Yorkshire Bank in Accrington to Close
Pretty soon Accrington is going to be a ghost town.
It has been announced today that the Yorkshire Bank in the town is set to close on the 31st of August. All accounts held at that bank will be transferred to Blackburn. I have been with this bank since 1957 so it is a bit of a blow to me. And I bl**dy well hate Blackburn. |
Re: Yorkshire Bank in Accrington to Close
Even worse for me, the Impostas closed.
|
Re: Yorkshire Bank in Accrington to Close
Isn't it great when the press find out before the customers. We have been with Yorkshire Bank since 2002, but tomorrow I will be going to close our accounts and bank elsewhere.
|
Re: Yorkshire Bank in Accrington to Close
I have been with this bank since I was 10 years old. I got a metal book saving box at Peel Park School.
Recently there was a notice up in the bank encouraging other bank customers ( whose branches were closing in the town)to join the Yorkshire Bank. They will feel really hacked off. As I say, it is becoming a ghost town. What about the businesses in the town......oh, well pretty soon there won't be any. And there we are building a bus station....that'll be to take people out of town to do their banking. |

Just been in Yorkshire Bank this morning. The staff are gutted. They only found out yesterday morning.
|
Re: Yorkshire Bank in Accrington to Close
Thing is wi all thats closing, the council have planned ahead!! A new Bus Station to get the hell outa town.
|
Re: Yorkshire Bank in Accrington to Close
And it appears that the new bus station is going to affect the one way system, the monument at the bottom of st james street has been removed - I'm told to make way for the buses, a tree has already been chopped down.
Heck knows where they will go - most likely heading as cashy says. |

They are closing in August
|
Re: Yorkshire Bank in Accrington to Close
Yes, I put that in my the first post.
I have been in the bank this morning with some questions that I needed answering before I made any decisions. I have to say that the staff were very helpful(as always). It appears that the lease on the building is up and that along with the fact that more people are using the Internet seems to have sealed the fate of the bank. |

It is ok Frank. No smacked hands.
It is all a bit of a shock for everyone.....and a facer for the town. |

Surely a bigger shocker than a bank/building society moving for profit is PPI? Yet another dodgy deal they have been involved with. However even though they must have records of whom they ripped off they only have to pay out IF you apply to get it back. Honesty and banks, convenience and banks? No profit and banks that's all they believe in. Suffer it. |

The Yorkshire Bank has always seemed to be one of the smaller banks.....a bit more personal. And yes, they did start the trick that the big banks try.......selling you financial products that you neither want or need.....but once told that I did not want to have financial products promoted.....that I was more than capable of seeking out the services that I required, they stopped doing it. It always seemed that bit more friendly. Not quite as stuffed shirt-ish. It has been part of my life for a long time now. I did not expect the branch to close as it always seems busy when I have gone in.......and until today there was a sign up telling those whose local branches in the town were closing, to bring their accounts to The Yorkshire. I have two options. I can do as you say - suffer it, or I can change banks. I have arrived at that time of life when change is very unsettling. So I guess I will stick with it.......and visit the branch in Blackburn as little as possible. |
Re: Yorkshire Bank in Accrington to Close
The problem with switching banks is that you have to try and pick one that isnt going to leave town or you may find yourself having to switch again
it may be a good idea to ring the local news paper before opening a new account as they get to nkow things way before customers do |
Re: Yorkshire Bank in Accrington to Close
Dont worry about switching Margaret, i had to in December (first time in my life) i was bothered also, but all for nowt, The bank i chose ( for the service i needed) sorted everything out set up my direct debits etc in fact everything and it was seamless.;)

Re: Yorkshire Bank in Accrington to Close
Cashy, you are probably the holder of a passport or some other form of photo ID.
I am not. I do not need a passport......I have not driven for 13 years so my driving licence is an old green and white paper one. I know that you have to provide ID as a hedge against fraud and money laundering......but I don't want to change. I have been happy with the bank, I have not been ripped off with PPI.......I would not know who to choose.......and I have become resistant to, and irritated by forced change. Those who choose to change will see the change from a different viewpoint, but those who have been forced to change(by circumstance) may not feel as relaxed about it. My main concerns were for Ma and her savings account(she still has a dark blue leather like savings book) but when I went in yesterday I was reassured that this could be converted into a simple current account. This would be far easier for Ma to pay her bills from. Now all I have to do is convince her of this fact. This will be akin to getting an audience with the Pope. The good thing is I do have until the end of August to sort it.(I like a challenge) |
Re: Yorkshire Bank in Accrington to Close
They never asked for me passport, i just produced my driving licence.bank statement etc. i also didn't want to change, just had no choice.
|
Re: Yorkshire Bank in Accrington to Close
We switched to Nationwide yesterday and we were told it will all be over and done with in 7 working days. The standing orders and direct debits were all sorted by Nationwide. Any payments that are due in the 7 days will still be paid by the bank you are transferring from. There was no hassle at all.
|
Re: Yorkshire Bank in Accrington to Close
Cashy, if it was a photo driving licence then that replaces a passport...you have to have one or the other. I have neither.

Re: Yorkshire Bank in Accrington to Close
I joined Yorkshire bank some 30 years ago when I worked at Platts.it was handy to nip down at lunchtimes, when I retired I joined Santander and they did all the legwork to transfer my account. It was the best thing I could have done and now they have the
123 account it is even better, next door to new bus station also.I would recommend them. |
Re: Yorkshire Bank in Accrington to Close
Thanks Big Dave......but they have recently had security problems with their ATM's.
I am not changing right now...sometimes it is better to wait and see. If I can get along using the online banking service.....without much need to having to go to the branch in Blackburn then that will do for me. If there prove to be problems with this option, then I will have to rethink the situation. |

Re: Yorkshire Bank in Accrington to Close
Are there no Credit Unions? In Kingston, we have two major CUs, the Kingston Community Credit Union, and the Kwartha Credit Union. There are branches all over the city. The KCCU even has an outlet at Kingston General Hospital. The credit unions are regularly voted the top financial institutions in the city. I've been a credit union member ever since I came to Canada. Banks ... no thanx.
|
Re: Yorkshire Bank in Accrington to Close
I think there are some credit unions, but I am not sure how they operate.
I think that some people who cannot get a bank account can secure loans from them at reasonable rates. Jen is the person to ask. I am sure she would be able to give us chapter and verse on Credit unions. |
Re: Yorkshire Bank in Accrington to Close
I agree with you Big Dave. The Santander 1.2.3 account is brilliant. We get more back with that than with interest. I sympathise with you Margaret. I am not a lover of change either as I find it very unsettling. I hope you get it sorted out soon. I hope those of you who have elderly parents have had the good sense to get a 'Enduring Power of Attorney.'so you are able to sort their money or other important things out without any trouble .

Re: Yorkshire Bank in Accrington to Close
The Yorkshire Penny Bank was a precursor to credit unions.
It was set up primarily to help the working class put small amounts away as a hedge against hard times. To me this bank has never had the grasping feel of the major banks. It has always felt like a 'family' concern......but maybe that is because I have been with them for so long. |
Re: Yorkshire Bank in Accrington to Close
HSBC , Accrington branch closes at the end of this month too.

here you go Margaret .. :D fccu the credit union is up on the balcony in the market hall ... on the right hand side ... its open on Tuesday, Thursday and Fridays 10am to 1pm. Its run mostly by volunteers (yes im one) ... If you become a member you get a paying in book or you can set up a standing order ... we need proof of date of birth, name, address and national insurance number, and to open your account we will need £7 ... £5 to go in your account and £2 membership fee. After that you can put in 50p or £50 ... we'll take whatever .. The credit union has 3 different accounts, the main account is your shares account (this is used as your collateral if you get a loan and if you have a loan until your loan is below whats in your account you cant draw any money out of it and then only the difference), then we have the no 2 account (savings account if you have a loan you can draw out of this one) and the Christmas savings (this one you cant draw any money out till the 31st October). Anything else you want to know ... by the way we always need volunteers :D |
Re: Yorkshire Bank in Accrington to Close
Thanks Jen.
I knew that you would know all about it as you are active in providing support. I think the credit union is a good way to get into a savings habit when you haven't got much money. The Yorkshire Penny Bank started out in much the same way.....and it was aimed at those who had little money to save, but wanted to have something in reserve against the 'rainy days'. Jen, all power to your elbow. You do a great job. Right now I haven't much time to volunteer for anything much. I am busier than when I worked full time. |
Re: Yorkshire Bank in Accrington to Close
Got my letter today.

Re: Yorkshire Bank in Accrington to Close
Another one bites the dust...B&M Bargains, Union St branch is closing down.
The larger store near Aldi will remain. |
Re: Yorkshire Bank in Accrington to Close
Anyone with Yorkshire bank can put cheques in at the post office as I use them and do most of my banking online I will not be changing just use the post office if I need to
|
Re: Yorkshire Bank in Accrington to Close
Yes Mick, you can use the post office to put cheques into your account and also to pay bills.
I can see the post office being busier than ever. I wonder if they are charging the Yorkshire Bank for this service.....after all, nobody does anything these days without wanting a bit of dosh. |
Re: Yorkshire Bank in Accrington to Close
Might be worth noting that in many cases a tax code notification from HMRC is accepted as ID, I used one for my mortgage as my passport had expired.
|
Re: Yorkshire Bank in Accrington to Close
I didn't know that Lindsay. I know that when I wanted to draw £5000 out of my account to pay for building work, I was asked for photo ID and had nothing that was deemed suitable so himself had to provide the ID for me to get the money(it is a joint account).

Re: Yorkshire Bank in Accrington to Close

That might be suitable for some people, but not for everyone.

Re: Yorkshire Bank in Accrington to Close
Just been informed that Yorkshire bank is closing because the management asked the council, (who own the building), for a ten year lease but this was refused, I was told, rightly or wrongly that St James Street and Broadway will be reopened to bus traffic as a new measure once the bus station is built.
New measure ! in the 60s I used to catch the Huncoat bus outside the library and it travelled down St JamesStreet and along Broadway and then up either Burnley Road or Avenue Parade. So much for the signs around the borough that state, HYNDBURN AN EXELLENT COUNCIL, (Who say's). Never mind, stay happy in adversity, your's as ever Taddy |
Re: Yorkshire Bank in Accrington to Close
Got my letter today from Yorkshire Bank saying sorry to lose me.
|
Re: Yorkshire Bank in Accrington to Close
Yes, I was told the same Taddy.
It seems like the council actually WANT to see the demise of this town.and it is true that the street is being opened to traffic and that is why the stone sculpture at the bottom of the street has been moved to a new spot near the bottom of St James Church. |
Re: Yorkshire Bank in Accrington to Close
If thats the reason its closing, its bloody disgraceful, :( like the way they implemented this Bus Station.anyone voting for this council should be put in the stocks.

Good god sir! We are British, Vitai Lampada ("They Pass On The Torch of Life") There's a breathless hush in the Close to-night -- Ten to make and the match to win -- A bumping pitch and a blinding light, An hour to play and the last man in. And it's not for the sake of a ribboned coat, Or the selfish hope of a season's fame, But his Captain's hand on his shoulder smote -- 'Play up! play up! and play the game!' The sand of the desert is sodden red, -- Red with the wreck of a square that broke; -- The Gatling's jammed and the Colonel dead, And the regiment blind with dust and smoke. The river of death has brimmed his banks, And England's far, and Honour a name, But the voice of a schoolboy rallies the ranks: 'Play up! play up! and play the game!' This is the word that year by year, While in her place the School is set, Every one of her sons must hear, And none that hears it dare forget. This they all with a joyful mind Bear through life like a torch in flame, And falling fling to the host behind -- 'Play up! play up! and play the game!' Sir Henry Newbolt (1862-1938) And other such patriotic bullshine to make us believe it could never happen here! |

No never, just not British. Some people appear to save stories for months until it's the right time to get them in the papers, strange that

I know that it doesn't make it true, but I was just saying where my bit of information came from. I didn't say it was true...I just said what I had been told.(pretty much the same as another member of the forum)
But even if this was misinformation, it did not come from a local politician who has mileage to make by talking down the current leading party. It doesn't ring true that those at the bank would want to get embroiled in the day to day feudings of local politics. |

Re: Yorkshire Bank in Accrington to Close
My good lady, (also refered to as the wife),and I, had an appointment yesterday with the switch team at Santander in Padiham. A very pleasant lady took us through all the in's and out's of switching from Yorkshire to Sandander, after two pots of tea (the wife not me) and a two hour discussion all was settled.
Hazel, (the wife) said, can I still have a pass book,"of course you can", can I still have a cheque book, "of course you can", can I still have bla bla bla, "of course you can". Nothing was too much trouble, so after neary fifty year's of banking with Yorkshire all will be changed in a few day's. Stay happy as alway's, Your's Taddy.:):):) |

I started with a round metal cash box with the apropiate slots for different amounts. I'll bet the clerks wouldn't be too happy about emptying them these days. Funnily enough I still have the passbook in my posession over 60 yrs later Tal. |
