Yesterday's comment by that tory peer sums up the attitude of the government - north of Watford is already a wasteland so fracking sites can't make it more ugly and polluted than it already is.

Personally, I find open moorland more attractive than leafy lanes and village greens.

Let's be honest, we don't know, there are even some on site that say no to fracking but given the chance of fortified water gained from this, would buy it as some sort of health giving elixir, so long as it's offered from abroad with an iffy website recommending it.

Looking at your track record and the way you view the world, if you're agin it, I'm sure it's the best thing that could happen in our world.

Re: are you for or against ?

American film makers have a history of not using facts to make a fact based film. All they want is to get peoples attention and get them into the cinema to watch it. Only an idiot would use something they`ve seen in a film to make up their mind about something in real life.

DAV007 19-08-2013 21:36

Re: are you for or against ?

Only an idiot would not research the dangers and clear evidence of the deadly chemicals used in fracking and chose to ignore the facts.

gpick24 19-08-2013 21:47

Re: are you for or against ?

But you need to look at both sides of any arguement. Actually started watching that documentary, got about an hour in but had to stop it to nip out. Will watch the rest tomorrow night. But there are other sides to the story, documentaries made by the gas companies in reply to gasland (truthland) and another called Fracknation which was made highlighting the lies of gasland. haven`t seen either truthland or fracknation yet, may watch after i`ve finished gasland.

DAV007 19-08-2013 22:11

Re: are you for or against ?

One is made by a bloke with donations (dogwoof the film distributor is hardly flush with cash) the other is made with the support of a billion dollar industry with vested interest.

I haven't got a problem with vested interest, but the trustlands 'reply' film doesnt actually disprove anything gaslands says, it simply tries to muddy the water.

There has been no critique film of trustlands as that's not what the anti fracking movement is about, they have the evidence and facts, the problem they have is getting the information across.

Can you imagine if the town of Accrington was in the same position of hundreds out towns across America where the people have had fresh running tap water for years, they start fracking near by and now the government is delivering water to the population to drink and cook with because the tap water is no longer safe.

Until they can ensure fracking is relatively safe (the same way nuclear is relatively safe IMO) then it shouldn't be allowed to progress..
The technology and techniques are still developing, waiting a few years for further safeguards is a small price to pay than the public having to pay a far bigger fee to put right the potential mess current fracking company's are causing around the world.

this is interesting Fracking - SourceWatch

gpick24 19-08-2013 22:21

Re: are you for or against ?

I just find the "factual" films like this too unreliable, they are just after making money, a bit like the michael moore stuff. I don`t mind watching them sometimes but take their "facts" with a pinch of salt. e.g. here`s a jar of water, go get it tested, but don`t actually show where the water came from, they just say it came from their well.
Good banjo music though.

No they're not! There's no mention of fracking on that video either. It's caused by the soft rocks underneath dissolving away.

I'm guessing that when man first decided to dig underground for raw materials, that there were doom merchants who said that the ground would fall in and swallow whole villages and settlements.

Looking at the science it would seem it's ok as long as it's done carefully, therefore its about regulating it properly. Unfortunately I wouldn't trust a single MP in Westminster to think it through and put in a regulating body with teeth.

DAV007 23-08-2013 22:56

Re: are you for or against ?

Guinness,
I agree.

Im not a environmentalist, Im a supporter of nuclear power.
But nuclear power on the whole is regulated and governed to a high standard.

In the USA and potentially in Britain, the same regulation is not in place for fracking.

The situation in the USA is clear in my opinion - there is no problems with the local water supply, then the fracking begins and water supply becomes dangerous.
And its not only the water supply which becomes dangerous.

I understand why the government want it - and easy, quick financial economic hit which will create jobs.

But I doubt any of the political parties in Westminster will build regulation in the interest of the general public.
For a start, they will so what they did with the tv license, tax evasions laws, utilities, railways, etc - and use the industry's own advisors funded by the interest groups to advise on the regulation.
i have never seen turkeys voting for Christmas.

Obviously that sink hole has nothing to do with fracking. Do you have proof that fracking causes sink holes?
