 29-05-2012 10:58

Re: Italian Earth Quake

Just put the TV on again -looks like a big aftershock -scary, lights stil swinging again -maybe they got the 27th May end of world prediction wrong and it's today!!

mobertol 29-05-2012 11:02

Re: Italian Earth Quake

Back to the economic effect -things are already bad here and this will be a big blow. There has been a massive amount of damage to both modern and old buildings also to schools and hospitals.
There is another one now too as I write it is crazy -maybe I should go outside!
Anyway the death toll is 10 confirmed and a number of people missing so it's sad for those families involved.
It' quite sacry to feel them a a distance so I can't imagine what it must be like o be near.
They're saying the new shocks were big ones around or over 5 on the richter scale.

mobertol 29-05-2012 11:14

Re: Italian Earth Quake

They are just confirming the last 2 shocks -first one 5.3 -second one 5.1 on the Richter scale -very unusal to have had such big aftershocks and so close together.
Have been felt across the North again.

Re: Italian Earth Quake

This morning they are saying that there were 16 victims in yesterday's earthquake, 350 injured and very extensive damage over a vast area. They estimate that about 14,000 people have had to leave their homes because of damage.

A family arrived on our farm yesterday evening from a village near Modena -they had damage to their home (cracks in the wall, fallen plaster and damage to the roof) so they'll be here until it's declared safe. They were afraid to go home in any case and will be staying with one of my neighbours for a few days at least.
We were talking about what had been written on this thread about the price of Parmigiano Reggiano (if they sell it as Parmesan -it's not the real thing!). The opinion here is that the price will actually go up -though no doubt a black market of the damaged cheeses will soon be set up!

Hope that your ex-husbands family has not been affected Margaret.

It seems that the price of balsamic vinegar will also rise as that commodity comes from Modena.
