More than likely they were doing a routine inspection for fire safety reasons, you'd be surprised how many times faults are found, locked doors, blocked passages, fire extinquishers missing or not serviced properly, emergency lighting not working properly, general untidiness, staff not aware of regulations, etc etc.
When some of you think they are just joy riding, they are not, they are making sure that your safe when your enter some one elses property.

And they do that job so damn well that the powers that be, reckon we can do without them...

Do they still do that? I thought it was a thing of the past and they have passed the responsibility onto the property owners now.

Muppets!

Who are the muppets? They don't even follow there own advice. Read this about an 8 year old fire station burning down that didn't have sprinklers.

BBC News - Gutted Downham Market fire station had no sprinklers

At a guess..architects who haven't watched the Towering Inferno (the ones who save a few quid for the jerry building developer) or the planning department (staffed by jobsworths who insist on wearing goggles to play conkers but have no idea what H&S is really about) for passing the plans.

This was a retained fire station..i.e. a place generally only used in an emergency, staffed by people who only attend on call outs or training.....do you expect them to do a 2 hour pen and paper fire safety check before they go out on an emergency shout or would you rather they arrived at your house to save your kids?

I guess it's easy to knock brave people currently sat at home with their pagers beside them, constantly ready to put their lives on the line, using a 'silly season' story as evidence and thereby justifying moronic cutbacks that are hazardous to every single one of us.

Your argument is just a 'cheap shot'.
