Dryathlon? No Thanks.
So, Cancer research have had a wonderful new idea.
Give up drinking for January and send them the cash. http://www.cancerresearchuk.org/supp...nges/dryathlon A nice idea for them, not a very good idea for the drinks industry though is it? Can you imagine how many pubs would end up closing if we all joined in? How many redundancies would be forced onto breweries when lack of sales force them to reduce their staff? I've no problem with charities trying to get extra cash, should it be at the expense of another industry though? After all, charities are just another form of industry these days. |

Tell me - who has any cash left in January!!!!!

Less,
I though Jan was always the lowest drinking month of the year as people begin new years resolutions, try to lose weight from Christmas and new year excesses, etc |

I agree, Jaysay, that administration costs take up a lot of the donations made, which is not what the ‘givers’ intend the money for. A few years ago the adults in my family decided that instead of buying gifts for each other at Christmas (although we would still buy for the young ones of course) we would donate money to buy a goat or a sheep, a water purifier, etc., for some poor person in a Third World country.
Must admit, gave us a good feeling at the time. Did this the following couple of years – but then started getting inundated with begging requests from the same charity throughout the year. The good quality paper, the glossy literature and the postage would not have come cheap, a few goats would have had to be sacrificed to pay for it all - and I bet the charity isn't administrated by volunteers either. On top of that the wording almost ‘demanded’ that we continue giving – so we stopped! |

I did "dryathlon" last year. Not to raise money, just to have a month without alcohol to see if I missed it.
