Have we diversified or just changed

Now don't get me wrong...but after reading threads for the last 2 years or so, I feel that things are changing on Accy web.

It seems that we have a different attitude, a different type of thread, and a different view point. I'm not against change, and I'm not against improvement, or youthful attitude. But we seem to be moving into a direction of (how can I say), indeterminate everyday soap opinion.

Please correct me if I'm wrong...and I won't complain... but we seem to have lost the thread on our locality. I'm all for the youth of this world airing their opinions on this site, and I for one welcome it as without it we older people won't learn either.

But are we approaching the problems (OK call them Challenges) of our town and its future properly. Now the site is a free-for-all in effect, but it is also a forum where we can air our views and intelligently ask opinions of others.

My question is: Are we achieving anything? or just cackling?

i am new hear so i cant speak for the past few years here but i will admit my posts are usualy moaning about somthing or other but thats only because i am annoyed at how the council and other factors are destroying this town and making those who live in its lives more miserable each year

see i told ya i was moaning a lot lately :)

Re: Have we diversified or just changed

I'm not sure I understand your point properly Darby. Are you saying we post too much about things which have nothing to do with Accrington? Should we limit our discussions to Accrington based topics only? I realise we have some nonsensical threads but personally I enjoy those as they brighten up many a dull day.

Could you please clarify the term "older people"
what is your interpretation of an older person

Re: Have we diversified or just changed

I am not in a position to comment over what has happened in the last 2 years, but like Willow I enjoy the light heartedness of some of the posts......there are some posts which are serious and throw up moral and ethical issues(like the Euthanasia post).
While these may not be strictly local, they allowed people to explore their own feelings and to listen to and, I hope, respect the viewpoints of others.
While some may say we are cackling, I would say we are communicating...... and not just within narrow social groups or age bands......that has to be good.
Maybe you should have a look at the Hyndburn Life site>

Re: Have we diversified or just changed

If we were to narrow the topics to issues which concern only Accrington, then I think it would become quite a boring site because we would be constantly chewing over the same old issues. I think a lot of the younger members would cease to visit as well.

At the end of the day i think if people did'nt like the thread topic they wouldnt participate.

Oh no don't do that, only joined in Dec 04 but I think it's a great forum, loads of interesting topics, and replies. Every one has their own view point and no one over steps the mark.

Re: Have we diversified or just changed

I for one am not from accrington and dont spend a lot of time there, although i do visit when i can mum n dad live there.
But if it was all accrington orientated i would not be able to participate as much as much as i do. (then i would be unhappy).

Re: Have we diversified or just changed

I do agree that there is an increased amount of threads that seem to be posted in inappropriate forums. But I am not sure what you mean about "indeterminate everyday soap opinion", Darby.

Margaret Pilkington 29-01-2005 22:15

Re: Have we diversified or just changed

If threads are posted in an inappropriate forum, maybe it is because there is not too much guidance to help newer members. This General Chat forum is supposed to be open for anything, it says 'from dog dirt to giving birth, you will find it here' or something along those lines anyway.
Life is an everyday soap opera anyway. It is good to be able to discuss news topics alongside local issues.

Margaret Pilkington 29-01-2005 22:16

Re: Have we diversified or just changed

There is a lot of variety on this web site and it should be applauded and encouraged.

WillowTheWhisp 29-01-2005 22:37

Re: Have we diversified or just changed

Looking back over the past few months I think we've had quite a lot of discussion that is Accy based - most of it probably grumbling about the council, from Peter Britcliffe to wheelie bins. A-b usually brings up some good points from the Observer of which ex-pats may not be aware and locals may simply have missed.

Perhaps some of the threads in General may better belong in Anything Goes but they tend to get missed in there as some people don't wander that far down the forums. :D

I love this site.

I quite agree Margaret, we may live on an island but we don't live in a vacuum and this board reflects that fact. It also demonstrates how everything is connected, in one way or another, to everything else.

As I said earlier though, I am not quite sure what Darby is trying to get at. Is it the triviality of the thread subjects or the frivolousness of some of the replies, or is it both, or neither? It is late , I am confused.

Busman747 29-01-2005 23:40

Re: Have we diversified or just changed

Sorry Darby, I too am confused, but regarding local matters, is it the likes of Britcliffe that is getting to you? Everyone seems to agree that he is a waste of space but in this democratic???? country,we have to bide our time in order to give him the "boot."

In the meantime, we will highlight his attitude to all that view the Accy web and hopefully one day, he will be gone!!

In other countries, he would be arrested, charged and probably have his tongue ripped out..but this is the U.K, so we have to be patient...........(ish)

The comments made on the Accy web surely do not go unnoticed by "big brother?"

I dont think there is anything wrong with this site. The postings may not be as serious as they once were, but that is down to some members leaving and new ones coming on site. Some people maybe just want a bit of fun, and not serious debates.I'm happy either way.

Must say, I have found this forum very interesting since joining in Dec. would hate to see it changed, there's a wide range of topics, and it dos'nt get to heavy.

Unfortunately at times when we have had serious debates some people who were in a minority took offence where none was intended and chose to leave. That's a shame. I enjoy a good discussion and at times when the other point of view has been put forward clearly it has sometimes influenced my opinion to the point of changing my views.

At other times I've stuck to my guns and had karma points deducted because of that but que sera, that's life.

Sadly, I think it is the fact that some people have found it difficult to cope with the fact that others don't share their opinion which has led to the avoidance in some cases of more serious discussions for fear of other people getting the hump and going off in a huff.

I enjoy the fun stuff and the serious stuff and I like a bit of both.

Life is sometimes SERIOUS sometimes SAD sometimes SILLY sometimes CONFUSING.... That is why this site is almost PERFECT :)

Margaret Pilkington 30-01-2005 13:18

Re: Have we diversified or just changed

You have hit the nail on the head there Simon......it is perfect, and the community spirit is a joy.

And Busman..... about giving PB the 'Boot'......reminds me of a Russian Proverb = The noblest of kings and the poorest of beggars are eventually put to bed with a shovel.

Darby 31-01-2005 05:55

Re: Have we diversified or just changed

Sorry to one and all that I've been somewhat absent for the last few weeks. We are in the process of moving and with work taking 10-12 hours a day, I haven't had much time.

Well, where do I start....I only asked the question to see if anybody had noticed that we have had an influx of new and probably much younger members in the last 4-6 months.

As for being an "older person"....its not the attitude but the experience that counts (in life I mean). There have been a few threads that appeared to me to be a bit juvenile, but we also need and must welcome younger members. It must be that I've seen so many before (not just on this site) that we seem to be posting just for postings sake.

OK there's no need to get involved in a thread if it's not to your liking. And we do have some cracking threads.

As for Accy specific things....I am all for more about Accy....I woz brung up there, and living so far away it's important for me not to loose contact with Accy and learn what's happening and how people are reacting to everyday life.

I think Simon hit it on the head with his short statement. We are all of those things and more....that's why we continue to grow in stature.

As most of us know...there has been some argy-bargy...and a few have gone off in a huff (no names). But I personally feel we have some good sensible discussions (I won't call them arguements), and have agreed to disagree on many occasions.

So going back to my original statement and open question, it seems that most are very happy on this site, not only with the threads, but with the attitudes of our fellow members. I certainly have no axe to grind, and I just wanted to know how the rest of you all thought regarding the direction we are going in.

Thank you for your replies..and I'll shut mi gob now!

WillowTheWhisp 31-01-2005 06:58

Re: Have we diversified or just changed

I think the fact that we are posting so much as we do and joining in on a variety of topics actually answers the question for itself.

If we weren't happy with the board and its "direction" we wouldn't be here and it would die a death. I've seen that happen to once active sites and its sad to see them fold. This one is so lively and full of such a mixture.

I hope the younger members don't mind that I ignore some of their threads but some of them obviously don't concern me (such as starting a band) but its good to see that they get response from the relevant people.

I do post a lot but that's usually because I've got something to waffle about however trivial it may seem. I'd rather reply to someone even if what I have to say isn't earth shattering than let someone feel ignored. I used to moderate on another message board and new members sometimes said how they felt unwelcome when a new thread they started didn't get much response. The older (in membership as opposed to age) members were sometimes accused of being "cliquey". I don't think that's the case here and I hope "newbies" don't feel that.

i totally agree with you both, as it says its our forum to enjoy, so some of us dont agree or loose posts or whatever its still about what WE the members feel or think at the time of postings, some i dont reply to as ( &to be honest, a bit over my head) but i love to read all the postings. keep posting people i luvs you all.

Re: Have we diversified or just changed

One of my first posts on this forum was whether it was OK for me to be here - I have never been to Accrington and have no emotional ties with the place, but I do enjoy the discussions on here.

Just because people don't share common ground in terms of where you live or which team you support (and I don't just mean football) doesn't necessarily mean that you can't have a good chin wag with them. I joined a Ferrari-lovers website, and let it slip that I didn't like Schumacher, only for one of the mods to start addressing me by my name and telling me that he didn't see how I could bring anything to the forum. He was baiting me, but I refused to rise, which was probably not what he was expecting.

The thing is, one of my best friends is a Schumacher fan!

I hope I bring something to the forum, even though I am from 'down south'!

If not, let me know and I'll bow out gracefully!!!

Well, that's settled then.

In my capacity as Chairman of the Doug and Sandra Hayes Fan Club, it gives me the very greatest pleasure to welcome Vorlon24 into the company of the blessed as an Honorary Son of Accrington. Congratulations mate!

Darby..... I don't think you should shut your gob, this post has generated a lot of discussion.......isn't that what Accywebbers are good at? And Willow one of the things I like about this site is......no cliques, and everyone gets a warm welcome and a hearing. There are many of the forums that i do not participate in...... purely because I do not follow that interest (such as football) but because of the diversity of the forums I feel that there is something for everyone.
A-B, what a cracking idea to make Vorlon an honorary Accringtonian......I'll drink to that! Cheers.

Why didn't you propose him as our cyber mayor? A new set of eyes might do the place some good!

Sorry Margaret, you misunderstood me (or didn't I make myself clear). "Shut mi gob" was meant to end my posting...I'll continue to post from time to time, when I feel I can add something or have an opinion.

As for Vorlon....welcome to Accy mate.....you're just as welcome as everybody else on this great site.

We have some great people here, from young to old, male & female...and I think we have a good balance of thoughts and ideas.

I'll be over in April...so I may give the Stag a good visiting...............
