Fireworks
Do not know what its been like this year over the hill but over this way last night was the 4th night in a row we have had to suffer the reinactment of the battle of stalingrad. Not a killjoy for those who enjoy them but surely its remember remember the 5th of november and not days before and after the event. Enough is enough for me and surely something needs doing for the future. However when profits are being made out of their sales its not time to hold my breath.

Re: Fireworks
It has been much the same here…and the run up to Bonfire week has been punctuated with bangers most nights.
What is it that makes these bombs like banger attractive? They scare the bejesus out of me. |
Re: Fireworks
i think the government should stop them making fireworks so loud? the noise these days is ridiculous, most kids love fireworks and i aint one who says ban em but just use common sense,and stop selling them after nov 5th, not perfect i know but it will help;

I read an article in the daily mail the other day where a question had been put to ten and eleven year old school children, the question being "what is Guy Foulks remembered for, some answered, "he was the maker of fireworks" others thought that he invented the forks that we use to eat with, not one had ever been taught the real reason for "gunpowder, treason and plot".What the hell are our so called teachers, tutors, lecturers putting in to our childrens brains, Rant over, glass empty, time for another Hobgoblin. |
Re: Fireworks
Taddy they are teaching them woke topics….climate change etc.
But these children will still want to watch fireworks (not sure hope much they affect our carbon footprint….but you can bet it will be adversely)…..they will also not be taught that their devices (which use Lithium batteries) are not a bit green…….that children as young as seven will be excavating the chemicals that power these things…..and that for every KG of these chemicals use up half a million gallons of water…..and these chemicals are in places where water is at a premium. But that is an inconvenient truth when a sixteen year old wants to take a selfie…or post on Instagram….. They do not know this information, but they will still sing from St Greta’s eco powered hymn sheet and wag school every Friday….but only as a protest against climate change….not because they really want to skip school. |

Had 2 complete tools at the back of mine last night . One starts, next man goes bigger.Started around 10ish, by 12bells I thought they had ran out. Oh no 3.20 someone launches a scud missile. Fireworks for general public should be limited to the week either side of Nov 5th. They're more a nuisance today than entertainment. I'm not for a ban, better regulation and responsibility.

I have not seen a GP since about 2018 after my surgery by Mr Mc Allister. It has been pretty damn impossible to see anyone. My other half had problems with earache….had it on and off for about two months. Did not resolve with home remedies or over the counter stuff. I rang for an appointment…..yes I got a telephone appointment, but not with a doctor….and tell me, how do you determine if a problem is a build up of wax or something more serious on a telephone consultation? I am glad that I have no long term health issues because even those who do are struggling to get the usual care. |
Re: Fireworks
My question is this - how can people afford to buy all those fireworks? Are these the same people that cry 'poor' at the drop of a hat I wonder.

I also wear hearing aids, have done for 20 years or so, they are ideal for when Mrs Taddy attempts to give me earache whilst I am trying to;) watch a rugby union match on t.v.;);) |
Re: Fireworks
My other half is selectively deaf…he doesn’t hear what I say to him…he needs the TV turned up loud…but he can hear a toffee being unwrapped at a hundred paces….how does that work?

Blokes & Dogs Tads, tell a hound to get over here as we're off out in the rain, or just off the sofa/seat/bed, nothing, deaf as a post. Yet go into the kitchen & open "their" cupboards/fridge & they're near on running you over & that close you'd think you had a pork chop hangin' out your pocket. |
Re: Fireworks
I hate the bloody fireworks.
I had to take a week off work so I can walk the dogs earlier (while it is still light) and one of them will not go out in the evenings except when she is crossing her legs and then it's only a quick one. The only saving grace this year has been the rain, I look forward to it every oct - jan. |

Re: Fireworks
Yes…I have to admit that I also hope for a wet and windy Bonfire month…because these days that is how long the fireworks seem to last….added to that we live close to the Dunkenhalgh…..so when there is a big party for a wedding, birthday etc…I can guarantee there will be fireworks…often after 11pm.
I do not mind those the just Whoosh…but what in heavens name is the attraction of bangers that sound like bombs going off. I think that to buy fireworks you should have to do a pyrotechnics course, have a licence renewable each year at a cost and prove that you know how to handle these things. And all fireworks should cease at 11pm. |

I can thoroughly agree with that, I've always been fine & had no problems despite the tours I was involved in. What always struck me, especially living here in Germany was the amount of fireworks & especially "Bangers" that were set off for New year, I often wondered & still do how some of the older folk feel on new years eve. Bramsche is 14km from Osnabrück a major Garrison town in the days of Adolf (also later when the Brits were stationed here), added to that the metalworks, railyards & industry, plus the 3 Airfields, Achmer, Hesepe & Vorden took a very heavy toll in bombings from the RAF & USAF. I'm pretty sure the yearly carousing & festivities on the 31st would most certainly bring back some unpleasant memories for some of these folk. |
Re: Fireworks
Well spoken Dave, it must be the same for anyone still alive who had to suffer the nightly bombing raids during the 1940s.

Re: Fireworks
In the 90's I worked with a bloke whose brother owned a firework company that put on organised displays. Mark, the guy I worked with, had a licence to be responsible for displays so he could help his brother out around November 5th and the amount of stuff he had to know to keep it was incredible. Now, I suspect those same powerful fireworks can just be bought over the counter by any idiot who hasn't got a clue what they're doing. Our oldest cat had a wonderful year this year because she's gone deaf and hadn't got a clue what was going on so just slept peacefully through it.

I also seem to remember that if Nov' 5th fell on a Sunday the 'celebrations' would be held on the Saturday.

Me neither

Re: Fireworks
As far as I remember .bonfire night was only ever held on the fifth of November…it was never a moveable feast.

Re: Fireworks
I think the bommy on Saturday was more of an economic/social thing, especially when the Pubs would put a display on. As Kids I recall we'd take it in turns amongst the neighbours as to who'd host the bommy that year & all the Mums would do something to take, butties, pies, sossy rolls Treacle toffe etc (all home made mind).
The Dads would organize the "Party 7's" a modest packet or two of fireworks, (weren't going to waste good Beer tokens on rockets), & us kids would get some sparklers, then as the fire burnt down & turned to embers we'd stuff spuds & Chezzies in tinfoil around the edges. Happy days & the joy of kidhood! :o |

Re: Fireworks
Yeah bommy night was 5th whatever the day. Plate meat and spud pie, red cabbage, separate pastry on loose broth, suping Bovril, fireworks and treacle toffee.... and them black peas and vinegar. Kids know zip, it was fun not a biggest bang, you wanted it still burning in the morning:dflam:
|
Re: Fireworks
Treacle toffee, we didn’t have Bovril….we had dandelion and burdock(stantons…stone bottles)
Sarsaparilla and home made ginger beer to drink(I am sure that stuff was alcoholic because our lads used to go daft after drinking it)….a great big Jacobs join….Mrs Flynn made the best Parkin ever. And the fireworks were more for wonder than for scary……bangers didn’t burst your ear drums. |
Re: Fireworks
We weren't allowed to have a bonfire or fireworks on a Sunday. Can't remember whether we had them Saturday or Monday instead.

[QUOTE=Margaret Pilkington;1259443]Treacle toffee, we didn’t have Bovril….we had dandelion and burdock(stantons…stone bottles)
Were Stantons an accrington firm as i remember an accrington firm delivering over into yorkshire in the early 60,s selling various pop in stone bottles out of a van. Remember the accrington connection but not the firms name. it was a novalty as we had not seen the like before. |
Re: Fireworks
Just a little side note here folks, the Germans & lots of European countries tend to celebrate New Years with a major blow out & lots of fireworks. This year in Germany the Govt & the Lander have decided there is to be a ban on the sale of said items so as not to overload the health system with additional injuries clogging up the Ozzys on top of the covid carry on (and to also reduce pollution levels).
If folk have some lying around from a previous year they can fire them off, but the shops will not be selling them, this is now being challenged by the firms in Germany who make fireworks because such an action will be losing them a vast amount of their yearly turnover. Furthermore, it will mean folk sneaking over borders to buy legal & illegal products from neighbouring countries. Seems that politicoes, regardless of their nationality or leanings really don't do joined up thinking & the assessment of cause & reaction. |

We awaited Friday night with anticipation.
That was the evening they delivered to Marsden Street. We waited at the bottom of Riley’s Hill with our two stone bottles…..we mostly got sarsaparilla and dandelion and burdock…but sometimes ginger beer. It was rationed at our house…because it was a luxury. Can you imagine explaining a glass of pop being a luxury to the kids of today? |
