I don't know how Boeing Guy does it!

BG does it every day, I don't think I could stand the excitement.

The dials, levers, switches, knobs, the info you have to process, the decisions. Between 525 to 853 people and your crew depending on you.
No wonder he's tested and given a medical twice a year.
Pilot's View Of Airbus A380 Approach And Landing At San Francisco

It's a bit of a long watch but worth it- see the ground staff salute at the end(and notice the music!).

They may get a bit of a break on autopilot but take off and landing-and the occasional emergencies in between-you've got to admire professionals such as these.

All Hail to Si and the guys who do this job......you are amazing.
Gordon, I thought that this video would be a 'boy' thing, but I really enjoyed watching it.

Thanks for the accolades both of you.
I am tempted to quote Gordo Cooper (one of the Mercury and Genimi Astronauts) ' Whos the best pilot in the world??????? your looking at him!

But seriously, the flight deck is not that scarey, all the main instruments are duplicated between Captain and First Officer.

The A380 is an amazing flight deck.

You are not supposed to tell us how you do it ... we want to guess;)

I learned all I want to know about flying on the airlines from George Carlin.:D

A video of the Boeing 737-300 from the flight deck. It's the same type I have been flying for the last few years.

They are old school, the more recent ones are more upto date!

Whenever my son and his wife fly, I always track the flight on this website
Flightradar24.com - Live flight tracker!

You can switch to the 'cockpit view' which uses google earth for its simulation.

This provides reassurance that your 'loved ones' are safe.

That was the case until their last flight back from Italy which showed the plane landing in a field south of the airport. For one terrible moment I thought they had crashed.

Virtual reality doesn't always depict the 'real'.

To be fair thought Margaret, the most dangerous part is the drive to and from the airport.

Even after BG's hours of tuition when I fly from Leeds to Manchester in a 737 (on the simulator) I do all right until I land, even though I land on the runway and don't over shoot I always finish with the port wheels in the grass. Looks like it's too late for me to apply for a job as second mate with you Si.

I know they're a bit old school, BG, but it was a bit worrying hearing the pilot having to handpump fuel to the engines while he's trying to land.
And the illuminated cross at the start of the runway. Is that to help him pray?

By the way, has anyone other than me read John Godson's "Unsafe at Any Height"?

Re: I don't know how Boeing Guy does it!

You laugh Gordon, but Cessna's dont have fuel pumps, it just as well the wings are above you.
Eric, i have not read that, but I will look it up.
Russell, looks like we will have to fit another lesson or two in mate.

Boeing Guy, thank goodness for people such as you - keep up the good work. What a super, interesting job you have. Nothing mundane about it, that's for sure.

when asked by my friend who is a nervous flyer on our way to spain how far i thought a plane could go on 1 engine if one of the engines failed i reassured him that it would have no problem getting us to the scene of the crash at all and not to worry :D
