Expensive plastic bags

Trip to supermarket yesterday. The boss picked up a bag of 4 bananas with a big, bright label on saying £1. A good deal?
Near them were boxes of loose bananas, same country of origin, same condition, same sizes, labelled £0.68/kg. I looked at the bag and thought 4 bananas can't weigh 1.5 kg? So I weighed it- 0.61 kg, cost £0.41.
So she was paying £0.41 for the bananas, £0.59 for the bag!
I put the bag back, got 4 identical loose bananas, put them in a free bag- cost £0.43.
That has got to be a rip-off. I know someone has had to put them in the bag but come on! Who's packing them, the Managing Director?
I've seen it many times- two 1 kg bags of sugar for less than a 2 kg bag, a 4 pack of soup etc. dearer than 4 loose tins, even though it has a special label on to make you think bulk buying is cheaper.
The supermarkets are treating us as fools, knowing as we rush around we won't check things out and the big bright labels and bulk buys will auto suggest we are getting bargains.
I hate being ripped off!

An advantage of on-line shopping is that the 'small print' ingredients and the 'price per 100gram' are legible.

my dad told me years ago to always buy loose bananas, they are much cheaper, i suppose if you are none the wiser you wouldnt know, but now you are i guess you will always be buying them loose

What really burns my ass ... apart from the hemorrhoids ... is that many supermarkets will charge a nickle for a plastic bag:mad: I realize that plastic is not that good for the environment; and I do buy the re-usable bags. But, when you walk around the store, looking at the stuff on the shelves, you see that a lot of it is packed in, you guessed it, plastic:eek:

Well, that's were the Germans are saving the World instead of trying to invade it. The Supermarkets have various bins & buckets by the door so you can strip the packaging from your shopping & stick it in their bins. (Which the goes off to recycling).

Rather than taking it home, stripping off the packaging, putting it in the blue box, etc. Of course, the Germans have a history of recycling. Now, what was it they used as a sealant for U Boat periscopes?

Would be better if the packaging weren't there in the first place.

Yes...I agree with that. Why does cucumber have to be shrink wrapped in plastic?.
And we are encouraged not to use carrier bags(in Wales you are charged 5pence for every carrier bag you use) but our waste goes to the tip in plastic bags........they are not going to degrade very quickly are they?

I think it has something to do with birth control:confused:

Re: Expensive plastic bags

and about pawing the meat and veg........there was no plastic wrapping on anything when I grew up(the butcher sometimes had a fag hanging from the corner of his gob as he sliced the liver - with ash half an inch long)......we didn't come to much harm back then....anyway what is wrong with washing the veggies.......I peel most of mine anyway.

Eh? well....I know we used phallic shaped fruit and veg to show the application of condoms(when I was a nurse, that is), but I wouldn't like to be using the shrink wrap as birth control...it frequently has very rough seams....and holes too:eek:.

My on-line grocer - Ocado, takes back the plastic carrier bags and recycles them.

The worst for packaging ripoff is yet to come Easter eggs check the price of a bar of choc and check the same weight for easter egg then you will realise how much your paying for packaging :D

Margaret Pilkington 27-02-2013 06:30

Re: Expensive plastic bags

I don't buy Easter Eggs.......well not the big ones anyway. I buy the tinlids some other gift and they get either a bag of mini eggs or a Cadbury's Creme Egg...and they seem to have shrunk in the wash too!

Some people complain about thread wanders!

I just love the way so many threads wander down the same totally predictable path.

Now where were we? Plastic bags?? Boring!

Never boring Mr G
Some people deserve help pushing off from the precipice of boredom.
Here's a picture puzzle for those who do and for those who don't.

Try explaining that to a 3/5/9 year old!Lol.
I never bough my niece/nephew an easter egg. They had more than enough of those!I usually gave them a little gift instead-same with xmas I don't buy selection boxes, waste of packaging as well as wrapping paper! They get money now or little (useful to them) presents!Kids can get chocolate all year around now whenever, waste of money and healthy arteries!

Are food weighhouses still about? I used to love those for avoiding packaging. I buy in bulk as well especially on non-perishables. I'm from Yorkshire aren't I-being as tight as a crab's ass goes with the territory! :)

I'm not tight I'm just er, 'careful'. Lol. I guess I was brought up to be tight, but I'm generous too. No issues with spending money, just issues with wasting it! :)
I used to work for a Scottish group as clients, and they were a lot more generous than the actual company I worked for I have to say! But that's just one person's experience :)
