Think its the same with all ISP's if you upgrade, they call it an "ADMIN" charge.
The one I'm with has 512k connection with a 1G cap @ £14.99,
and have just added a1MB connection with a 1G cap @ £14.99,
And yep to change over incures an "ADMIN" charge, so I will stick with my 512 connection.

There is another way of looking at this. When BT lifted the distance limit on BB, they did'nt do anything to their network, and most ISP's jumped on the bandwaggon with new products, like the cheaper 1&2M connections, I know several people that upgraded and seem to have had nothing but problems since. So upgrading may cause you problems depending just how far away you are from the local T. exchange.

yeah we did it seems ok.customer services could be better.the modem they send you does the job for basics.but we upgraded again for one with ethernet connections for on line gaming with ps2 cost an extra £70 but seems worth it.

Bt have a special offer on at the moment you can upgrade to Anytime+ for no extra charge and you get full broadband access until May for £15:99......then if you want you can go back to Anytime + which is limited access broadband......3 times faster than dial up. Bt aren't daft though they know that once you have experienced full speed broadband you won't want anything slower so they've got you.

Broadband makes such a big difference.

The pages on this forum probably take awhile to load up, but get bb and you will wonder how you ever managed without it.

A bit like a washing machine, really!

Hi Margaret, I think the term is UP to 3 times faster than dial up, that would be 150k not very good, had some of that and it caused me no end of problems. Most BB products are advertised that way. UP to 5 x faster, UP to 10 x faster, but they are all contended at 50:1, so the speed you actualy get sometimes is not what you think. Check out this link the ADSL guide, gives you a list of all the ISP's that provide a "domestic" BB service.
http://www.adslguide.org.uk/ it's well worth having a look before you take the plunge.
Example i'm on a 512k connection, download speeds are usually about 56/60kb/ps which is quicker than dial up. On the ADSL guide there is a speed checker, may be worth having a look, and testing your download speed on your normal dial up connection.

Hi
What connection are you on, and who with

TBH I use dial up during the day at work and this forum isn't too bad for speed of loading. However I do 'help' it slightly by running a caching proxy server. You can also add the URL to your host file so that it doesn't waste time doing DNS lookups. One of the biggest improvements in speed is by making sure you use a lightweight browser. IE is dog slow compared with some, Firefox is a lot quicker at rendering the pages. If I am after ultimate speed however I use a lightning quick browser called Dillo(sorry, stable version not available for Windows as yet). It literally takes a quarter of the time to render the same page. OK it doesn't have lots of wizzy bang features but I use it where speed is of an essence.

So help things along where you can.

I'm only on a 256 connection, but my ISP have written to me to advise that they are upgrading to 512 free of charge at the end of March.

I am with Tiscali, unfortunately.

They are almost as incompetent as NTL; I have never ever received a correct bill from them, and until I do I think I am stuck with them, as I doubt they will bother to correct anything if I leave.

At £20 per month I can't complain too much, but I would like to move to an ISP with a Customer Service department that isn't based in India that works solely from a script.

I would also like them to answer emails and letters. This is something that I am yet to experience with Tiscali.

In essence, they are ****e
