Thought I would just mention that a member off this forum is the Mayor of Hyndburn for the next 12 months, Judith Addison was installed as the mayor this week, I would like to wish Judith all the best for the next 12 months, knowing Judith like I do I'm sure she'll do an excellent job representing our borough and spreading the good name of Hyndburn everywhere she goes, good luck Judith

Thanks for your good wishes, folks! I have been very busy so far! Was made Mayor at the Council's A.G.M. Thursday evening and chaired the meeting - somewhat stormy in parts! Yesterday was Civic Celebration Day with meeting in the Council Chamber at 10.30 a.m., followed by Parade in the rain to St. James' Church for Civic Service, then parade back in the rain to Town Hall for Civic Lunch. Today I did the Church & Ossy Rotary Sponsored Walk and then went to Altham Parish Council Civic Service. If you're on Facebook I now have a "Mayor of Hyndburn" page.

The Title is Mayor always has been male or female

This thread reminded me that I was once a Mayor:eek: Mayor of the thriving community of Meyronne, Saskatchewan.:theband:

Meyronne, Saskatchewan - YouTube

When I was Mayor back in, oh, around '74, it was much bigger ... 95 souls.:D Originally a thriving pioneer community, it is now a little rough around the edges,;) another victim of progress and centralization in a Province booming with wheat, oil, potash, and uranium. I still love Saskatchewan, Land of the Living Skies.:theband:

I had this conversation with Judith the other day :)

Let's see how good my memory is. The mayoress is indeed the lady who accompanies a male mayor, ( I don't think they need to be married).

A female mayor's male partner would be the consort ( I think)

Strangely enough, Judith had the option of being addressed as Mr Mayor if she chose to do so, not suprisingly she chose the option of Madam Mayor :D

ossy kid 20-05-2013 20:21

Re: The Mayor

Now that's what I like, a "madam" for mayor.

Thats hardly a surprise, no lass in right mind would be called Mr Mayor.;)

Mayor of Meyronne eh Eric? So that,s where Ronnie Ronalde retired to eh? Hope that was his last recording.

Re: The Mayor

When acting as Mayor a Councillor has to take a non-political stance, both when out on engagements and when chairing the Council Meeting. The procedure for Council Meetings is laid down in the Council's Constitution, e.g. rules of debate, voting, etc. The Mayor has to keep order and treat all the Councillors equally and fairly. My dearest wish would be to see everyone working together for the good of the Borough and its residents, but unfortunately politics sometimes gets in the way! Most decision-making power is in the hands of the Leader and Cabinet - the majority of Councils operate this form of government now.

Judith Addison 20-05-2013 22:01

Re: The Mayor

Re titles - the person is titled Mayor whether male or female. As Mayors were always men in the past they were addressed as Mr. Mayor. This is still the form of address in some Boroughs, even when the Mayor is female, but most women Mayors now choose to be addressed as Madam Mayor.
The person accompanying the Mayor has no legal status and cannot deputise for the Mayor. If the Mayor was ill or otherwise unable to carry out an engagement the Deputy Mayor could be asked. The new Deputy Mayor is Councillor Munsif Dad. He will become Mayor next year.
If the Mayor (male or female) has a female to accompany them (partner, relative, friend), that person is titled Mayoress.
If the Mayor (male or female) has a male to accompany them, that person is titled Consort.
So, various permutations are possible! Sometimes a Mayor appoints both a Mayoress and a Consort. This is to split the workload, especially if they are in full-time work. Only one of them would go out with the Mayor to a particular engagement.

Re: The Mayor

Yesterday I took part as Mayor in the Church & Oswaldtwistle Rotary Club Sponsored Walk. I bought a hoodie and t-shirt from Giftprint in Peel Street and had the words "Mayor of Hyndburn" printed on. When the Mayor's Attendant came to collect me from home in the morning she said it was the first time in 21 years that she had to fasten the Mayor's chain to a hoodie!

Nah ... it's all my fault. As a dyed in the wool socialist, and a bleeding heart liberal, I tried to turn it into a peasant collective;):D

Re: The Mayor

Just to say that my Mayoress is Councillor Kathleen Pratt from Baxenden. You might have read in the local press about the controversy regarding who I could appoint as Mayoress or Consort. The Council resolved at its Annual General Meeting last Thursday evening that no Councillor who is a Cabinet Member or the Leader or Deputy Leader of any of our political groups can hold the position of Mayoress or Consort, which are essentially non-political roles. Councillor Pratt, who is a backbench Councillor like me, has kindly agreed to come on board as my Mayoress. Thank you Kath! I'm sure we'll make a great team!

You are actually the second Mayor we have provided for. The Mayor of Rossendale had a hoodie a couple of years ago. Maybe we need to start sending leaflets to all the Mayors in the country, I'm sure we could have some fun designing one for Boris :D

That's a good idea......I'm sure it would fly!
The best bit is that each new Mayor would want one of their own, so you could have a nice little earner on your hands.
Get the leaflet done and e-mail it to all the councils.

Re: The Mayor

I didn't dare order a blue hoodie or t-shirt because of the political connotations! I chose a purple hoodie and a jade green t-shirt so as not to appear politically biased! Similarly, when the lady doing the flowers for my Civic Service at St. James' Church said she had some beautiful blue silk ones for the window sills I said I daren't have that colour! So she recommended some nice cream ones instead!
