Blind man Tasered by police: I was terrified – video

http://b.scorecardresearch.com/p?c1=1&c2=6035250&c5=02

Colin Farmer, a blind 61-year-old, tells how he was was shot in the back with a 50,000-volt stun gun by police in Chorley, Lancashire, when they mistook his white cane for a samurai sword. The matter is being investigated by the Independent Police Complaints Commission. Farmer has said he intends to take legal action

who's the blind one?

You could'nt make it up.......How can you mistake a 61yr old blind man with a walking stick for a 27-year-old man carrying a samurai sword?

Did they tazer the guy they were looking for O no they seen him with the sword and arrested him on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly

Re: Should of gone to specsavers

I've researched this a bit now-it is the IPCC.

They say they didn't taser the guy with the sword because he responded to them promptly (probably because he could see them as opposed to the first guy who couldn't, you think?)

You're right-I think there must have been more than one visually challenged person involved in this incident-I'm currently surrounded by Samuru swords and I can tell you not one of them would pass for a blind person's stick.
So is the policeman claiming self-defence? Because this guy had a 'weapon'?
They're not just used as a guide-they're recognised as a symbol, the user is blind (or deaf and blind).
Rather large schoolboy error-wonder if he still had an 'L' plate on his home office helmet...:rolleyes:

This is why I bracketed 'Or deaf and blind'. The sticks are marked differently but not something that would be clear unless you were fairly close to one-what's the firing distance of a taser gun?

White stick or samurai sword? What the Tasering of a blind man highlights | Peter Beresford | Comment is free | guardian.co.uk

The guardian are having a prattle. I don't understand the relevance really, the police are claiming to not KNOW this man was anything but fully able-bodied....

From my experinces there are a lot of meat head coppers! But there are some who are polite - mixed experiences generally they are meat heads!;):D

How do you confuse a white stick for a samurai sword?

It's worse if your black - as there are many in London who have been killed by coppers and their families get no explanation.

Could have been worse ... in Detroit he probably would have been shot ... or, at Vancouver International, tasered to death:

Taser video shows RCMP shocked immigrant within 25 seconds of their arrival - British Columbia - CBC News

And you guys thought the Mounties were a tourist attraction:rolleyes:

One good thing I can see about tasers is that they are usually not lethal ... unless of course there are three or four horsemen going nuts with them. And they do provide an option between beating the bark off a guy and filling him full of holes. Not surprisingly, there is a great deal of debate in my country surrounding the use of tasers, and also the question of police investigating police.

Re: Should of gone to specsavers

i bet the officer was ' just doing his duty' or the victim was tazered as a result of a 'misunderstanding'(move along now nothing to prosicute here)

The case has been refered to the IPCC a totally government run and funded organization heaed by a former prison governer(move along now nothing to prosicute here)

Chief Superintendent stuart williams said “On Friday evening we received a number of reports that a man was walking through Chorley armed with a samurai sword. A description of the offender was circulated to officers and patrols were sent to look for the man.

“One of the officers who arrived in Chorley believed he had located the offender. Despite asking the man to stop, he failed to do so and the officer discharged his taser.

“It then became apparent that this man was not the person we were looking for and officers attended to him straight away. He was taken Chorley Hospital by police officers who stayed with him whilst he was checked over by medics. They then took him to meet his friends in Chorley at his request.

“Lancashire Constabulary deeply regrets what has happened. We have clearly put this man through a traumatic experience and we are extremely sorry for that. Officers have remained in contact with him and his family over the past few days to enquire about his recovery and we will continue to keep in touch with him and keep him informed of our inquiry.

“We have launched an urgent investigation to understand what lessons can be learned and the matter has also been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.”

MORE LIKE Chief Superintendent stuart williams said we've a duty and freehand to tazer anyone we like with impunity ;)

There have been several cases in the last few years when black males have been killed in custody!

One old guy was in hospital for physical illness. There was some problem he ended up being restrained by security and Police - ended up dead and the hospital could not give details to the family of what happened - I forget the names - if your want more details I can try and find some?

There was another black musician with mental illness who again was killed by Police in custody and several others in similar circumstances. This is one...
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk...s-7999484.html

It seems what is happened Police area using abnormal force on people who may display mental illness.

The constable who challenged the retired architect didn't even see his target's face. Apparently he saw the blind man as he was driving to the street where the man with the sword had been seen. He stopped his car behind the suspect pedestrian; that's why he hadn't realised the man was blind and using a straight stick, not a curved samurai sword. The blind man heard somebody shouting but hadn't realised it was aimed at him with the result that he received a 50,000 volt taser in his back.

I wonder if the police ever stop to think before acting? It would appear that they do not. The Tazer could kill if used wrongly on someone with an inserted defibrillator. It seems that they act forst and ask the questions later.
