Strange Marks - Spooky
9 Attachment(s)
Here are some pics from an aerial survey of Accrington done some time in the early to mid 1940's.
Can anyone suggest what the strange marks might be. The last couple are pics of the trenches on top of the coppice - I put them in because I thought that they would be of interest. |

Alien invasion? They look for all the world like something out of von Daniken's "Chariots of the Gods"

Re: Strange Marks - Spooky
The pic with the zig-zag trench is located at the hospital end of Queens Road West. My guess is that it is either the remains of some sort of trenching execise carried out at the begining of the war, or possibly an air raid shelter of some kind. Zig-zags are used in trenches to reduce the blast effect of explosions.
The stick like figure is located at the top of Hodder Street and suggests field drainage trenches, though I cannot see where it might drain to. The circular marks are a complete mystery to me. the only thing that I can come up with is some sort of radio or radar installation. Whatever they were had clearly been removed before the photographs were taken. The pictures themselves appear to be taken using a camera filter or film processing that emphasizes disturbed earth and shows it as white, the more recent the disturbance the whiter it is. |

Re: Strange Marks - Spooky
This one is where the flying saucer was parked ready to become our tourist attraction, when the little green men found that their services would after all not be required, they blasted off back where they came from.
Outer circle= the impressions left by the landing pads inner circle= the scorched area from where the rockets blasted it back into space. http://www.accringtonweb.com/forum/a...achmentid=2928 |
Re: Strange Marks - Spooky
Oh, before you ask, the five marks in between the inner & outer circles are I hope the graves of the silly b*ggers who thought up the idea of a flying saucer in the first place.
 |
