Re: Insomnia
I've been an insomniac since I was about twelve. Every time I try to sleep I start thinking "You know, there are better things I could be doing right now". I've had times when I've literally gone a week without being able to sleep at all.
The best method I've found for getting to sleep is just getting some exercise and tiring yourself out before you sleep (make what you will of that. I'm trying my best not to resort to being filthy here). Go out for a run, do isometric exercises for half an hour, whatever you like. It tends to help me. Also, having a voice in the room tends to give you something to doze off to. Listen to Radio 4 while you're trying to sleep. I'm not suggesting that it's boring, but it helps if you know someone else is alive outside of your bedroom. |
Re: Insomnia
I was a good sleeper until a combination of Parkinson's and weird, [prescribed!] drugs mean l have one night speeding my t***s off, and then one night unconcious.
Thankfully this site and Janice Long on radio 2, keep me sane on those endless nights. |

Re: Insomnia
I have spent many a night surfing the web and meeting all kinds of weird and wonderful people :P . I've tried allsorts to try and nod off but it doesn't really seem to work. I usually go for about 2 days without sleep then have a night where I manage to get some, sleep that is.

Re: Insomnia
Although I have never had insomnia as a long term thing, I find that I get it as a temporary thing when I have done night shifts. I am unable to get a good day's sleep especially after doing my first night. I will probably get about 3 or 4 hours then have to work an 11 hour shift. Luckily the more nights I do, the better I sleep so by my 4th or 5th night I can usually get about 7 hours. I am as crammed as a wasp if I don't get 7 or 8 hours a night and frequently fall asleep when Sparky comes to visit,(although it's not his fault) so he can vouch for me that I am one of these people who needs loads of sleep. I can fully sympathise with anyone who suffers from insomnia as I don't think I could hack it as a full time affliction...:)

Re: Insomnia
If any insomniacs can try and co-ordinate there sleepness with mine, the partys round at my gaff.

Re: Insomnia
Try having my kids for a week, you will soon go to sleep just to find that nice warm quiet place you cant find when you are awake.

Re: Insomnia
Has anyone seen Speed Up Slow Down on the TV. They had a suggestion about problems with getting off to sleep.
They said to find the most uncomfortable chair in the house and put it out on the landing. When you have problems getting off to sleep, go and sit on this chair. After awhile (apparently) the brain will think that a bed is a much nicer place to be and you should (after your session on the chair) hopefully get to sleep easier. I don't know whether it will work or not, but I guess it may be worth a try for the more desperate among you!!! |
Re: Insomnia
Yeh it takes me flamin ages to get to sleep. i think it is because i always daydream. but it usaly takes me about 1 or 2 hours to get to sleep or sometimes i don't get any sleep at all.

Re: Insomnia
Ever since I took up Yoga I have started sleeping better. I do a session right before I go to bed and its that relaxing I don't have time for insomnia.
Failing that I have been told that alcohol works.:D |
Re: Insomnia
If you find you are still awake after 20 minutes in bed, then get up and do something really boring.....don't watch TV it is a brain stimulant despite what you might think of the programs.......make sure your room is not too warm, and reduce any light by having a blackout blind.....if you have an alarm clock with an LED display cover it up with a cloth. Exercise just before bed is not usually a good idea as adrenaline is produced and this is likely to keep you awake, reduce caffeine containing drinks.
Have a warm milky drink.... this contains L-tryptophan and it is one of the sleep inducing substances....also a warm milky drink takes us back psychologically to when we were babies. A warm bath before bed may also help induce sleep. One drop of Lavender oil on your pillow is helpful too.....but only ONE drop any more than that and it will keep you awake. Insomnia is a sleep habit disorder, if you are a persistent sufferer then you need to re-program your sleep habits. There you go......I think there is enough there for the time being. |
