Woolworth and M&S etc are now where those sunken gardens used to be.
I remember singing that Odeon club song and "following the bouncing ball" aaah happy days. :) |
Re: Odeon Cinema Accrington
"Good citizens when we grow up,
And champions of the free!" I think that they should make this song compulsory in all of the borough's schools. That and the introduction of public flogging for minor offences. I am getting to the far end with all this namby-pamby "can't be named for legal reasons" Horse Sh*t! I think that juvenile delinquents should be made to stand in front of the Market Hall for the whole day on a Saturday with a placard of their misdeeds hung around their necks. Can you imagine it? being forced to stand there with a sign around your neck which read something like "I was bored. so I beat up and robbed a pensioner" I wonder what the response of shoppers would be? |
Re: Odeon Cinema Accrington
thanks for that K.S.H. we have been trying to think of them for ages. Yes they were happy days and wasn't broadway beautiful.

Re: Odeon Cinema Accrington
Great photographs, good to see the coppice without all the trees.
|
Re: Odeon Cinema Accrington
why cant our new local cinema bring back the saturday club and make it affordable for all the kids. it would utilise the cinema and give the youngsters an interest, and, maybe they could be taught the song, possibly making them think about becoming good citizens and champions of the free.

Re: Odeon Cinema Accrington
When did the flicks in the town centre close?
I remember that Monday night was half price night, in the early eighties. One Tuesday morning, half of Moorhead were wandering round uttering the phrase, "He's not the messiah. He's a very naughty boy!" 'cos it seemed that half of the schol was crammed in there to watch The Life of Brian. :D |
Re: Odeon Cinema Accrington
Sparky........... " I'll have 3 pointed stones..........and a bag of gravel for the kid " :)
|
Re: Odeon Cinema Accrington
I think it closed down about 1988-89 officially b4 knocked down, if u know when Batman was released at cinema then that was the last month, i remeber going cos i knew it was gonna be demolished shortly

What you quote there is without doubt the funniest scene from the film. The part that John Cleese plays as the officious Stoning Officer was pure class. |
Re: Odeon Cinema Accrington
The door on the left side of the cinema led upstairs to the PICKWICK restaurant which i think opened after the cinema closed. I remember going in there one night with some friends, the waitress put a gravy boat at the end of the table after she had served our steaks i poured everyone some gravy out only to discover that the gravy boat contained vineger, the lighting was very subdued. When we complained we were told that if you had been regulars you would have known we always serve vineger in a gravy boat. We asked for a refund for our spoiled meal and were escorted off the premises by a police man with a very large dog. (WE DID NOT BECOME REGULARS) instead we finished our nights with a meal in the cafe at Barnes street chippy and it was very good.

|
Re: Odeon Cinema Accrington
I remember it well......aaah. And the sunken gardens......well before woolies and M&S were built on the site........the Odeon that I remember was well before the Pickwick days. There were quite a few picture places..... let me think. Ritz, Prince's, Empire, Palace, Kings Hall(otherwise known as the bug hut)......I'm sure if I have missed any you'll remind me.

Re: Odeon Cinema Accrington
Well Pam, don't know about you..... but the Saturday club was the highlight of my week.....must've sung that ditty hundreds of times.
If I was ever to be punished for anything it was by not being allowed to go to the Saturday Club! |
Re: Odeon Cinema Accrington

Re: Odeon Cinema Accrington
Hello there
I'm new to this site and was delighted to see the pictures of the old Odeon looking just like I remember it. I used to catch the 46 (I think) Blackburn bus at a stop next to the gardens, to go home to West End, a long time ago. I have relatives still living in Blackburn but none left in Accrington or Oswaldtwistle now so I haven't seen Accrington for at least 10 years. I had no idea that Woolworths had "moved". The pictures bring back many memories. |
Re: Odeon Cinema Accrington
Hi West Ender, yes that would have been a 46 bus. The number 9 did the same route but it didn't stop at all the stops. I remember catching the Huncoat bus on Broadway too.
|
Re: Odeon Cinema Accrington
That would be when Broadway had a definite function.......I could happily see it go back to that. I'm sure it would regenerate the centre a bit.
|
Re: Odeon Cinema Accrington
The Blackburn bus stop was on Union Street, did the Huncoat bus stop leave from
St,James Steet, outside the libary, one used to go up Avenue Parade, and the other up Burnley Road. |
Re: Odeon Cinema Accrington
I only ever remember catching the Huncoat bus in Broadway. It was a loooooong time ago.
Do you remember the Burnley bus stop was outside Melbourne House? |
Re: Odeon Cinema Accrington
melbourne street was the ribble bus station you could go to bunley,padiham,manchester,leeds/bradford,whalley,or wherever and have a milkshake or summat in the melbo.
