Haven't we just got a huge JJB sports? We need Next, River Island, Accessorize, etc. It would only take one of them with a bit of foresight and the rest would follow.

Or Wardleworths, or the equivalent would be good too!

The reason you don't have a Wardleworths or equivalent is that too many of you preferred to buy your books and stationery at WH Smiths or Asda. It's a bit late to whinge now.

Excuse me! I spent a fortune at Wardleworths, both in the book department and the art department. So don't have a go at me. I used the shop and I was gutted when it shut. Soon after it shut I went into WH Smith to buy something (can't remember what I wanted now) and they didn't have it and they didn't want to order it for me either. I do appreciate your point though, if rather clumsily made, yes it was because people prefered to buy at the cheaper shops. The thing is that shops like Wardleworths can survive in some towns because there is enough business for them and WH Smiths and that wasn't the case in Accrington.

It was the ending of the net book agreement that put the final nail in the coffin for Wardleworths. If you look back at the arguments that the Supermarkets were putting forward at the time and compare their claims then, with the current stock of books in Asda you will see that all they wanted was to cream off the best sellers (most profit) and put an end to the competition by making trading conditions so cut-throat that Wardleworths could not compete. This is a strategy that Asda have pursued for the last twenty years and is the main reason that so many independent retailers have gone to the wall.

Much as I hate to, and I'm biting my tongue whilst doing it, but I do actually agree with you on this one. The same thing is happening to pharmacies now. But, like I said, in some towns the pile em high, sell em cheap shops and the quality shops can sit side by side because they both sell different things.

Well, I'll reserve judgement on that one! But as far as art loving, stroppy cows go, I'm quite reasonable too!
