Pope Idol

No one opened a Pope thread yet?

The contest is on to replace Benedict XVI. Over the coming months I hope you will join the discussion here for all the back stage gossip and rumours as the race to the Vatican hots up.

Remember, the vacancy is open to ANY male catholic, celibacy optional. Auditions open 1st March @ Sistine Chapel.

Saint Malachy prophesied that this 'last pope' would be black and named Peter.

It just so happens that the betting favourite is Ghanian Cardinal Peter Turkson

Cardinal Turkson seems to have some positive ideas about the threat of Islam in Europe. We certaily don't need a "hug-a-jihadist" kinda guy.

But Ouellet would be a good choice ... after all, there is a Canadian heading the Bank of England; so, why not the Catholic Church:D

Re: Pope Idol

To quote the Prophecy of St Malachy:

In persecutione extrema S.R.E. sedebit Petrus Romanus, qui pascet oves in multis tribulationibus: quibus transactis civitas septicollis diruetur, & Judex tremędus judicabit populum suum. Finis.

(In extreme persecution, the seat of the Holy Roman Church will be occupied by Peter the Roman, who will feed the sheep through many tribulations, at the term of which the city of seven hills will be destroyed, and the formidable Judge will judge his people. The End.)

The first paragraph is Latin (but you knew that).

I don't see any mention of the skin colour of the pope?

I didn't know there was a Rome in Ghana either. Or does Peter the Ghanian translate as Peter the Roman? My Latin isn't very good.

Ahhhh! I see. Far too subtle for me, MargaretR.
I still don't see where a black pope called Peter from Rome comes from.

The term 'black pope' is attributed to the chief cleric in the jesuit order, and signifies the deviousness of that branch of the church.

Malachy didn't say 'black' but there have been others who 'foresaw' and did.

I don't want to search for a link for you because I find websearching religion sets my teeth rather.

Re: Pope Idol

Maybes you're taking the black to literally, they may not mean black as a skin colour but in a more euphemistic way. Lets face it, they aren't exactly whiter than white & holier than thou some of these priests according to some of the hearsay.

The 10 Men Who Would Be Pope

There is one thing wrong with the list , Margaret . It does not include the man who will be the next pope .

The next pope will be Cardinal Tagle , the Archbishop of Manila . He will be the first pope to take the name Joseph , and so we will have Pope Joseph I in about a month's time .

The BBC's list of ten frontrunners includes Cardinal Tagle but is slightly different in other respects from Margaret's list.

It depends what you mean by "politics" and "religion" .
At their best they can mix well .

For example , William Wilberforce was a politician whose conversion to evangelical Anglicanism led him to head the parliamentary campaign against the British slave trade .

Also , Martin Luther King , a prominent Baptist minister , played a leading role in the American civil rights movement using non-violent civil disobedience .

On the other hand there was the mix of "religion" and "politics" in Northern Ireland which was , on the whole , a disaster .

But even there there was the Catholic M.P. , John Hume , a recipient of the Gandhi Peace Prize and the Martin Luther King Award , who was one of the architects of the Northern Ireland peace process .

Also , David Trimble M.P. , a prominent member of the Protestant Orange Order and leader of the UUP , played a key role in the negotiations that led to the Good Friday Agreement .

John Hume and David Trimble went on to be co-recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize .

Pope Frank accused of leaving his mates to be tortured by the junta in Argentina in the 70's and now listening to an interview on BBC 5live where Cardinal Wilfred Napier (allegedly a front runner for this papacy) is claiming that paedophilia is not a criminal activity....would have been fun if he'd been elected.

The incident referred to took place before Pope Francis was a bishop . It was during his time as the Jesuit Provincial of members of the Society of Jesus in Argentina .

Two members of the Society of Jesus were abducted in 1976 by Argentina's military government which was suspicious of their work among slum-dwellers .

Sergio Rubin is an author who , based on two years of conversation with Pope Francis , then Cardinal Bergoglio , Archbishop of Buenos Aires , wrote a book about him .

Sergio Rubin has said that Pope Francis " took extraordinary , behind-the-scenes action to save them . "

Hmm...his own personal biographer says this, then I guess it must be true

Strange that the surviving Jesuit simply says that he has made his peace with the pope and refuses to comment further, you'd think he'd jump at the chance to exonerate the head of his church.

No . I can accept that he is the head of the College of Bishops , but not of the Church .

"Christ is the head of the Church" ( Ephesians 5:23 ) .

I know that the Pope is often referred to in the media as the head of the Church , but it is incorrect .

In the same way the Archbishop of Westminster is often referred to as the head of the Catholic Church in England , but again this is incorrect . Cardinal Cormac , the retired Archbishop of Westminster , used to point out the inaccuracy of his being referred to in such a way .

If resorting to semantics means that I am seeking the accurate use of words leading to a correct understanding of the truth , then I am happy to be labelled as "semantic" .

I do think that his position is open for at least a little debate. I would agree that he is the Church's CEO; but, if you believe, then you have to admit that the founder of the organization is still alive and well, and that he exercises final authority, here on Earth, as well as in the rest of the Universe. I know that the thorny question of Papal Infallibility has to be considered; but it only recently became dogma ... First Vatican Council, I believe (I'm exercising my brain and eschewing google for a couple of days; so, please bear with me;)) Not quite within living memory; but not much older than my underwear. And maybe we shouldn't forget that one of his "official" titles is servus servorum Dei, and I believe that Pope Francis, conservative as he is, intends to be this.
