Accrington Beach!

I knew this would get your attention! :theband:

But do you think it would be a good idea to create an artificial beach in the Accrington area and charge people to use it? :D

If so where would it be?

It would be a health hazard because chavs would pee on the sand.

Once saw an artificial beach on the Rive Gauche of the Seine in Paris -looked very effective.

In Accy -likely to turn to quicksand with all the rain but Abbey Street maybe? Nice bit of recreational space for Maundy Grange - added attraction: free ice-creams for all!:D

If you put it by the canal in Clayton Davemac can take seaside pictures as well as ducks and wicky things. No topless sunbathing though!

Just knock the whole town centre down and site it there. It's dying on its feet anyway, thanks to successive councils. If it was a beach, you'd probably get more people there than now.

years ago there was a rumour that there was going to be a leisure resort /theme park built up huncoat which resulted in jokes about the place been known as Huncoat Sands.

If it an artificial beach your after just dump the kids at jewsons or greengates with tehir bucket and spade and leave them in the sand bunker while you go shopping :D

Brisbane has(or had, until the floods - not sure if it has been rebuilt yet) a city centre, man made beach.....it is well used but then they do have the climate for it don't they.
A beach in Accrington? I don't think it would work. We don't have the weather for it

Sand is gritty stuff which isn't pleasant to be in contact with.
It's only association with pleasure derives from its being next to the sea.
Since we are unlikely to have waves lapping Accrington anytime soon, a better alternative is grass, flowers and benches.

We used to have just that - where the semi derelict Arndale now is.

Why not have a paddling pool and a boating lake as well?

Not at an age when I appreciated paddling pools! Never got further down Clayton than just past the Greyhound, where my great great uncle lived, used to go and visit him after school every week on the bus. A trip to Oakhill Park was a special treat.

Clayton is still a bit of a closed book to me today, as is Ossy, Woodnook, Fern Gore and most of that side of town. But don't forget I haven't lived in Accy since the sixties so haven't really had the opportunity to get acquainted.

Re: Accrington Beach!

There was a temporary city beach in Manchester Castlefield area a couple of years ago. It was very popular but Manchester Castlefield is a popular area for a day out.. Plenty of decent bars, restaurants, MOSI and decent shops within a 10 minute walk....

Accrington has none of this stuff. The town centre is dying on its arse, the market is less than half the size it once was. The Market Hall has been completely ruined in my opinion, and there's hardly an abundance of decent boozers and restaurants.

Accrington would have been better off with a few small green spaces in the town centre but to be honest. I don't think that anything would attract people to shop here now. When I ask people at work if they come to Accrington shopping, the answer is always...
"I used to come years ago for the market, but not anymore."

It would be a waste of money to make a beach here.

Do some towns actually have artificial beaches? are they going to make an artificial beach too?

What is a beach without sunsets over sea horizons.

Doesn't have to be the sea ... Lakes are good too.;) I remember sailing accross Lake Athabasca one summer hauling diesel fuel to Uranium City. Just like the sea, except you could drink the water. Also drove over the same route on the ice road in a SIN truck ... no, we weren't hauling whores; that's Saskatchewan Indian Nations;) ... Ok, so my buddy Roland Desjarlais, who was Chief of the Muskowekwan Ojibway First Nation at the time, did most of the driving, but I did do the simple bits:D So, if it's a cold winter over there, what about an ice road from Clayton to Ossy? It would be a winter complement to the beach.:)

As the memory is the second thing to go, this may not be accurate.;) But I seem to remember an abandonned wading pool in the Woodlands. I believe I used to sail a toy boad in it. One of those which worked on candle power ... don't know exactly how to describe it; but someone else's memory may be working better than mine.

"But do you think it would be a good idea to create an artificial beach in the Accrington area and charge people to use it? If so where would it be?"

When I read this, I thought you must have seen the "daft" postcard you can buy from the Tourist Information which shows a postcard of our Town Hall, with the Broadway side airbrushed out, with a beach and a donkey showing on it, stating "Wish you were here". I have NOT made this up, I bought a few of these postcards and sent them out to friends for a laugh. Its a funny old world!

Italian, actually. Here is part of something Garinda posted last year, which I hope he doesn't mind me copying:-

Mr Eddie Quiligotti MBE planned to call the centre Zeri after his home village in Tuscany.

The former tile company boss announced the plan to an incredulous population amid a blaze of publicity in 1989.

It was to have featured winter and summer worlds, a huge 15,000-seater stadium and a 300-room hotel spread over the 300-acre site of the former power station.

It would have been Europe’s largest theme park and holiday centre, and it was projected to create 5,000 jobs and attract 4,000 visitors a day.

The idea was embraced by planners as a way of guaranteeing Hyndburn’s fame and fortune for years to come.

The winter wonderland was to have contained an ice palace, ski-ing on six dry slopes, a toboggan run and a lake while a sea world would have provided aquaria, water rides and boat trips.

Also earmarked for Zeri were restaurants, shops, cinemas, villas, a conference centre, gardens and an adventureland with light shows and white knuckle rides.

And the diverse attractions would have been linked by a one-and-a-half-mile-long cable car track similar to the one used in ski resorts.

The idea was taken extremely seriously for a time, with then planning officer John Tilley stating: "This is the biggest thing that will ever happen around here. People will be attracted to the area for holidays and some may never set foot outside the complex."

But the plan never got off the drawing board and four years later it was announced that the bubble had finally burst.

Mr Quiligotti had pledged £1M of his own cash to the scheme but as a recession began to bite he failed to attract the financial backing for the remaining £299M

He said sadly: "It is all over. I have been banging my head against a brick wall."

But critics said they had known what would happen right from the start.

Thanks for posting - it was going to be sited in the area near Hambledon Scouts just after you pass Huncoat on the way to Burnley to the right are some old quarries on some hills with woodland below it - that was the site. Glad he didn't get his way.

Why did he chose Accrington well never know but it was an oddball idea. As he only offered 1 million to the budget of 299 Million probably had a lot to do with it! ;)

Going right up to the hills as he wanted one of those ski cable car rides, so it would have covered that whole area going up to the hills.

What's at the Power Station now? Houses?

I reckon if it was done properly it would work and make somebody rich lol - perhaps could be partially indoors with swimming pool and ice rink and 20,000 seater arena and - oh hell where are that guy's plans?
