George Harrison and Accrington
Good afternoon, I chose this thread because it appears to get the most traffic!
I am looking for a Reader's Digest article. It was probably written in the 1980s or 1990s, and it was by George Harrison or about him. Maybe even the late 1970s. I had the copy of the magazine for years, but it got lost in my many moves. It could not have been any later than year 2000 - or at least that's what I think. I moved to Mexico in 2001. Specifically the article mentioned that when the Beatles became immensely popular in 1963/1964. they still had contracts to fulfill in working men's clubs on weekends in places like ACCRINGTON (and I think another town was mentioned). I do not have the means to check in libraries here in Mexico, and I doubt that they would have, say, the Reader's Guide in English. I cannot find anything online. I thought that the article might have been a shortened version of a book, maybe even written by Harrison - the kind of shortened version the Reader's Digest published. The New York Public Library sent me this, but this old man's eyes and fingers can't quite handle it https://archive.org/details/pub_readers-digest Anybody there remember anything about this article? Thanks very much! |
Re: George Harrison and Accrington
Here is a bit of trivia for you Steerforth, and though it doesn’t provide the help you are after it does tell you which that other town in Lancashire you made mention of was. On the Internet there is an article about the Imperial Ballroom at Nelson in Lancashire, better known as The Imp. It states that on 11th May 1963 the Beatles performed there and it was their first concert since 27th April. Apparently they had been on holiday and had returned to Liverpool on 9th May 1963.
About 2,000 teenagers saw them play and some had to be held back by bouncers at the foot of the stage. By the way, a lot of famous people performed at The Imp. Sadly it burned down in 1976. |
Re: George Harrison and Accrington
The Beatles played at King Georges Hall in Blackburn and at the Co-op Hall in Darwen.
Not that I remember either of these events. I only know this because I googled it. I went to see the Beatles in Blackpool in 1963 (I think) I went with my best friend at the time and these tickers were her birthday present from her mum and dad. And I know that this is no help at all and it doesn’t answer your question. |
