I do a little fell walking as well, nothing to taxing, have done the 3 Peaks, Snowden and several others, at my own pace that is, good for the legs, and some great views, but I would not attempt to run, cause I have never done any. |
Re: Gym
Hi Willow
I have been a member of the New Era Gym for the last 2 years and have always found the Gym Instructor to be very professional and have received all relevant information about each machine. Are you a member of a group who hire the Gym or are you a New Era member? The green heart is for if you are using a heart monitor. I am sure that is you ask at the Reception for any further information regarding the Gym the Instructor will be more than happy to help. From a heppy New Era gym member |
Re: Gym
I'm with the Hyndburn Healthy Heart team (think that's the name) and it's one of them who does the gym session. There are a lot of little off-shoots from a ten week course on healthier living (from a heart point of view mainly) and one of the things I've done which is supposed to eventually produce fresh fruit and veg for us is get an allotment plot. Not a whole allotment, just a little plot in a communal one. Then there's a walking group but I haven't joined that yet because I don't do "out in the snow".
I joined the gym bit because I want to improve my overall fitness (which at present is abysmal) as well as lose weight and this was one of their suggested ways of doing so. It's donkey's ages since I went to a gym - before my eldest daughter was born and she'll be 14 this year. I used to be fit and active but following a lengthy period of illness it all went to pot. Hopefull this is the start of a new trend. If A-b can give up smoking I can give up not being fit! |

Re: Gym
Willow, find a different gym. If the people in charge do not fully understand how their equipment works, or haven't found the time to sort out a fitness programme for you, then you are better off somewhere else.
From a health & safety viewpoint, you should not be let loose on fitness equipment without a proper induction course, where I would fully expect the works of the equipment to be explained to you. Do the fitness instructors hold relevant first-aid qualifications? Do they know what to do if you or anyone else were to have a heart attack, for example? |

I actually refused to use anything that hadn't been adequately explained to me but her attitude was perilously close to sulking and she said I could "play" on the treadmill all the time if I wanted, which I didn't want and which seemed pointless as I wanted to have an overall effect and not just keep wearing my legs out. I will be going again on Monday and see if anything has been sorted out. We had a sort of mad game session at Asda on Thursday morning and although that was fun it hadn't been timed very well and overran the allotted time which meant poor old Busman was left to his own devices humping wood about. I shall see how it goes. There's another one of them who gives me more confidence in her and I spoke to her on the phone this week. She does seem to know what she's talking about. |

New Era always has a qualified First Aider on duty and our Gym Instructor is a Level 2 instructor and member of the Register of Exercise Professionals. If you ever have any queries just ask at reception and we will make sure your queries are answered by a trained professional who understands your exercise needs. All our Gym members undergo a thorough induction and can leave messages for the instuctor at any time. Programmes may be updated in the same way. I have talked to Helen Jamieson, Healthy Development Specialist and Manager of the Healthy Hearts Team, and she would like to reassure you that all her staff are First Aid trained and qualified Gym Instructors. They are in the best position to assess your training needs and advise you on the most suitable training programme. If you have any concerns about the Healthy Hearts Programme Helen and her team would welcome the opportunity set your mind at rest, and support you in achieving your goals. Good luck. Re: Gym
There you go Willow,an answer from the top!
They really are very helpful at the centre, given the opportunity I'm sure your health will benefit. |
Re: Gym
Thank you Liz. :)
It's not just my heart I'm working on Lampman. I have a lot of other bits that need help but I've been handicapped by knee problems for a long time. Recent improvements there have meant I should now be able to start doing more than I could and hopefully get back to some reasonable level of fitness again. It's the leg-end of me that I've had trouble with though. |

ok the dunkenhalgh was advertising itself as free membership etc does that mean u get it free for a yr or do u still pay for the sessions?[/QUOTE been a whiel since ive used the dunkenhalgh gym but for equipment your prob better off with one of the other local gyms or the sports centre . They ve redone all the spors centre one not long back havent they and its not that pricey to go |
Re: Gym
Only problem with the sports centre one is if you use it a lot then paying for each session individually soon mounts up so you are better off joining a gym. If you are only going to use it casually then going there is fine. The one I go to is £25 a month, but I go about 3 times a week.
