Information on your area
Take a look at www.upmystreet.com put in your post code then have a look at the Acorn profile link to see a generalised view of information people see about the area you live, its interesting if not a little disturbing!!

Re: Information on your area
People in my area do not own cars and prefer to travel by public transport. So how come we can never get a parking place outside the house? Or is it because everyone just parks their car and then travels on public transport.
We also shop at Kwik Save (funny that because I hardly ever go in there so it must be the neighbours) and buy clothes from Burton and Top Shop. Oh really? There's also apparently a large number of students in shared rented accommodation. Wherever they are they must be hiding. Who compiles this nonsense? |
Re: Information on your area
HBC, shops were you buy things, everybody basically that you come into contact with. If you buy a new TV, the shop will sell your name to this company for roughly £8.50 per name so that they can collect all this information or when you order sky they do they same.

Re: Information on your area
So how come it is so inaccurate?

Re: Information on your area
Sorry Tinkerbelle, but they are WAY out with their info! I entered my old address, a quiet village in Bedfordshire and these were a few of the gems it came up with:
Family Income-Low Ex council houses are currently selling for around £160-000 - £200.000 in the village and there is NO properties under £100.000 so much for low incomes:rolleyes: Interest in current affairs-Low Considering the number of Doctors, Bank Managers and Company owners in the village, that stat could be just a tad out:rofl38: Cable TV over average for this group There IS NO cable TV in the village at all, They have been promising to lay the cables for over a decade but never got round to it so instead, over 90% of households have Sky.....'ang on a mo, they say that Satallite TV is medium:confused:   Well, the site was good for a laugh:s_gupjump :s_gupjump |
Re: Information on your area
Aside from all the previous comments, with which I happen to agree, it is obviously a commercial site, & slanted accordingly. When looking at the local businesses listed, I remember the days when salespeople tried to get me to advertise on a leaflet produced on behalf of the local estate agent, & wonder if this is the modern day equivalent?
I wonder how much it has cost these guys? Do I really want some website to tell me that Frank Jeffers is 100yds away, or Greengates is 300yds away? Or Homebase is a little bit further? Do we really need to tap into 'tinternet to find these people? What happened to good old 'word of mouth'? Does no-one ask their friends, colleagues etc for the name of a good tradesman/company these days? Having viewed, more than used, this forum over the last few months, I would welcome it if someone more computer literate than myself would start a thread extolling the virtues of our local tradesmen. And also, of course, warning us of the 'cowboys'. Perhaps we'd be surprised that we have more 'Good 'un's ' than the cowboys highlighted in the local press!! Sorry if I may have gone a little 'off topic' , please forgive my ranting!! |
