Don't quote me on this but I am almost positive that they sell John Bulls at the chippie up ferngore, the reason I think this is because I remember asking hubby what one was when we last went to that chippie, but that was about 3 month ago.

Slight correction - a Dab is a large slice of potato, battered, and fried. Irresistible!
There was one chip shop in Church, I think it was Perkins, who used to do lovely "fishcakes" - fish trimmings (good bits, not skin or anything) between two large slices of potato, battered and fried. Never seen them since, but by 'eck, they were good!

I'd like to correct that statement. A dab itself is simply a slice of potato wwhich is battered and then fried. Most chippies sell dabs. Some sell dab butties. (ie a dab on a buttered teacake/muffin)

I hadn't come across the term "John Bull" but the two potato slices with mince in between and fried together like a sandwich isn't a dab.
