What would you give up?

If you had to give up either tv or stereo, which would you choose?

This may be presumptuous, but my guess is that the boys will keep the music and the girls the tv, but I am only going on a small part of the population where this applied.

So I thought I would do a poll as well!

Re: What would you give up?

I could live without TV quite easily but would hate to live without music. Someone once asked me what would be worse to lose my sight or my hearing and I think it would be the latter in spite of the fact that I enjoy handicrafts and art, I would just so miss music.

Re: What would you give up?

I voted music, but I could probably live without them both if I had to. I much prefer books - those I couldn't live without.:)

How odd, that you should say that Willow. Despite having done my degree in art, I long ago reached the same conclusion; I would rather loose my sight than my hearing.

I would give up the stereo, because after all i could always listen to music on cable.

Odd also that you and I were thinking more in terms of sight and hearing rather than the specific items mentioned.

Re: What would you give up?

I would quite happily give up tv. When Grego and I were in our early 20's we bought a house together in order to get a foot on the property ladder. We lived quite happily without tv for several months because we didn't have any extra money to pay for a tv or license. We had a stereo and plenty of books and were quite happy with that at the time. I do have a tv now, but I don't watch it that often. Partly because there is rarely anything decent to watch and partly because I have better things to do..:D

I could quite happily pass-up on the Magic Lantern. Let's face it, how much quality programming is there on the box these days? Not a lot!
If there are travel documentaries scheduled, I will make the effort to watch those; Michael Palin's world tours are favourites of mine. Billy Connolly Down Under... In New Zealand, is top of my must-watch list at the moment, because I'm going there for a month next year, with Lettie.

I usually have some music playing when at home. When I am messing about on Accyweb, I listen to bbc 6Music streamed on broadband. I vote to keep my music.

Re: What would you give up?

We don't have a TV, either in London or in Ossy, but try telling that to the TV Licensing authority - they refuse to believe it and want to send someone round to check whether we are lying!

I would hate to live without music, though - don't think I could do it. I have always agreed with Willow that I would rather lose my sight than my hearing, and can honestly say that, having almost lost my sight through cataracts (now fixed - thanks, Moorfields!), whilst it is very frightening to glimpse the world vaguely through a fog, I do believe that being deaf is much more isolating.

So, no TV thanks, but let me keep my stereo system, my Walkman and my CD Walkman.

I will be very interested in the results of this, as it touches on the subject of the PhD I've always promised myself I'll do when I can afford to retire from paid employment!

vorlon24 09-12-2004 13:19

Re: What would you give up?

Well the results so far seem to be going the way I expected.

Mainly boys to keep the music and girls to keep the tv!

There are of course a few exceptions, but isn't that always the way?!

Margaret Pilkington 10-12-2004 15:09

Re: What would you give up?

I could happily give up the TV......the current stuff on the box is a whole load of C**p with just a few exceptions. And I too, would rather be blind than deaf.

I need both of my computers - one for work and the other for Vice City.

I use the internet on both!!!

garinda 18-08-2005 01:52

Re: What would you give up?

Neither.

If I had to choose I would rather be deaf than blind, I am just a very visual rather than aural person.

I had a tear of joy seeing the sunset tonight, mind you listening to Marie Callas has the same affect.

If I were deaf I could always sing, and I wouldn't be able to hear how awful it was.

Re: What would you give up?

I could live without the TV and have done in the past, I much prefer music and books. Hadn't realised how old this thread was until I read that Sparky and Lettie were going to NZ, I thought they'd booked to go again!

garinda 18-08-2005 10:30

Re: What would you give up?

OMG, total confusion????

I didn't realise it was an old thread until I just scrolled through the dates and it looks like my enrty last night was the post that did it!

I am totally confused though, as it was on the same page last night as the latest threads!

I too wondered how Mez was posting from her hols at the same time as asking me as asking me to send a pm for her!

I do sometimes look through old threads , but this wasn't one, I should have used my much valued sight more effectively!!!

garinda 18-08-2005 11:00

Re: What would you give up?

Mystery solved as to why this thread was on the current front page.

Someone voted in the poll last night but didn't comment, which brought it to the top and totally confused me.:)

Re: What would you give up?

could live without telly- did do when i lived in spain didnt bother me much, but certainly couldnt live without my music, which was more difficult to obtain than an tv. so its got to be goodbye telly if it came down to it.

wayneyboy1942 18-08-2005 14:54

Re: What would you give up?

There's no contest!!! I'd give up the telly! What would people do if they can't watch house buying/doing up or buying/selling junk n tat which makes up most of the TV schedule!!!!!

SPUGGIE J 17-09-2005 19:13

Re: What would you give up?

The goggle box aint worth what we pay and threr are repeats galore. At least with music you have variety and can listen to your hearts content.

Georgie Saint 17-09-2005 19:50

Re: What would you give up?

I must say. I miss my British TV loads. The telly and radio here is crap. Being away really makes you appreciate just how good UK telly really is. So I cannot understand why so many people complain about it.

grego 17-09-2005 19:58

Re: What would you give up?

I think you have a point Georgie, when your away from it you will miss it, but when its just there you can live without it, I'm finding the programmes on tv at the minute quite good but in general if I had to choose I'd still choose music.

slinky 17-09-2005 20:33

I would give uo t.v..................I so love music, it makes up for the t.v loss.

West Ender 17-09-2005 21:09

Re: What would you give up?

I don't watch much TV so it can go. I need music and my kind isn't often played on radio, Big Band Swing, early Rock'n'Roll, Dixieland Jazz - oh I could make a very long list - so I must have the hi-fi.

Just don't ask me to give up Radio 4. ;)

can we still listen to radio shows?? are they included in the music bit?? i love the goons!!!

Tinkerbelle 18-09-2005 20:21

Re: What would you give up?

TV! Take it! Take the DVD too, and the video, just don't touch any of my music!! On the odd occasion (pmsl) when I can't remember whether i locked the car up or not the only thing I'm worried about is if my CD's will still be there !!!

chav1 18-09-2005 20:43

Re: What would you give up?

there are quite a lot of tv shows i like but i would drop tv in a heartbeat if if it came to a choice between music or tv

tv shows are entertaing yes but songs can have great memories attatched to them and hearing a familiar tune on the radio for example can change your mood instantly

SPUGGIE J 20-09-2005 11:57

Re: What would you give up?

I am surprised more girls would give up music than TV. Maybe they cannot live without soaps and reality tv, what a thought a soap starved girl with withdrawl symptoms from corrie scarry very very scarry.

Some surprising results though!
