Do you know where your nearest defibrillator is?

Just asking because I know, I thought my partner was having a heart attack on Monday night and I was told by the ambulance service to get it quickly.
I got it straight away but luckily I didn't have to use it
My partner is fine now but I think that all should know where this equipment is because it could be worth finding out.

Nearest to me now(if it's still there) is Clayton outside the library

Yes and me...I think I would be alright. I have used a defibrillator before and I am told that the current ones give you instructions.
Glad to hear that your partner is alright Bob...it must have been very scary.

Glad your partner is ok. I have no idea where there is one near me. I didnt even know there were ones for the public to use. Wouldnt think it is a good idea to leave someone you suspect of having a heart attack while you go off to find one anyway.

No I was in a panic I got a next Door in, if you think this is it your brain doesn't work properly, I just think everyone should know if this is needed.

Is there a register of where these are situated within the borough?

Thanks, accyman, have checked, none anywhere near where I live, shall have to rely on paramedics!!
Although, not sure how up to date map is, as I know that one has been installed in Baxenden in recent months, & not shown.

Thanks anyway.

re: Do you know where your nearest defibrillator is?

it might be an idea for them to show only ones that are available and charged ready for use as there was an issue with one been missing for some considerable amount of time due to it getting left somewhere uncharged

it was tracked down eventually and recharged then put back

re: Do you know where your nearest defibrillator is?

I have checked on the map but unfortunately the nearest one is in Trawden which is miles away. Seeing as I am only 5 mins from Burnley General I am better waiting for an ambulance. I think these devices are useful but unless you knew exactly how to use one it would take ages reading the instructions . I know from personal experience that if the person who needs immediate aid is a loved one it is very hard to think straight . My mum collapsed outside Burtons in Accy Arndale and I couldnt have told you my name never mind anything else. I do think it is vital for junior football or cricket or other sports groups to have one onsite and have a few people trained to use them.

re: Do you know where your nearest defibrillator is?

These defibrillators are specially designed to be used by lay people...but yes, I get what you are saying.
At times of stress we are inclined to go into panic paralysis.
I have had extensive experience, but could not guarantee that in circumstances where a family member was in dire straits, I would remain cool and collected.
You never know until you are tested...and I hope to forego that.

Each of these machines costs something like £2,000.

Think my nearest is Accrington Acadamy. Also there's one at Asda and I think there's one round the corner from the town hall on Broadway

re: Do you know where your nearest defibrillator is?

I hope you never find out Margaret. I was lucky in that the paramedics came quite quickly but it was all in vain. (I still dont like walking past that bit of the Arndale). I was unaware there were some available for public use .

Yes, and the ambulance will probably take you to Blackburn!

I test my family quite regularly ..theyre used to getting phone calls from ambulance men/women and strangers with the words do you know the person whos phone this is .. shes ill ...shes been took in an ambulance to .... :p yes I know I can laugh .. and its hard being on the other side .. I know because ive been on the other side but then things seem to kick in first its panic . then what to do .. ring an ambulance, recovery position, check breathing,

Margaret Pilkington 26-05-2017 12:47

re: Do you know where your nearest defibrillator is?

Yes Jen, you have more experience than most...and of both sides of the coin...with yourself and with you looking after your mum.
Most of my experience was in a professional capacity...but even then, you are never really sure just how you will react. You hope that your training kicks in...and I have to say that in every case mine has.
I have also had a few alarms with Ma and so far, the nurse in me steps forward and pushes the daughter out of the way.
When Ma had her heart attack, it was like someone else took over and did the first aid stuff.
Himself says I am 'a cool half back'...it is afterward that it all hits home with me.

shillelagh 26-05-2017 12:58

re: Do you know where your nearest defibrillator is?

that's why I think everyone should have some basic first aid training ... should be taught it in schools .. and then if anything should happen when you out and about .. it teaches you not to panic ...

Margaret Pilkington 26-05-2017 13:22

re: Do you know where your nearest defibrillator is?

I think a lot of schools do some first aid stuff...especially the CPR...it is still scary though...even when you are trained.

shillelagh 26-05-2017 14:03

re: Do you know where your nearest defibrillator is?

I know ... but it gives you a bit of confidence as well ..

Its not that long ago I did scare someone I dropped and had a fit right in front of him .. he'd never seen one before .. first he rang an ambulance for me, made sure I was alright .. and then he rang his dad .. when I came fully too .. he'd gone but the ambulancemen where there ... I had an ambulance parked outside mine for a couple of hours that day ... but I was grateful someone was there ... and made sure I was ok ...

Re: Do you know where your nearest defibrillator is?

Do not take that AED locations website as accurate (as in up to date) - it is not showing several of the defibs that are in Rawtenstall.
There is one outside the Library, another at the end of Kay street.

A first aiders training to use one of these is simple and for some weird reason is only valid for 12 months, yet the public can use them?
