Up, Down & Over ?

Funny how we seem to prefix places with Up, Down or Over.
Being from Clayton it was always;

Down Accy, Up Ossy & Over Harwood.

Would just be strange any other way........

It was same living in Accrington. Down accy means going it town. strange how Ozzy is up and Harwood is over, but its always been the same. But Clayton for me has always been "goin to Clayton"

It's always strange when it's going up to London when it's down south.

Must be from Harwood saying up to London, it's up to Scotland and down to London, or at least it was!! Has the south moved or summat?

It was always down to London or down south to me.

The railways use the term "up train" to trains heading to London.
Likewise the Down miday Scot was heading to Glasgow from London.
If it was down to London we could free wheel all the way.

Up the road, down the road, interchangeable most times regardless where you're standing. (probably a Scouse thing. :))

What about Top Club, Middle Club and Bottom Club, are they a bit thick in Clayton, or is it just that they can't remember place names when they've had a few?;)

Never saw anything wrong with naming the 3 wmc's in Clayton, top, middle & bottom - it described exactly where they were & everyone knew where you meant - saw a few puzzled faces when asked where the 'Come & Welcome' or 'Park View' were, shame there's now only one of the three left now

Has the Park View closed, I was in there last year taking a photo of their WW1 Roll of Honour, if its gone do you know where the R-O-H is, it needs to be safe guarded. Bill Turner & I rescued quite a few from going down the tip.

As far as I know Park View is still open, could be wrong but haven't heard that it isn't - will double check & post again when I find out

Re: Up, Down & Over ?

For me,it was also "down Accy" (meaning into the town centre),"down Clayton" (meaning the ("Jam butty") council estate ,"up Bash" (meaning the park in Baxenden),"up Fern gore" (meaning the park in Fern gore) and "over yonder" (meaning any place other than where you are stood) :)

If it's up to Scotland and down to London the Top Club is further south than the Bottom Club so, therefore, Top is Bottom and vise versa. Well it seems to be in Clayton.:)
