This should be one for the Czars.

I hate being intimidated by beggars.

I will happily buy The Big Issue but I find it unnerving to be accosted in the street and asked for money.

If so many people are aware of this parasite, then surely the Community Wardens or the police should do something about it. :(

Re: Beware Of This Girl

I know who you mean. We call her "Spare change guys girlfriend" as her boyfriend is mostly sat outside doing nothing but begging and she seems to take over on his days off.
They do get moved, but then they wander round and accost people when they are coming out of the newsagents on Broadway.

If this is the person I think she once asked me for 10p to get a coffee, I replied you show me where to buy coffee for 10p and we'll both have one, she shrugged and walked away......

It may be likely that they can make more money doing nothing.

May be they require money for their habit?

I never give...on the street, at the front door, or over the phone or internet...just walk away.

I give my time and support to my chosen charities...such as Children with Leukaemia. But not beggars....no need in this day and age!

Re: Beware Of This Girl

I really resent beggars - we have a lot of them in London, and apparently for some of them it is a career option. I feel guilty if I don't give them anything, and taken for a ride if I do, so I can't win. Why should I be made to feel bad?

I used to see one at Vauxhall tube station, he had a sign saying "Need to get home to my family in Durham, but don't have the fare. Please help". One day I offered to take him to Kings Cross and buy him a ticket. Guess what reaction I got? - the word "off" figured largely!

This is not Rix and his Mrs launching a final ground-breaking initiative before he departs, is it?

i know this is an old one but it reminds me of a woman in blackburn town center she stand outside mc donalds and asks people to buy her a meal she then puts it in her bag and asks somebody else to buy her something

Re: Beware Of This Girl

Re: Beware Of This Girl

I have been approached by a begging woman twice outside the bingo at the top of Oxford St. I think that she must consider pensioners who gamble are a 'soft touch'. Both times she said she needed bus fare to get home.
Persons who are stranded penniless away from home can contact Social Services via the police. There used to be social workers on 'standby' with a 'kitty' 24/7 to provide that type of help - probably a service that still exists.

When I was walking around Manchester the other week, I noticed a filthy old tramp sitting in a bus shelter holding a coffee cup. Felt really sorry for him and, on impulse, I chucked a pound coin into his cup. This was followed by a loud "plop" and I suddenly realised it was a half-full cup of coffee. The withering look of contempt he gave me said it all, really. Another Mr Bean moment, as Mrs H would say!

I was at a well to do cafe/bar in downtown palermo, sicily. A guy came upto me and my wife and asked me for ten euros, not one or two but ten. I said No thanks, politely and firmly. He then said to me that he was desperate, I replied that I was as well! He then walked away to the next table!

I know it's very fashionable to believe that everyone who begs for money is a scrounger and out to con you, but I can't help thinking, "there but for the grace of God could be any of us".

Sorry, but I don't know what you mean. Did he not doff his cap to you and call you guvnor? What do destitute people look like? I assume you were on holiday and he was begging for money? I know which I'd rather be doing.

I'm not really having a personal go at you Green Lantern, but some of the things that people post on threads like this........... well, they leave me speechless. ;)
