Gt harwood war memorial

Just seen an article in the local fish & chip wrapper.
Legion organises service to remember 389 WW1 soldiers (Gt Harwood)
Well they had better do something, there are 23 names missing from that War Memorial, some are recorded in St Huberts & St Johns Church, others are on the Gt Harwood Roll of Honour, one man who is missing a Thos McNamee, his brother William is on the memorial. Another missing man is
Joseph Rishton, he was an original ACCRINGTON PAL.

I just don't get it .... is it because of sloppy record keeping by the army? Or is it because original errors just keep getting repeated because folks don't bother to do the proper research?

When was the War Memorial constructed?

Most of the War Memorials in Greater Accrington were completed by 1922, a lot of the errors on these memorials can be traced back to sloppy recording in the Greater Accrington Roll of Honour by the Accy Observer, and local authority's failure to investigate.
There are 37 names missing, including 9 Accrington PALS from Accys Memorial, 14 double entries, 17 spelling mistakes, and one man who didn't die. There are still names missing from Ossy's new plaques, which also includes a man who was still alive in 1940, they were told before they started on those new plaques but they wouldn't listen
.

I thought so. A combination of stupid, lazy, and stubborn. I'm wondering if it's the same everywhere for every unit? I realize that some mistakes are inevitable, given the large number of casualties, but what you tell me seems to be a tragedy of errors.
