I know it's illegal for under 18s to drink alcohol in a pub but is it the same in the privacy of one's own home if given said alcohol by one's parent? I've known it happen - particularly at Christmas.

Re: alcohol

Actually Willow, you can buy wine with a meal in a restaurant from IIRC 14. It is illegal to purchase alcohol from a pub or off-licence but it is not illegal to drink it in a private residence.

Re: alcohol

Thanks for clarifying that Entwisi. I didn't know about the wine in a restaurant but then again I and my children don't drink alcohol at all so it wouldn't come up.

As far as I'm aware People over the age of 14 are allowed to buy either beers or ciders to accompany a meal; wines and spirits are off the menu though.. I think.

Wez, I used to work in the trade and it was definately wine. IIRC Cider(and perry) claasifies as wine as well. Beer was not allowed.

What is IIRC?

Re: alcohol

My understanding is as follows

1) It is legal for someone at the age of 16 to purchase and consume beer or cider to go with a meal, in a restaurant or in a pub which has a designated area for eating.

2) The minimum legal age for consumption of alcohol at home is 4 (Yes, Four)

3) Because of 2), above, there is some confusion about the legality of children drinking in a pub beer garden.

Here's a question:

Which is the only well known spirit, which by law does not have to be served in a standard measure?

I'll hazard a guess at gin because I've never heard of a double gin like a double brandy or double whiskey.

Re: alcohol

I take it the police in Accy have never heard of undercover cops then?

Acrylic-bob 18-01-2005 11:06

Re: alcohol

No Accy Police are usually to be found skulking around motorways or layby's hoping to spot speeding motorists, then they can use the flashing lights and the siren that goes whooo-whoo.

Tealeaf 18-01-2005 11:08

I thought sirens went "we-ow we-ow"?

I know most of us are Grown ups but didnt we all attempt the under age drinking? Ossy was a hot spot,:) I played for the Tinker and Budget football team at 15 and we all went back after for a couple of jars after the game, and of course the discos in the seventies, Barley wine......... wow could that get you drunk. So they are only doing what we did only they have no where to go except the park.

I was sneaking in the pub well under age and getting larger, you just had to know the right pubs and I bet nothing as changed much since then! If you get caught thats hard cheese,my brothers have both been barmen and they say girls are harder to spot under age drinking than lads cos they can look much older, they tend to ask for cards now,it's part of growing up and most of us have done it!
