Re: why doesnt accrington have a next?
chavs cant afford cloths from next
the most likely real reason is that hyndbun council charge way too much council tax on buisnesses in or near the town centre and it puts companies off setting up here also accrington center is so hard to acess by car and get decent parking they dont bother setting up shop here if you look down whalley road most buisnesses are now mostly kebab shops or takeawy food joints as they are the only kind of buisnes that can make a go of it my m8 had a shop on whalley road and teh council tax bill was tremendous for a small buisness man and he packed up and went to the much cheaper oswaldtwistle not saying ozzy is cheap lol i mean the tax is cheaper :D |
Re: why doesnt accrington have a next?

Re: why doesnt accrington have a next?
Is there not one in the Arndale? sure there used to be one near the broadway entrance
|
Re: why doesnt accrington have a next?
There's never been a Next here unfortunately. I think all the pound shops and charity shops put decent retailers off coming here to Chav town. Fortunately the retail park at Whitebirk reputed to be getting a big Next store is classed as Hyndburn, so we could say that we are getting one, but it's not like we can just nip into town to it. :(
|
Re: why doesnt accrington have a next?
In spite of its official geographical location that retail park at Whitebirk still feels like Blackburn more than Hyndburn to me.
|
Re: why doesnt accrington have a next?
It most certainly does. I was surprised to find that it is actually Hyndburn, I'd always assumed it was Blackburn.
|
Re: why doesnt accrington have a next?
'Chav'- the original meaning of the word is either someone from Chatham in Kent, or is derived from the Romany word for boy charvo. It's recent meaning of the word, [similar to ned, townie, scallie,] is used to describe a designer baseball cap wearing boy or girl.
Perhaps if Accy was full of chavs, we can expect to see Burberry opening here soon instead of Next, and see Chav Queen Danielle Westbrook pushing her pram through the Market Hall. Totally agree with our Chav, extortionate business council tax rates mean Accrington is an unattractive option, hence the new and old empty shops. |
Re: why doesnt accrington have a next?
Well when have we really ever had any main high street clothes stores here in accrington? Clothes shopping round here has been abismal for as long as I can remember. We have Burtons for men and thats about it as far as named stores goes.
|
Re: why doesnt accrington have a next?

Icon is about the only decent place now and baileys has a few things in but your better off going blackburn reef , originals and duffer i can never find owt in next anyway plus cant see next starting a range of tracky s , stripey jumpers and nike shox for an accy branch

Re: why doesnt accrington have a next?
One of the main reasons that Accrington has a proliferation of pound and charity shops and a stagnating market is that Accrington is a low skill, thus, low wage sort of place.
Businesses follow the money. Companies like Next are not in existance to make life a more pleasant experience for anyone except themselves, they exist to make money. It can be no surprise then that when a comparison is made of average wages across all the boroughs of Britain Hyndburn comes fifth from the bottom. Put yourself in Next's shoes. Do you, as a chairman responsible to your shareholders, recommend spending a couple of million quid to open a new store in a town that cannot afford to buy what you are selling? Or do you stick to the areas where you know you can make a good profit? I know what I would do? |
Re: why doesnt accrington have a next?
But Blackburn's population is not that much higher in the wage league than Hyndburn, and l don't think their work force are anymore 'skilled,' it's just larger.
Of course the multiple chainstores are going to chase the biggest profits and locate accordingly. Given all the empty shops l'd make the rents/rates more appealing economically in Accrington. Otherwise we should make a feature of it's poverty and create a model village of charity/pound shops for coach parties to visit. |
Re: why doesnt accrington have a next?
Turn Accrington into a themepark of bad local governance, economic neglect and social decline? What would be the advertising slogan?
|
Re: why doesnt accrington have a next?
'Come to Accrington, former beauty Queen of the Industrial North, now selling musty woolies for Chariteeeeee, and smelling a bit of wee'. Don't feed the Chav's they've already had their chips.

Re: why doesnt accrington have a next?
It's all about demographics and as A-B said the perceived wealth or poverty of an area.Blackburn has a larger catchment area for consumers than Accy and an established shopping centre with brand names. We don't and never will have;it's a bit of a vicious circle really;you don't get decent shops because of economics and state of the town but decent shops would improve state of the town and encourage other retailers.....yadda yadda yadda.
All I really want is a TK Maxx,I love that store! |
Re: why doesnt accrington have a next?
It is about demographisc and wealth. Admitedly Clitheroe, is in a more affluent area, but has managed to have a thriving retail environment, with both multiples and independants. With a bit more initiative in planning there was no reason Accy couldn't have had the same variation of shops. People travel to Clitheroe to shop. Accrington's once great Market attracts few out of townies, even on flea market day. People travel for miles to go to Bury Market, so if what was on offer was appealing enough demographics don't really come into it.
|
Re: why doesnt accrington have a next?
Clitheroe is quite picturesque and has a great variety of interesting shops and a BOOTHS ! Bury has a fantastic shopping centre and market and a quick and easy link to Manchester. The only reason we don't lose more trade to Bury is the pitiful bus service there from Accy.
|
Re: why doesnt accrington have a next?
Clitheroe has a castle, but before the powers that be decided to get rid of a lot of our heritage, and left areas like Broadway looking like a shanty town, we could have competed with the wealthier Ribble Valley towns. We should have high-lighted Accy's past, not knocked it down and tried to make it look like a shabby Milton Keynes. People would have travelled here then.
