Little Britain........
Little Britain....fact or fiction? An hilarious parody of today's society, or a cruel parody of social stereo-types?
|
Re: Little Brtitain......
Not a personal favourite of mine but I have to admit I have found some of it hilarious. I think we’re still in the realms of the cruel parody of social stereo-types. I don’t recall actually seeing any of the characters in real life other than the girl; you see them trawling around the school gates, puffing away with their legs akimbo everywhere I suppose. It’s a sad fact that Blackpool’s the worse place for underage pregnancy and single mothers. I think up here it’s more to do with opportunity and a sense of security in benefits rather than a lack of education. I hate nothing more than to see a young good looking lass not much more than 15 or 16 pushing a pram around, more so when you start to see those looks deteriorate with the stress and hardships that follow. Such a waist to my mind, how many of those girls could have made something of there lives.

Re: Little Brtitain......
Yeah, but no, yeah Vicky Pollard is quite the most reportedly seen character. It is something we all have to do though- make decisions @ that age which'll affect the rest of your life. Of course, wanting to join the police you can always change, having a baby you can't so easily. Though Vicky would probably swap her's for a Peter Andre calender.
|
Re: Little Brtitain......
Yeah I suppose your right their, As for swapping it for a Peter Andre calender, nooooo not even Vicky could be that hard up.....
|
Re: Little Brtitain......
Yeah but no, yeah she'd be daft enough to swap her baby for last years Peter Andre calender. The baby was called Paris, after Paris Hilton, who Vicky used to hang with in L.A., on a young offenders exchange system.

Can someone or can l correct the spelling of Britain in the title thread? I am the ONLY bad speller in the village!

However, back to the subject. I can't say I particularly like the program and some of it does come over as tasteless but I think it is more poking fun at the fact that we tend to stereotype people rather than at the people themselves. It's a bit like Alf Garnet using all those non-PC terms. The joke isn't on the people he is calling c**n and n****r the joke is on people like him who use those words and showing how stupid and bigotted people can be. |
Re: Little Brtitain......
True Warren Mitchell's politics were far from those of the character he plays. l bet Matt Lucas is sound too, DAFFYD, OOPS David Walliams, seems a more complex person, l mean Abby Titmus?

I'M having a Fat Fighters round @ garindas, Thurs. 7.30! lt's so patronizing, when she never understands a word, Mary the well spoked Asian lady says -& very funny.

Re: Little Brtitain......
Mary's a Fat Fighter in Little Britain. lt's basically a dig @ Weight Watchers, which has more active atendees than the Church of England.
On Thurs. l'll basically lecteur you because your all obese, whilst eating a pie. You pay me and leave- easy. |

Think they repeat it too much though!! but I do find it funny, and hubby takes them off really well. We will just be falling asleep when he will say sommet in one of their voices and it cracks me up hehehe.

Re: Little Brtitain......
Horses for courses! The all Monty Python/ Goon thing leaves me cold, l think its appeal was more to men, [ thats just because my Dad liked them!]
All the rest you dislike, l loved. Realism with a cruel twist. All northern except The Office. l never found southerners very funny in the 17 years l was there. Sat on a bus in Liverpool though, l used to regularly wet myself, earwigging on conversations. |
Re: Little Brtitain......
Doug, I loved Monty Python. I grew up listening to, and loving, the Goons and Python was the natural successor. But, you didn't like The Office? I really thought David Brent was a masterpiece of characterisation. I've never had a boss like him (though I've had some strange ones) - but my late husband did. The League of Gentlemen was funny in parts but a bit too surreal even for my tastes. Black Adder was very good but every time they repeat the last ever episode - I still get a lump in my throat.
|
Re: Little Brtitain......
So many great comedies yet they repeat such a small percentage over & over. I know Penelope Keith's lines in the Good Life better than her.
Fave repeat,, is Gimme, Gimme, so truly awful love it. |

Yeah Sean is the star of Corrie, hes like Raquel, over the top but beleivable. Better than all the serious gaty stuff they tried to do. Brooky did it 15 years ago. Corries strengh is its strong female led humour [inc. Sean] from Florrie Lindley to Cilla.
oopps wrong thread! |

LOL, OK shes over the top without being belivable. She gets funny story lines though, selling Schmichael to buy boots was funny, poor lil Ches, aahhhhhh.
|
Re: Little Brtitain......
Sean in Corrie reminds me of a gay couple we knew, years ago, in Whitby. One of them was very "straight" in his manner but his partner was as camp as a Boy Scouts' Jamboree. He was the life and soul of every party and I loved him to bits, he was Sean to a T. I am an ardent Lily Savage fan, myself. Normally, I can't stand "drag" but Lily's superb. :D

Lilly is beyond drag, she adverised tights for pretty polly! l used to go and watch her every Thursday @ The Vauxhall Tavern in sarf London, before she made it big. She was much, ruder & cruder & funny than she ever gets away with on tv. Name dropping again, oh garinda!- Paul o Grady used to come to my housemates parties & wouldn't speak to anyone until you spoke to him first, painfully shy. l'm quite shy too!
|
Re: Little Brtitain......
Slinky l agree, it's like Monty Python, its very dry, & appeals mainly to men. Gay & female humour tends to be bitchy & more cutting,[ cuz they've had harder lives!]

Some of the most aggravating gays are the rufty tufty types, no one sees them though. They call themselves straight acting, [ what does that mean?], but call each other Ethel, & Doris. l actually said Daffyd 's line to a gay in the Black Dog.

I'd love to live next to the houses where the kids live, but not next to mad Frank, weeing through your letter box, & torchin your car to light his fag on. lt does show how strong an extended family is. Especially when you're a single parent like Frank, & your wifes run off with a lezzer.

Re: Little Brtitain......
Speaking of the Vauxhall Tavern, did you ever see Adrella do Liza Minelli? And did you you ever witness Lily Savage and Adrella on stage together?? Laughed so much I ached.
On another tack... why do the BBC insist on repeating Only Fools and Horses at every conceivable opportunity? This has to be the un-funniest show ever made. It makes me cringe with embarrasment every time I see it. There must be zillions of better shows in the archives. Nearest and Dearest with Hilda Baker and Jimmy Jewel was a killer. So was The Brittas Empire. Monty Python was was very funny in it's day but is very dated now. I don't see the point in The Office either, or The Smoking Room. Gimme Gimme is Brilliant! Little Britain is becoming repetitive. I like the surreality of The League of Gentlemen. Father Ted is too good for words. I have just noticed that in the four pages of this thread there has not been one US sitcom mentioned. Roseanne, Will and Grace and Third Rock From the Sun. Friends is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO NOT FUNNY! |
Re: Little Brtitain......
Yes l saw Adrella with Lily! lt was the high- light of my week!
Yes there have been some good American comedies, when all we had here were things like Ever Decreasing Circles- well acted, safe & not very funny. Enjoyed- Soap, Golden Girls, Roseanne, & yes Friends. Which is like comfort food, easy to go down & not to challeging to swallow. lt had Fergie in though, how funny is that! Fools/ Horses, why is it on every week, prime time, like it's a treat for us? Last of the Summer wine, it's been on for ever, as a pension for old hoofers, but does anyone actually like it, or has laughed @ it? |
Re: Little Brtitain......
Hmmm, I forgot about Golden Girls. What about The New Statesman, and Bottom and The Young Ones? For some reason, probably due to my shattered personality, I rather like violent slapstick.
|
Re: Little Brtitain......
Just started over here, cant find anything funny in it, thought it was Canadian it was that bad. Got to agree with AB Python is up there as is Father Ted but current favorite is Coupling and just seen a program on Eddie Izzard that was Brilliant.
|
Re: Little Brtitain......
>> Last of the Summer wine, it's been on for ever, as a pension for old hoofers, but does anyone actually like it, or has laughed @ it?<<
Apparently the head of a dysfunctional family in Windsor is quite fond of it. Why is it that ITV don't do comedy anymore? |
Re: Little Brtitain......
I used to love the golden girls. they used to show it on Living TV all the time.... Sophia was my fave.... I am so sad :D As for friends, it was ok at first, but just became so un-funny later on. Roseanne was a classic and gimme gimme is hilarious... hope they do make that 3rd series.
|
Re: Little Brtitain......
Sex in the City was fantastic. I can still sit through the repeats on sky.
|
Re: Little Brtitain......
everybody knows the best program on tv is the simpsons
|
Re: Little Brtitain......
If her Majesty is approving of Last of the Summer Wine, thats the reason it's still on. Does she watch Antiques Rd. Show after, as it now clashes with Corrie for 5 mins?
|
Re: Little Brtitain......
Vicar of Dibley is also up there with my favourites. :D
|
Re: Little Brtitain......
i like harry enfields and chums. especaily kevin and perry
|
Re: Little Brtitain......
I enjoy the Python stuff and Goons;read all of Spike Milligan's books,a comic genius but like so many others who make people laugh he was a very depressed individual.
Can't believe that Phoenix Nights hasn't had a mention on here yet! Also a big fan of Dinner Ladies and the classic Acorn Antiques! |
Re: Little Brtitain......
Vicar of Dibley is funny in a nice gentle way, like a nice, soft warm blanket on a cold winters night. Or a bowl of Heinz tomatoe soup, when you have a cold.
|
Re: Little Brtitain......
yeh the viar of dibley is pretty good. father ted is better though. i like a lot of comedies. i can't decide which i like the most.
|
Re: Little Brtitain......
Phoenix Nights, was mentioned, but only by someone saying they didn't like it. lt's a classic, though Paddy & Max, the sort of sequel was appalling.
|
Re: Little Brtitain......
HOW DARE YOU!!!. NO WAY. IT WAS WELL FUNNY.
Quote:

Re: Little Brtitain......
Yes but compared with the really well drawn characters in Phoenix, it didn't make me laugh as much.
Face painting with spray cans still creases me. |
Re: Little Brtitain......
yeh i think phenix nights was better but max paddy was fair funny as well. the best phenix nights is the one where the 2 bodygaurds build that robot and flatten all the others in that robot competition.

No, l'm afraid it didn't ring my bell very much!
The best bit for me was the two of them in the mobile home in the opening titles singing. |

that is max and paddy. that robot thing happend in phenix nights

Re: Little Brtitain......
Doh, l know! LOL.
Best Phoenix for me was stars in your eyes, when Den Potter cancelled the acts, & the staff stepped in. Brittany. Lulu. Gary Glitter!!!!!! Class. |
Re: Little Brtitain......
Little Britain is great, it is a bit repetitive but still funny, I have tickets to see them next year, The League of Gentlemen (series 3) is a favourite of mine, there's a lot of good comedy around at the moment, though dont really get The Smoking Room, tried several times but it still doesn't click.
|
Re: Little Brtitain......
I think Vicar of Dibley is good because all the characters are so well-drawn. I think the sex-mad (or maybe just mad) Owen is wonderful and Alice and Hugo are superb, especially Alice. I hated the ending of the last Christmas show, though, when Dawn French got all po-faced about the problems in Africa, no doubt due to her husband's influence. Yes, I'm right up there with the sentiment and the message and I do care, but this was not the right place for it.
Fools and Horses has been flogged to death and the only character I ever found funny in Last of the Summer Wine was Thora Hird's - the rest is abysmal. Phoenix Nights was good but Peter Kay's funnier as a stand-up. I loved The Good Life in the 70s, when it was relevant, but the point of it is lost after 30 years. Most American sitcoms leave me cold. I still think you'd have to go a long way to beat the Monty Python sketch "Four Yorkshiremen". As my late husband was a Yorkshireman and my dad, though born in Darwen, was brought up in Yorkshire until the age of 10, I find this sketch absolutely hilarious, and it never "dates". It could even be translated to "Four Lancashiremen", couldn't it? Who hasn't listened to 4 middle-aged men from humble backgrounds, who've "made it" in the world, competing with each other about how awful their childhood was? My own dad, who "made it", would happily tell you how he (half) left school at 13 to be a part-timer at Steiners, "And I was so small I had to stand on a box......" ;) Pure genius, by the Pythons, there, |

Victoria Wood? Acorn Antiques was mentioned, [now a musical in the west end.] l love her & Julie Walters. The film they did set in Blackburn, & filmed nr. Tommy Balls was really funny- 'Pat & Margaret.' A motorway caff woman reunited with her long lost sister, who is basically Joan Collins. Hilarious, & like a lot of comedy tinged with sadness.
