Re: fav smell
I agree with you Sara about the smell of coffee, I remember there was a shop in Accy in the sixties called Tippings on Abbey Street at the top of Little Blackburn Road where they used to grind coffee and sell it to you freshly ground in paper bags, as you walked in the shop the smell of the different varieties of coffee was an aroma to die for, wonderful!

Re: fav smell
Unless Chav, they got knocked down while reading the paper that the fish and chips was in as they crossed the road.......and isn't it funny how fish and chips always taste better out in the open air......especially at the seaside?

I love the smell of new cut hay and, honestly, the smell of horses. I don't even mind the smell of horse manure. :D
Must agree about fresh coffee and bacon, though, and the smell of tomato plants always reminds me of my dad, who grew dozens of them every year. :) |

My own favourite smell would have to be the smell of a freshly cooked bacon butty; closely followed by Cerutti 1881 perfume. :D |

Re: fav smell
No......can't go for the apple pie with cinnamon.......allergic to cinnamon, and if by some remote chance I have apple pie, then I am the one who gets the 'toenails'......I KNOW they aren't really toenails, they are the pods the pips come in....... but they remind me of toenails. I think apple pie and ice cream is a poor dessert.......poor on their own, and not helped much when put together.
|
Re: fav smell
I suppose it is a good job we don't all like the same things!
Sparkie and Lettie you can have my share of apple pie! |
Re: fav smell
Fresh cut grass(the normal green stuff not the smoking type!) Coffee, The sea, Bacon, all get high on my list.
I too like teh smell of Coal Tar soap and even carbolic. |

No Park.......If there was only apple pie for dessert, I would pass.......and I have been known to miss a main course for dessert.......but I don't care for apple pie at all. Would rather have rice pudding......home made, with a lovely crusty brown top.....dollop of raspberry jam...mmmmmmmmmmmmm! I do like the fancier stuff too.
So you can have my slice of the pie! |

What about Jam rolly, done in the steamer.....mmmmmmm add the custard..............mmm. Remember the days of my Gran's cooking ;) |
Re: fav smell
Yeah, that and spotted dick.....steamed in the rag. They don't make stuff like that anymore. I do still make my own rice pudd, and very occasionally jam roly poly..... but have to watch the waistline these days.

Re: fav smell
Oh yes the "New Age" shops for definite, followed a close second by "Lush" and "Pink" - then for something completely different freshly baked bread, cinnamon, vanilla and my favourite floral smells, honeysuckle and freesia. Why doesn't freesia seem to smell as good these days though?
|
Re: fav smell
I love the smell of asphalt, fabric softener, boxes of chocs, grass, and baby powder.
|
Re: fav smell
I love honeysuckle; you can't beat a walk down a country lane on a late summer evening. As for freesia there’s a bunch mixed with white roses to my left as I write and they small perfect together. The problem with freesia as with most cut flowers today is they loose there scent when their forced and because we want them all year round we lose out.

Re: fav smell
I can't believe that only WestEnder has touched on the most beautiful smell in the U.K.! Horse Manure!.........Well, pigs actually to be precise,:D
Further down south, the fields are annually coated in a lovely layer of well rotted sh** to encourage the cereal crops to grow. Some years ago, the farmers played about with processed dung that didn't have that distinctive "ammonia" smell but have recently reverted back to the "proper" stuff! For those that were brought up in the countryside, it was better that the best french perfume (unless you tried putting it behind your ears!) It was a sight to see the "townies" cringe as those lovely smells invaded their nostrils:rolleyes: |
Re: fav smell
Horse is OK, cow I can live with but pig poo is another thing entirely - and don't you dare call me a townie!
|
Re: fav smell
if i was allergic to cinnamon and apple pie then i would be looking up the post......... ANEASY WAY TO COMITT SUICIDE.

What About Years Ago When Mums Used To Hold Their Kids Over The Tar Boiler When The Council Were Pouring Tar Between The Cobble Sets. That Smell Was Supposed To Be Good For The Chest.......

Out of interest, I drove down the back alley behind my old house on Church Street, other than new gates and the bin holes being filled in, it was just the same as it was when I left for Fern Gore in the mid 1960s the cobbled surface was just as I last saw it. I suppose it hasn’t really changed in over a hundred and odd years. |
Re: fav smell
Only For The Worse .......bring Back The Cobblestones
|
Re: fav smell
Mums used to hold a baby over the tar boiler if it had croup...... it was supposed to cure it.
As for hot summers and playing with gas tar.......one of my brothers once did that and got it stuck in his hair and on his school pants......Mother was not best pleased.... in fact she was furious......so much so that she shaved his head rather than just cutting the bit with the gas tar in. Everyone at his school thought he had nits. The trousers were treated with lard. |
Re: fav smell
No suicide for me over applepie with cinnamon........don't like the stuff.....so it isn't much of a loss. I do like a nice baked egg custard with lots of nutmeg though.
|
