Did the Queen say it ?
 

Today`s Daily Mail alleges that the Queen has said that a Register Office Wedding is vulgar. If true I wonder what the thoughts are of the thousands of couples who married in a Register Office and have brought up their offspring to behave better than most of Liz & Phil`s kids.

Please note "alleged & if true" before asking if I believe all I read.

I have attended register office weddings and church weddings, have found neither vulgar.

If anything I may consider it a tad hypocritical to marry in church if neither bride nor groom are regular attendants at the church. A register office wedding is often shorter as much of what happens in church is mere padding to the actual marriage ceremony itself. (I've got my "authorised person" hat on now)

Just because people do not attend church does not make them any less a Christian than someone who does. There are plenty of people out there who are not regular churchgoers who do a hell of a lot more good than some that are.

So to say that people are hypocritical to marry in church if they are not regular churchgoers is a bit off, imo.

No of course not but if they don't go to a church on a regular basis why get married in a church? if it isn't important enough to them 52 weeks a year then why should it play a part in their wedding? They can have a meaningful ceremony elsewhere.

I disagree. I would consider myself a hypocrite if I expected an organisation to which I had no allegiance to perform a ceremony for me which could equally well (if not perhaps better for non-Christians) be performed elsewhere.

If someone does not have a belief in God then why would they make their vows asking the God they do not believe in to witness and bless them in the making of those vows?

(Note the words of the Christian marriage service incorporate "before God")

I agree with you on that basis. Non-believers should not get married in church. That is hypocritical, and wrong.

My sister got her children christened because it was 'the done thing'.

She asked me to be godfather to one of them, but I refused, for 2 reasons; 1 because she was doing it for the reason stated above, and 2 because she asked me along the lines of she couldn't find anyone else to do it, so could I?

also taking a shovel ive got some nice insurance policys planned :D

i would never get married in a church as it would make me a hypocryt as i have no belief in any god what so ever no matter how many arms it may have or whatever people claimed their god built i just dont buy any of it

Isn't it a requirement by law that the marriage take place in a licenced building?

I probably didn't word it right because that was more what I meant. I can't understand why someone who doesn't believe in anything would want to have their wedding in a church representing something they don't believe in. but lots of people do it.

My Dad used to say that people use churches mainly for "hatches, matches and dispatches" (Christenings, weddings and funerals)

We're getting married in church but unfortunately it isn't a very pretty setting so we're going to have some photos in the park.

What you're doing makes perfect sense to me. I can't understand why anyone would want to be married in a church if the church doesn't feature as part of their life. It makes far more sense to do something which means more to you.

I don't think our church would refuse to marry someone who never came but I think they might wonder why the people wanted it.

We got married in the Register Office at Haslingden one Monday dinner time.....it cost seventeen shillings and sixpence......so hubby got half a crown change from a pound.....he said he thought it was a good deal.

I couldn't be doing with all the fuss of a church wedding......we didn't have much of a celebration either...sausage sandwiches, battenburg cake and a bottle of Champagne that a friend gave us. My parents didn't attend and my father said he would give it 6 months. At my Silver wedding he gave us a Silver tea set and I said to him 'Dad it's been a bloody long six months' In October of this year we will have been married for 39 years.
