That at least guarantees he certainly wasn't froggish, I still reckon he was an Englishman though, but was probably hired on by a labour council, sort of worked for 5 days (lets face it looking at the state of the world, so screwed up it can only be labours doing!), double time on the 6th & was pished on the 7th so unable to work. ;)

:o

I don't often drink whisky, but just on a whim, I bought a bottle for christmas, a single malt seeing this post I thought why not? So I opened it early, all the whiskies I have enjoyed I would have a sniff at and there would be a niff of 'come on in the flavour is lovely', this one, when I breathed in the fumes, took me back to when I was about six full of the flu and finding it hard to breathe, a medicine supposed to do you good but was so awful even though your parents were suffering just as badly they didn't take it.

I finally took a swallow, it tasted just like that medicine, the whole of the bottle has gone straight down the drain, how can people sell such crap on the open market?

If you stick to the Rolls Royce of Highland Malts, "The Macallan" and the best from the Emerald Isle, Tullamore Dew", then you wont go far wrong but you will need a big cheque to pay for the big licks.
I tend to sample the odd one or two glasses in between a bottle or three of Hobgoblin, (but only at Christmas), that way they last a bit longer.

Not bad choices there Tadmeister, but the "Mac" has gotten to big for its boots & is asking far to high a price for a reasonable Dram, I'd suggest the Glen Grant, Dalwhinnie 15 (Winters Gold is worth a look too) or even Glendronach for a reasonably priced drop from Scottyland.

As to the Oirish, the Jameson as advocated by "My father Dear" & from a real live Leprechaun I once met at a Whisky festival, "Oi wuden drink dat shoite, a proper drink is Redbreast!" I was reliably informed so, take that on board, if you will or not as the case may be. :D

agree if its the scotch variaty you are talking about. do not mind the irish versions as they taste a bit softer. garlic, sprouts and scotch whisky must have all been invented in some chemical lab, but i suppose its each to their own.

No….whisky is definitely a punishment…or maybe at best…nasty medicine.
Sprouts can be improved by cooking them to death…mashing them with pepper and some good streaky bacon.
Not too sure about garlic…but it does kill fleas.

No….son…it is true.
Years ago the Italians who ran flea circuses found that if they are anything with garlic in it, when they put the fleas on their arms to feed….they died very soon after.
But if you haven’t got fleas you can eat as much as you like…you can have my share too…it is not my favourite.

See! Sprouts is evil! If Whisky be the Devils widdle, Sprouts must be right up alongside it as the Devils hors d'oeuvre (the fact that that is a froggit word just doubles down on my conviction). :D

Marge, I grow up to 30 sprout plants every year on my allotment but only because Hazel loves them; when you mention "can you really have sprouts that are rare", then yes you can, I can not stand them cooked but I do eat them uncooked which is as rare as you can have them. Sprouts are only a variety of Cabbage that has multiple heads, (sprouts), if eated raw they simply taste like a solid/ ball headed Cabbage, my mates reckon that I have lost my marbles eating them raw but every one to their own.

go to some restaurants nowadays and everything seems uncooked for me. the main reason we both stay clear of eating out nowadays apart from in little cafes where things are cooked to our taste. i do not want quarter cooked veg or meat that is half raw, just sick of arguments with waiters and sending stuff back for them to finish the cooking.

I most certainly am my dear Tadmeister, the "Froggit" I was referring to was of course the phrase "hors d'oeuvre", which of course you know means a small savoury / starter / nibble

Furthermore to your question of Brussels being in France, for a short period under Napoleon the 1st it was (see below), that was until "Nosey" (Arthur Wellesly 1st Duke of Wellington) & his forces showed "Boney" his own hoop at Quatre Bras (Belgium) then on the 18th June 1815 at Waterloo. Brussels then became a part of the "United Kingdom of the Netherlands" ;)

Following the Brabant Revolution (1789–90) against the government of Holy Roman emperor Joseph II, the French republican armies made their appearance, and the Belgian principalities were annexed to France. During the Napoleonic era, Brussels was reduced to the rank of chief town of the French département of the Dyle, losing in addition all authority over its satellite villages. (See French revolutionary and Napoleonic wars.)

The above paragraph was taken from Britannica.com, although I did have a broad idea of the military implications & power struggles in europe at this time.

Every day a schoolday on here mate, we're never to old to learn something new or at least review what we already thought we knew. :)
