Re: accrington railway bridge

Thats only half of it. I may be wrong, "and if I am I must have been ******" but it has a gental curve to it. I love accy viraduct it one of those sights, like the coppice, that never leave you. But I'd rather be up Ribblehead with a couple of piants on a warm summer evening.

I'm pretty sure Todmorden's viaduct is stone built and curved.

Accy railway station, however, was one of only 6 of its type in the country. Anyone know? It's been on here on another thread before.

Awww, come on now, Mr T, Sir. Pray, do tell us.
A combination of Alzheimer's and general stoopidity denies me the chance of ever remembering why Accy Station is in such select company. :o

How many arches has ours got? I tried counting them once but gave it up as a bad job.

I should have some photos of Ribblehead somewhere too Doug. I'll have a hunt but it may be a while because I'm making a ring cushion as well as being on AccyWeb.

Must admit that's got me intrigued, too! I've just spent a quick ten minutes asking my mate, Google, but no answers are forthcoming. I'll take a wild guess at...it's one of only six stations that lead directly onto a viaduct. Probably totally wrong, but, come on, Tealeaf, spill the beans!

Yep...you're totally wrong. The correct answer is that Accy railway station was one of only 6 'triangular' stations in the country, giving the choice of travelling in 3 directions, as against the usual 2.

WillowTheWhisp 26-09-2007 14:56

Re: accrington railway bridge

Didn't it cease to be triangular in the 1960s when the Manchester line was closed?

That is why I used the past, not the present tense.

How's this for being a fogie: I remember when a platform ticket was 2d, but a single to Ossy was only 1 1/2d. So if you wanted to do a little trainspotting you could save money.

Being a youngish "old fogey" over 21 i went a hunting for pics maps etc and ended up on history pages for the area. Seems odd that what started out as looking for one thing became something else.

Re: accrington railway bridge

The rails are laid on an anual basis if you are unfortunate enough to live near it the screeching noise increases towards spring, this rackret was one of the reasons Hyndburn Council moved to Scaitcliffe Houese from the old skill centre'' it is said that only certain carriages can negotiate it at speed as the catch points can only take a little strain main line 'intercity trains csnnot cross it ,so yes it is unique in that respect.

WillowTheWhisp 28-09-2007 08:05

Re: accrington railway bridge

I'm not sure if I've understood that. Do you mean intercity trains cannot pass through Accrington?

MargaretR 28-09-2007 08:19

Re: accrington railway bridge

If this bridge cannot cope with a modern rail system we have to own up to the fact that it will eventually be ''USELESS BUT PRETTY".
What do we do then? - vote for demolition or preserve it as a museum piece to encourage tourism? - or find an alternative use (anyone for bungy jumping?) :D

It would depend on the lenghth of the carriages, Willow, the distance between the sets of wheels to enable them to negotiate the sharp curve in the rail. If you go to the top of the bridge that crosses the platform and look down the 'track' you will see how sharp it really is. As a rule there is always a new set of tracks stored inside the ones already laid. this is to enable them to be changed at short notice, as they are measured with a special engine at night time. As the Inter-City trains are built for speed, it is not practical to slow it down to three miles an hour. I hope this makes my post a little clearer, As yes given the right equiptment it would be possible for the Iter-City trains to pass through the Viaduct.
The rails wear unevenly at the beggining on one side and the end of the other, making them 'non parrallel. This is where the screeching noise comes from.

Re: accrington railway bridge

But we can still have our little local trains going through can't we? Well, not always so local. I've gone by train from Accy to York on the Scarborough train. Hope that one keeps going.

Yes these
trains were designed for Trans-Penine travel and negotiating obstacles worse than the Accrington Viaduct, I would think that there are 'tighter' bridges than this betweenScarborough and Blackpool.;)

Todmorden viaduct is stone built but it has very little curve, not enough to really notice. The main curve is on the banking before the viaduct begins.
