What do you find frustrating?

I’m normally an easy-going person, but now and then something really annoys me. It might not be a big thing, just something minor, but very aggravating. I thought it might be fun, well interesting at least, to hear what others find frustrating. I’ll start this thread off with listing some things that annoy me:

Ring-pulls that break off before their job is done
Extremely hard to open jars and packages
Cooking instructions on the above that are too small to read
Childproof tops on tablet containers that no-one can open, especially adults

jars opening does annoy me as i have to open em all why dont they make easy of for the wife to open.

Because, she needs a strong man about the house.....

What frustrates me?
Tech....and not being able to master something to do with tech.
Why does each new innovation have to be a little more complex than the last version?
And why isn’t there a universal camera charging cable...phone cable.....why do we need to have bags of cables for tech items????....I have a zippered bag near my computer with a snakes nest of cables for various bits of tech kit.
Surely it is not beyond the skills of the makers of this gear to come up with a universal cable that fits all.

Another thing that frustrates me....and I bear scars as a testament to this....are those rigid plastic packaging things that some products are encased in.
Why can’t they have a pull strip that will release your item without having to resort to sharp knives and scissors......these leave sharp edges that you can cut yourself on.

Instructions that are anything but clear and need a magnifying glass to read them.
Shampoo bottles that refuse to give up the last bits of shampoo....aha, but I get my other half to cut these open so that the frugal side of me feels the bottle is truly empty.

Oh there are so many things that frustrate me.....Dotti, you will be sorry you asked

I pay no mind to these....Nature gave me a nose....if it looks alright, smells alright then I eat it...or serve it up to himself.
Best before dates are just a ploy by manufacturers to sell more of their product by getting you to ditch perfectly good food based on what they think is a Best Before Date.
I treat Use by dates with the same contempt.

All to do with the above advert, what a useless set of posers, living in perfect houses with enough room for a private gymnasium cluttered with a bike that goes nowhere but connects you to other like minded idiots.

If you really, really have to exercise then get a proper bike get out there pedal like mad and enjoy the views of the countryside much more interesting than staying in the stuffy indoors.

Indeed, what is the point of picking up a few beers going to one of these things and discover that an assistant will have to come over to verify that you are old enough to buy them.

I think they should give everyone that manages to use these things a couple of free beers to help overcome the frustration they cause when forced to go shopping in the first place.

I also have one of these - unfortunately it doesn't work for a significant fraction of the year due to biological warfare from trees, flowers and other growing things.

So yes I take some guidance from best before dates but am far from pedantic about it.

get up early saturday morning to take the dogs out then stop at the supermarket on our way home. her in the kitchen goes in for the weekly dog food. she was only in a minute and came back saying that she could not go in because it was card purchases only as the tills were not working. she was told to come back in a hours time which she replied that it would be quicker to go somewhere else now and in the future. surely the few with cash only could have been catered for. giving out change from somewhere else aint rocket science. yes staff are too daft to see stuff. like they shut down the local council office for paying the rates after the staff there encouraged customers to pay on the good old line.

Monkey Hanger, I agree, it is very frustrating when there is a glitch with modern technology - the staff really do not know how to cope, what to do. Without the figures in front of them on the screen so many do not know how to handle good old money - how to count out change, for instance. I find it very sad.

As for paying bills on-line only - what about the people that can't access this method? It might surprise the powers-that-be but not everyone can.

its all very flustrating for me when shop workers in small shops cannot add up or have to use a calculator if they have an older till that does not do their job for em. beating them to the final total is something that always keeps me going. suppose its not heir fault as i hope you lancastrians did mental arithmetic where you had a limited time to work out the cost of 3 and a half lbs. of carrots at 1d an oz. as for paying everything on line and internet banking the fear for many is that they can do it but the conseqences of doing it makes your account less secure. minimal use the better for me.

I think the whole thing is a plan by the major retailers to end up making everyone end up having home deliveries. Make the shopping experience such a pain so that we don't bother. Home deliveries is a dream for them - no costly stores, less staff, perfect stock rotation, they can offload the close to sell by date stuff on you and they get us to pay extra for the "privilege" of not being able to choose our own stuff.

I think a lot of the supermarket chains are seeing how successful Amazon have been by cutting out the 'middle man' by not having any stores and people to staff 'em. A lot of those that were once 24 hour stores have cut back their hours. Am wondering how many who have got used to home deliveries will go back to doing their weekly shop.

I realise it’s been a few days since you posted about the price of those carrots, monkey hanger, but I had to convert the answer to Australian dollars to make the comparison of prices from over there to here and I’m a bit slow these days. Wow! The whole lot only cost just over a dollar – what a bargain. I’d suggest you go and buy a crate full at that price.

Re: What do you find frustrating?

Regarding the Nigerian prince. I wonder if he’s the same one who wrote to me about a large inheritance that I had been left by someone I had never heard of. He had it ready to give me - all he needed were my bank details to deposit the money into. I was so overwhelmed with the generosity of the unknown benefactor I sent word to the prince telling him to forget giving the money to me but to distribute it amongst the poor.

I felt good afterwards when I thought about all those who would benefit from my very generous philanthropic gesture. Strange thing is that I didn’t get a reply or even a ‘thank you’, but that’s the way it goes. On second thoughts I should have told this Nigerian bloke to spend some of it on English lessons – his spelling was atrocious.

yes, follow amazon and be equally successful in paying less tax. think the 24 hour opening is a gimick anyway. paying even a skeleton staff between 10pm and 6am has to be paid for and thats by customers who shop at normal hours. as for home deliveries, i do not want my cold or frozen food stuck in the back of a van for hours before they get to me. cut down on stuff and shop local.

The vans have a chiller compartment for cold and frozen, I've been using home delivery for sometime and find it bloody marvelous, no, self service tills, no, staff looking like a wet weekend and wishing their shift was over and best of all no miserable and awkward customers like me to have to put up with.
Shop local? I would have to switch to hal al bacon for a start, no more pork pies either, the local shops are for people that originated in far away places.

Annoying are clothing labels that scratch and cause itching and discomfort. Not always can they be removed easily. Not sure if it's the thread they use to attach these labels that is the culprit or the label itself.

Re: What do you find frustrating?

Less, regarding home deliveries. While I think it has a lot of merit for people who can't (or don't want to) get to the shops, do you find that you only get the dearest of the item you ask for? Do you get 'specials'? I think the drawback might be that you can't actually shop around for bargains. Maybe you find the benefits are worth not being able to do this.

I can understand what you mean about the ownership of local food shops - it is the same here, though sometimes variety can be the spice of life, literally. You don't need to travel overseas to experience other countries 'gastronomical delights' (???) - we have them all here.

I could be a complete snob and reply with:-

'Good heavens woman, of course I always get the dearest',

however I do have an orifice that is so tight it squeaks when I walk, so yes there are specials, and clubcard specials and if I were to dig deep enough a virtual 'whoops aisle'. (this is created whenever I apply my ten thumbs to the keyboard).

Most of the larger supermarkets had a night crew even back in the day when they shut at 8pm. The only reason they weren't 24 hours back then was because they weren't allowed to. Unfortunately with global demands (people must have their Morrocan Raspberries and Quinoa flown in from far flung shores) local retail just can't compete. Even Booths were struggling not so long back.

Instead of stabbing the lid Shill & risking a slip & cut, use a table knife slipped in the side between jar & lid, a little twist or levering & that usually breaks the vaccum seal.

Hi Shillelagh,
The point of "lids on jars" try this:
Put the lid under the hot water tap for a couple of minutes or so, after the heat has caused the lid to expand, it can then be removed very easily.
Cheers

Why a dig? Could it not just be part of an on going conversation, if I was having a dig it would probably be about something trivial not something as important and sacrosanct as a mans drinking habits.

Jen you are using dangerous means to open your jars....you could end up with blood all over the place.
the handle of a spoon slid under the lid to release the vacuum...but my 'go to' trick is...I have the cuff of an old marigold rubber glove(other brands are available) and i put this over the lid of the jar and twist...it gives better grip and so far...it has worked for me...with no risk of injury.

Hold on though, if a person isn't practical enough to remove a jar lid safely, the chances of them either having a tool for removing oil filters or of being capable of removing an oil filter are, well, not an optimistic outlook on that one is there?

2 things out of my direct control (everything else I can usually suss out for myself).

I ring my GP's Surgery, fight my way through their frustrating Phone System and then left on hold. For ages. Often up to an Hour. Then try getting an appointment with the Consultant Receptionist (who seemingly knows everything).

When she has been defeated by a few a awkward questions, you start getting somewhere (after explaining I'm in a Wheelchair & can't "just pop-in for a Form to fill out").

I get to the Surgery and it's like the Marie Celeste, no phones ringing off the hook, no sounds at all, nobody there. It's quite eerie actually.

To be met not by one of the Guessers in White Costumes, by his Lackey "Practitioners" (Apprentice Guesser?). Who quickly reveals from conversation that she knows nothing about me or my "Complex" Medical situation. A massive waste of time & considerable physical effort.

All this, after the Big Fat Lie on the Phone that they are "Busy". What??? I've seen with my own two Eyes there's no-one there and you strongly appear to be doing nothing.

Next,

Bins. How hard can it be to put them back where you found them????

This really boils my blood. They often do this.

My Bins are in a specific, accessible position for a reason i.e. I'm in a Wheelchair.

Yet my Bins are often emptied and dumped back either on the Street or in a Wildly out of reach place I can't possibly get to (down a step then pushed far away). It feels as though they do it on purpose.

Yeah, it's called a Screwdriver. Just punch it though and twist off the Filter.

Assuming you're not saving them intact.

A Mechanic Friend showed me this years ago. I don't know if Filter attachment has changed, stopping this. I haven't even touched a Filter in Years.

To remove Jar Lids the key is breaking the Vacuum Seal. By slight bending of the edge with
Pliers (or Whatever non-Hammer Tool you have handy like a Screwdriver. Lever tip under Lid on Finger of your gripping Hand), until you hear the Hissing Sound, or by some other means (depends how much damage you can live with).

When I was younger, I used to remove Beer Bottle-Tops with my Teeth simply by easily bending 2 or 3 of the Frills on the Cap until it just fell off.

if you have to puncture the oil filter through with a screwdriver they have been put on too tight in the first place. should be hand tight with a quarter turn only with a wrench.

A slow burning frustration reinforced yet again. All my life I have had a desire to see an eclipse and always it has been prevented either by cloud or my being required to be indoors (with no suitable window). Today, no surprise, so much cloud you cannot even tell which part of the sky the sun is in!
