Beer tax up 42% since 2008
I'm really surprised that no-one has highlighted this story.
Beer Tax Debate Heads To Parliament - Yahoo! News UK While it doesn't affect me directly...I don't drink beer. I think it does have an impact on the economy...especially the local economy. I'm sure that I have read that in Britain at the moment 30 pubs per week are closing because it is not profitable to sell beer. Maybe the chancellor will be crying into his own beer when all the pubs close down. Surely it would make better sense to cut the tax on beer sold in public houses and perhaps(I did say perhaps) raise the duty levied on beer sold in supermarkets. A closed pub raises no revenue.....it also damages the local economy by the very fact that a local amenity is no longer available.....no work for the brewer, the publican, the barman/maid.....less electricty and gas used, no income tax paid...benefits required by those thrown out of work......it just does not make any economic sense. Public houses are the place that most of us learn our debating skills.....make friends, meet out soulmate, have a bit of banter. Those are my views. What do you think? |

Re: Beer tax up 42% since 2008
Yes, it is real world stuff.
Not content with dealing the pubs a body blow with the smoking ban..they then jump on them with these crazy tax hikes which are well above inflation. If they really wanted to be of some use they would allow the publican to choose whether to have a smoking room inside the pub...rather than making smokers go and sit outside...and they would reduce the ridiculous tax on beer sold in pubs. Supermarkets are selling beer at below the price of the revenue it costs. this beer is bought not just by someone who wants to have a beer in the comfor t of their home, but those young folk who drink on street corners and in public parks. Wouldn't it make more sense to get the youngsters into the pub where they can be welcomed(but also monitored by landlords who know their business) to learn to drink sensibly.....rather than chucking as much cheap stuff down their throats. Would that reduce the amount of nuisance value that meighbourhoods have to endure? Would it reduce the amount of time spent by police in dealing with these nuisance situations? And before the health fascists get on my case about the perils of demon drink, and the hazards of smoking.......it is about having the choice. Most of us are old enough and responsible enough to make the choices. |
Re: Beer tax up 42% since 2008
Yes most of us are old enough and have at a younger age experienced the perils of drinking way too much.
When locals were locals however there was always someone that knew you and would see you home. Now the young drinkers don't know the benefits of a local they gather together in places with no experienced drunks and aren't taught that drinking to excess isn't really a good idea. I blame that new fangled horseless carriage called a taxi. |

Yes he was ahead of his time.....and did you come to any harm by frequenting such a place?
I guess the answer would be 'NO'. Anyway...who is Granny Pilky? It sure as hell isn't me. |

well, it might be the case when all the pubs are shut....though it is always better to have a face to face debate/discussion.

Re: Beer tax up 42% since 2008
In the past, revolutions were hatched during gatherings and discussions in ale houses.
I suppose governments are more comfortable now that 'subversive discussion' can be labelled 'terrorism' and tracked on the web. |
