People Born in the 1940's
People born in the 1940's have lived in 9 decades, 2 centuries and 2 millenniums.
We had the best music. We had the fastest cars. We went dancing almost every Saturday night. We are not even that old. And yet we are just that cool. Keep on Rockin' -Joe |
Re: People Born in the 1940's
MoreJoe, I’m a bit disappointed that your thread hasn’t evoked memories from other 1940’s children. I always find it interesting to read of what people remember. I go back further than you, to those born in the 1930’s, and believe you me we knew how to enjoy ourselves also. Dancing to good music, Big Bands, and the like - not just on Saturdays though. It was any day there was a dance on. Ballroom, Be-Bop, Rock and Roll, any and every sort. Didn’t matter if we had to travel miles to get to it.
Not sure about fast cars, don’t think there were many of them around, but although I am that old according to my birth certificate, I do still try to keep on rocking and rolling, well maybe not so much in a physical sense these days, but any which way I can. |

Well Dotti, like an old song goes I was mostly "Working for the Weekend".
I sometimes use Google Maps to go looking at the old fun places around the world, even the famous and the semi-famous. It saddens me how many have closed and gone. The pandemic was the final nail for many of them. I am afraid we will not see their like again and our grandchildren may not understand or believe how they were. -Joe |
Re: People Born in the 1940's
Hi MoreJoe,
Agree entirely with you. I was born in 1943 and remember vividly dancing at various places late fifties such as - Joe Morts - Knowlmere street - Con Club etc. As you say, it was only on Saturdays, apart from Christmas and New year when they fell during the week. We would also go for the odd pint or two (under age) in the Royal Oak & New Brewery. Cheers |
Re: People Born in the 1940's
I was born late in the Forties….while I would have liked to go to dances at Knowlmere St and Joe Morts, my mother thought that the girls who went to these places were ‘no better than they ought to be’…so I was thwarted at every turn.
Anyway I couldn’t dance for toffee. I did get to go to Spring Hill Methodist church hall on a Saturday night, four pence to go in and a glass of Kia Ora and a couple of biscuits…..the boys sat against one wall…the girls against the other….I can’t recall seeing many boys actually dancing. The girls danced in a circle and it was all over by nine pm. I was accompanied home by my friend and her father….so not a chance for any romantic attachment. As for fast cars…..none of those either….but music…yes definitely the very best music played on the little Danette as loud as it would go. |
Re: People Born in the 1940's
I have only just realized that I got ripped of every Saturday night 'cause I got charged 6d at Spring Hill church hall while you, Margaret were getting in for 4d.

Re: People Born in the 1940's
It was four pence when we first started going, but went up to sixpence….so you were not getting ripped off…it was pretty lame anyway…it should have been free.
