Coming back, what's happened here?

No posts in days? Apart from Stanley? Like they gave two hoots...

What has happened?

My last sign I was 08-08-2017, always tried to look but Ilost my memory due to I'll health. Tonight I logged in and read old posts.

Some where ****e, some got folk talking.

Read back and you just wouldn't believe the people who made this when you lost Garinda.

Gordon P, maxthecollie,gdm27, Retlaw, loads of folk who became famous and then mocked.

Less its nothing to do with your clique, that should be removed from your description, you set out to a knob from society. You just did it, everyone had your ****ed up trolling ,was clear to everyone else. I clearly envisaged you harming the forum. I was clearly right...

Ban me, it would be funny. When was there last a moderator on here...when I last logged in? I feel sorry for MargP, Cashy, Taddy and dotti(SHES ACROSS THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WORLD) trying to keep this place alive.

And that's a message to anyone reading and lurking. Come back...not you Less. You ruined it:D:D:D:p:hesoff::theband:

and yet you obviously already know the answer, it's all the fault of just one person, I'm glad you got your memory back even if it is a rather biased memory, I'm surprised you didn't blame me for it's loss in the first place, if there is anything I can do to assist in your continued return to full malice such as throwing myself into a burning pit of stakes or slicing my neck from ear to ear with a rusty razor blade please, just let me know.

Re: Coming back, what's happened here?

Yes, Odders, it is a pity that there aren’t the good old debates on this site any more that used to get people expressing their views, agreeing, disagreeing, arguing the point, have to say not always respectful, but definitely interesting. A few controversial subjects would be great and would hopefully stir more people to say their piece. It does come across as a site devoted to dear old Stanley at times but we must keep on keeping on, even though attempts to bring in interesting topics do not always seem to tempt people to have their say. These threads soon go by the wayside, dropped like a lead balloon. Bit frustrating.

I am sorry to hear you have had ill health and hope you have now recovered, but oh! dear me, you have come on a bit strong re Less. As soon as I read your post I knew you would have at least one reply, and that from the man himself. I was right, and as much as I would normally jump in where there is controversy, this time I will keep out of it and leave the pair of you to spar on. Now THAT could be interesting.

By the way, Odders, when born in Lancashire it doesn’t matter where you live in the world you are still a Lancastrian at heart. Well that’s how I feel, and that's why I like to keep in touch.

We always hope that when we post, that it will stimulate some kind of interest.
If it does, then we are pleased…but if it doesn’t then we head back to the drawing board to think of something else.
But, yes it is dispiriting….but it would be even more dispiriting for the forum to fold because of lack of interest.

Well Less, considering it made no difference maybe you should have waited. Nobody bothers anymore here. You use the same old CnP balls. You should have waited, maybe it would have drawn interest to the main forum. Why would I believe you gave me cancer? You can only play God here....

Thanks for the messages Ladies, thanking of my return. Unfortunately it won't be for long. As MargP I have never done social media. I like Accrington and miss it dearly. This was the first place to find out anything.

Nobody's posted in 24hrs, apart from the Stanley faithful. As much as I don't follow football, if anyone asks were I'm from its Accy...and everyone nearly replies "STANLEY, WHO ARE THEY'.

God bless good luck to one of the best local forums ever made. It's impossible now to resurrect, let the Stanley faithful keep you going::hesoff::alright:

Re: Coming back, what's happened here?

Odders, I said I was going to keep out this but anyone who knows me also knows that I can’t keep my lips zipped, or my fingers off the keyboard, if I have something to say. I have already written that I am indeed sorry to hear about your illness. I hope I am wrong when I interpret your posting as meaning you have not recovered. If this is as is then it is very sad, and I am so sorry that this is so. As I said, I hope I have misinterpreted your post.

However, there are four things that I have to respectfully disagree with you about regarding your comments, please do not take them the wrong way. They are my thoughts. Firstly, I seriously doubt that whether playing at being one or not, Less would ever reach the status of God on this site, secondly no half-decent person would ever wish such a cruel illness on a fellow human being, and he is at least half decent (sorry Less, I couldn’t resist that one, but I’m sure you will take it in good spirit).

The third thing is that people do bother here, they do care – I have had personal experiences of how much they do. Finally, the fourth point is that nothing is impossible, so here’s to plenty more of Accy Web, over and above dear old Stanley.

Something else but along the same lines, there must be lots of Accy Web members who have jokes they could share. I feel a bit embarrassed when I see that for a while, apart from a very few other postings, it looks like I am hogging that section (Joke of the Day). I don’t mean to and I keep thinking I won’t post any more ‘funnies’, but as we can all do with some laughter in our lives I can’t help myself. I just wish others would post there, it’s a bit lonely….

do not think its a lack of interest but more of a case of the vast majority who agree with each other on most subjects that are brought up on here. all you do is ending up underlining someone elses opinions who beat you too it.

hard to do jokes nowadays unless you are face to face with someone you know well. someone is bound to be offended for someone else no matter what you say. back in the good old days people rarely minded fun being taken out of them as they actually knew it was the evidence of their existance.

Yes, to some extent that is right, but…..fir myself I know that I always hope that my posts will stimulate some interest…..and I do not care if that interest is dissimilar to my own…..life is boring when no one has a different opinion/point of view.
Dotti has started threads with the hope that it will encourage participation, because a forum is nothing without participants.
Those who comment on the progress of the illustrious football team…..don’t they have any other interests in the forum.
I do not really like football, but on odd occasions I will visit threads to do with football(not that I am much wiser when I leave).

No it isn't, years ago Roy promised that because AccyWeb was his first website he would keep it going and with the Stanley site attached and so popular it's future is secure.

All that said MH, I think you'll find as you mentioned in another post, most folk are along the same lines on here, so I do think the humour will be accepted by those who bother to look rather than someone going off on one. ;)

I’d love to know where the idea AccyWeb was about to disappear came from it’s another of those internet mysteries like mobile phones will be compulsory or there are groups of businessmen all stroking their white pussies and planning to take over the world (why would they want to? All that responsibility of finding cures for global warming and cancerous diseases!)

Re: Coming back, what's happened here?

Well, don’t they say ‘use it, or lose it’?
And if no one is posting to threads then why would it continue….yes….there is the football section, but football is seasonal.

And Less, you sound ever so patronising….but then nothing new there.

dotti34 05-11-2021 21:20

Re: Coming back, what's happened here?

Cashy it is great that people support their local clubs, in whatever sport this may be, but sometimes there are as many as eight threads alive on this site and not one of them on any other subject but dear old Stanley. I know you will appreciate that this is frustrating for those who are not football inclined and want to ‘talk’ about other things – whether trivial or world affairs.

It doesn’t seem long since many varied subjects were discussed, debated, and even if people agreed about them it didn’t matter as it is good to know what others think. During the time I am thinking about I don’t remember many postings about football – if any were there they would have taken their place with the other subjects and not overtaken them.

For some reason many of the regular contributors seem to have disappeared, apart from a few of the faithfuls – and even if they are now sharing their comments on other sites instead it is disappointing that they can’t also share them on this one as well.

Yes, Less….that is because on this forum we are allowed to have different opinions.
Sometimes you are patronising, sometimes you are carmudgeonly, sometimes you are funny……

but these are MY opinions only…..and you neither need to like them or subscribe to them…..you are able to have your own opinions….

Re: Coming back, what's happened here?

Odders, the reason why the site has gone quiet is, as we all know, because a number of people who were regular contributors unfortunately have stopped posting for some reason or other, but that is their prerogative. Sadly a number of the regular ones are no longer with us, and are greatly missed.

It seems that because of health problems you have been unable to participate for a number of years, but now that you have joined in the banter again you should keep this up. I'm sure you have opinions on a lot of subjects, just like most of us do, so why not share them on this site.

Margaret Pilkington 07-11-2021 07:51

Re: Coming back, what's happened here?

Odders it is quiet because there is little to comment on if you are not an avid football fan.

I suppose that to some degree that is our fault too, for not posting stuff that is of interest.

But, if you try to post stuff that you think will get a response and it flies like a dead budgie…..well, it is inevitable that you lose heart and stop trying to engage.(that is just how I see it anyway)

Many of the regulars that used Accyweb migrated to Facebook and the part of it that is Hyndburn Chat….of course that is their choice…..and Accyweb seems not to be getting new members who post.
Maybe it no longer appeals because there is nothing to see here.

When my lad was about 4 I decided to grow some tomato's in the back yard, bought a grow bag planted the seeds and set up a plastic cloche around the infant plants.
Tended it every day but only one plant grew, nurtured it gave it all the liquid compost it could ever need it was growing strong. Then one afternoon my son ran into the house crying, 'Dad, Dad, the tomato bit me' he screamed, I looked at his arm and there was a red rash, I left him in the care of his Mum and went to investigate.

When I looked closely, I found I had been caring for a nettle all this time.

Re: Coming back, what's happened here?

Oh Less….that made me smile.
Not a natural gardener then?
When I worked on C2 at QPH….the bathroom block on that ward was a lean to add on with a partial glass roof.
In the summer it was just like a greenhouse…..so much so that we grew some very tasty tomatoes in pots on the window ledges in there.
We would go and cut them off as we needed them and often had lovely tomatoes on toast.
Oh yes and the seeds were from a squashed tomato that one of the staff had brought in to make up her salad lunch..

Oh what a cracker, please keep it up Less, Although I must admit that Tomato's and nettles seem to love being room mates, the number of times that I have come back from my allotment and had to splash vinegar all over my hands in order to nuetralise (spelt wrong) the sting is uncountable. As I've mentioned before I'm on a par with Dotti. I do tremendous weeds with no effort at all & under my feeding tables/hangers for the birds there is a veritable cornucopia of green stuff growing, no idea whatsoever as to what it is, but it's growing without any interference from me. :D

Margaret Pilkington 08-11-2021 18:50

Re: Coming back, what's happened here?

I am very poor at growing green things…..but I was given a Kolanchoe plant last Christmas….it is still surviving my mistreatment….I was given another one around June….this too seems to be thriving on lack of water and has an abundance of pink flowers on it….so I am reviewing my skills in this area.
Though I do not think I am up to coping with an allotment.

Yes Marge, when I started clearing the allotment in 2016 it was full of nettles, docks, and swathes of couch grass but finally after five years it is now (almost) weed free, so if I do get the occasional nettle rash nowadays the antidote, ie the dock leaves are no longer available to me, maybe I should have left the odd dock plant but it is now a little too late, If I do manage to spot one I shall nurture it like a flower. Thanks for mentioning it, it is something tha I had not thought of.

Why not start a gardening thread where members can ask your advice about when to plant, what to plant, how to care for their garden, general gardening talk, that sort of thing. Or maybe once a question is asked then others might be able to make suggestions also to answer the question. I can’t see a gardening section already on the site. I stand corrected if there is. I think it is worth a try.

Over in the Community/Social groups section Mick used to do a gardening club every year, Taddy could start it up again:-
http://www.accringtonweb.com/forum/groups/

Perhaps call it 'Mick's memorial gardening club'?

Sorry Dotti and Less, the names Taddy not Titchmarsh, there is a big difference between doing what one has learnt by watching and learning from older countryside people, i.e. Gardening, Rabbiting, ferreting, fishing etc and teaching or putting across to others what is stored in the old grey matter between the ears; as the grey matter is now approaching 75 years of age it becomes increasingly harder to extract information from it, or as Mrs Taddy keeps telling me, "you are losing your memory", to which I always reply, I am not losing it but there are 75 years of recollections in there which take longer to extract than someone who has only 30 or 40 years to remember. Never the less, (Less),(Dotti), I shall keep it in mind, as long as I can remember that is.

While appreciate what you are saying Taddy…..those years of watching old gardeners were valuable to you….you got hints, tips advice from those who had the life experience……they probably got it the hard way…by doing it wrong first.

I am sure that you are a mine of useful information about how to do things….how to grow things…..and how to solve problems.
So you sell yourself short….and memory about doin* things is different from remembering dates, or technical stuff.
So I think you would have a head start.

Cashy, you might say your memory is not what it used to be but I bet you can still remember those really important milestones in your life. You know the ones - where and when you had your first pint, the first girl you dated (and possibly where you went), and that most important event – the first time you watched Accrington Stanley. Come on, Cashy – I bet you remember those occasions.

its actually surprising things you can remember from the far distant past. even those with health problems can remember something that happened pre school days but not what they had for dinner yesterday. always beware of the person who seems to remember stuff from the past. they may not have a better memory than you but are better at research.

Yes Odders you are right.
Today is all we can be certain of.
I am glad that you are enjoying being back…and it seems like this thread did encourage a few more people to post….for which, we have to be glad.
I hope you(and a few others) do keep posting because I like reading what others post.

Must admit you got me there I’d thought of many names for taddy but a gimmer?
Had to look it up, still none the wiser, how is he a sheep between his first and second cut?

It is a slang name for an oldie...not sure that it is in common use, neither is it politically correct.
So there you are Less...Again Accyweb has educated us both...I did not know it was the name for a two toothed Ewe.

NOT politically correct? Are you trying to bring the site to shame?
I hope the mods correct this transgression immediately!

Or

Maybe we could just say let it be?

Cue the song…

A (Gimmer) was/is a female sheep (Ewe), that has not yet been with a (Tup), (Ram); I.E a virgin Ewe.

That is the dictionary definition Taddy...mine is the colloquial or slang use of this word.

I do not know who in our family coined the word, but it was always used for elderly, infirm and a bit gormless oldies.

[QUOTE=Margaret Pilkington;1259903]No…Taddy…..I said you were acting like one.

An Italian workmate of mine from years ago who sadly died only last Saturday used to have a comment for such situations, he would say, "in an english/italian accent, "Mike el, is a same differencia". You may even have met him, he lived for years in Hygiene Place in Clayton which is on the other side of the canal from where you are. At the time in the 1980s, Giovani, (if that is spelt right) used to look after the three Lancashire boilers on days, where as I did the same job on nights at OXO in Great Harwood.
We only ever met up on Saturday mornings on overtime but what a commical man and good workmate. Rest easy Giovani, you taught me a lot.
