How long has he got?

Ailing Pope still conscious

Pope John Paul is conscious and his condition is stable, but he is still extremely ill and his blood pressure unstable, Vatican spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls says.
Navarro-Valls said the 84-year-old Pope was still having difficulty breathing.

At this moment the situation is stable but significantly serious conditions remain," Navarro-Valls told reporters at a briefing on Friday.
Navarro-Valls had to choke back tears as said he had "never seen anything like this in the last 26 years" of John Paul's papacy.

On Thursday night, the Pope suffered heart failure and received the "Holy Viaticum" communion which is reserved for those near death. Navarro-Valls said the Pope had asked to be read the "Via Crucis", or the Stations of the Cross, recalling the episodes in the last hours of Christ's life from arrest to burial. The Pope made the sign of the cross during the reading, he said.
"The Pope is lucid and extremely serene," Navarro-Valls added.

One can only hope his people will allow him the dignity of dying with some grace. I trust the prying world of the media would do the same.

Who'd wanna watch him die anyway unless you're a sicko LOL

Do you not think it's a bit sick holding a poll for when he dies.

Am I the only one who is disgusted by the content of this thread? I am appalled that some one can even think of placing bets on the timing of the demise of the Holy Father, but then again its Jason and that's what we've come to expect from him. What is surprising is the replies..what has happened to good taste, morality and decorum?I despair.

Re: How long has he got?

Morality on the web?!?!? Tho the holy father has had a good innings n splender not demorilising the good work he does for the catholic religion just think of those whom dont have much of a chance to live the life he has or much of one anyway due to war, disease etc ...is to put a perspective on things people are people n individual with human nature n all that n if ive been offensive i oplogise as wasn't meant to be that but afterall we all dont think the same nor have same humour n spin on life or death n when your cards up they are up....but that is life like it or not :( i just hope there is a god up there :)

accymel 01-04-2005 14:42

Re: How long has he got?

If there is morality it shouldn't be all over the press n media anyway !!!! i agree he should be left in peace with his family n those close to him like everyone else has a right to.

Though I am no longer a practising Catholic I have to agree with Tealeaf, this thread is in extremely poor taste and will, no doubt, offend quite a few people.

Re: How long has he got?

I have to agree about the bad taste issue here. Discussing his condition is one thing, but having a poll to see when u think he will die is kinda twisted.

Exactly what other things have i done on here Tealeaf? as i would like you to point them out to me,or is it you just dont like me?

I am not religious but didnt think about the roman catholics on here,i was hasty, but i didn't expect myself to come in for flak. The poll wasn't a good idea for some people, but some did express their opinion by voting.
If it is too sick, the moderators will remove it all, that is their job to decide what is appropriate for the site.

I'll think about it a bit longer in future.

I think thats disgraceful Tealeaf of u, i actually felt bad cos of your comment n find that u have voted yourself n didnt have even the gall to hold yer hand up n yet then preach to the rest of us!!! Sorry thats worse than the critism u gave us, least some us are big enough admit to things right or wrong but to vote n then critize others for doing it ...... is very hipercrital n double standard :(

I think the reason it is "all over the press" as you put it is that many Catholics feel that he is their family and want to know what is happening to him not out of morbid curiosity but because they care - much as you would ring up a hospital if a loved one was in there and ask how they were. Remember he doesn't have any close family in the sense of wife and children either. The whole Catholic church is his family. I believe he is also liked and respected by many others outside of the Catholic church and has seemed to be a much more approachable pope than some others in the past. When he passes away, which I hope will be a peaceful experience for him, he will be mourned by many.

Yes people have differing outlooks on things but I agree with Janet that this does seem a bit tasteless and tacky. Oh dear Tealeaf what made you vote?

jason 01-04-2005 22:25

Because he must be as sick as me,according to members on here.

Re: How long has he got?

sorry to point this out people but how on earth can you view this thread as bad taste??? the pope, when he does meet his demise will be going to a better place and meeting his maker and will be rewarded ............no i aint a preacher but sorry if i was laid up with everything failing i would want it to be over and done with and move on to the great big party in the sky , and aint it every holy mans dream to meet the maker !after all they preach that its better than life here on earth!

zindergirl 02-04-2005 00:18

Re: How long has he got?

And just one small point here that no-one has realised the pope is already Dead..........it is only the machines keeping him alive well should i say grounded ?! so maybe you should consider that being in bad taste , when you have got to go you have got to go ! if everyone is sooooooo bothered about this thread why not vent your anger in other ways by sending out prays! god i sound sooooo religious and i aint

Tinkerbelle 02-04-2005 00:24

Re: How long has he got?

Yes I am afraid it is in bad taste some people regard death and men of the Holy Cloth sacred and yes The Pope himself after years of illness may be glad to meet his maker when the moment comes but just switch on Sky News and look at the crowd at The Vatican that will mourn the death of this amazing man, let's walk among them and ask them to take bets on when he will eventually go.

Acrylic-bob 02-04-2005 08:35

Re: How long has he got?

Zindergirl asks “how on earth can you view this thread as bad taste?” There is a part of me which holds the view that if you need to ask why, it would be a futile waste of time to attempt to explain.
However, that part of me will just have to sit on its hands and fume in disgust while I make the following observations.

Throughout his life and his reign the Pope has attempted to provide for Catholics, Christians and the World a model for how a life should be lived and the value we should place on life. Often in the face of criticism and extreme personal danger. Catholic Dogma aside, this is, in itself, both remarkable and admirable.

It may seem curious to some for the Vatican, historically an organisation not known for its openness, to be broadcasting intimate medical details of the Pope’s decline into his terminal hours. It does this at the behest of the Pope himself as his final lesson on the sanctity of life and as a reminder to us that though the manner of approaching old age and death may sometimes be long, painful and distressing, it may still be accomplished with dignity and respect. In doing this, the Pope reminds us that the ending of a life is just as important a component of that life as it’s beginning or it’s middle.

In an age where respect for the elderly and terminally ill has never been at a lower ebb, this is a vital lesson. We are invited by the Pope to witness, as closely as possible, an event which, though it may be uncomfortable and distressing to many, is of direct relevance to each and every one of us.

The willingness to share the manner of what is a uniquely personal event with the whole of mankind should command universal respect. To canvas bets on the progress of the Pope’s decline is to trivialise it and worse, to slap a dying man in the face.

Re: How long has he got?

l too think this was in bad taste. l'm not a Catholic, and feel he has done some bad things as well as some good in his Papacy, but to guess at the time of someones death is just sick. He means a great deal to a lot of people, and for them it's a sad time. A friend of mine, also in her 80's is also dying at this time, it's no time for mirth and sick polls.

Why not start a poll about your own early death, if you're as big as your photograph suggests? :)

Was that aimed at me?

A few more members do not agree with comments made about this thread as they have voted from the last time i came on here last night.
Looks like this is a 50/50 topic that no-one will agree on.

Re: How long has he got?

Sorry Jason i think you do deserve the slagging off and when your time comes i hope nobody has a poll on how long you will fight to live.I have been through this twice and believe me its backing you need, not some sancrimonous idiot having polls on how long you have got to live.As far as i am concerned it is not about Religion here at all but about a human beings life.Enough said on the subject the d**k as you say is you

jason 02-04-2005 13:50

Re: How long has he got?

Great comments mik!!.................But some members do not agree with you.Does that make all them di*ks?
Just shows how mature you are then if you agree with all the slagging off, this is a discussion board, not a lets bring the member to the gallows forum!
Like i have said before,if you dont like the thread, dont post on it!!

Mik Dickinson 02-04-2005 13:58

Re: How long has he got?

Nothing against anybody taking part in a poll.As for maturity i believe you need to look very closely to home here. The immaturity was in starting a poll on such a subject.A thing i would have expected from a child or juvenile, especially the way its been done.Surprised you have so much Karma left the way people react on the forum

As per the other "how long has he got" thread I hope everyone has had there say, the mods will now decide what to do about this thread.

THREAD CLOSED!!!

Re: How long has he got?

Can I just say that we have had a look in the report section and there has only been one report on this thread, so it doesn’t really warrant us deleting or closing the thread? If there had been other reports from other members about this thread then we would have probably done something about it much earlier. If anyone is not happy with the content of a particular thread then please use the report button. We are here to help but if no one reports then things will be left to continue as we will assume that everyone involved is happy, one way or another. Only in certain circumstances will we moderate threads without the need of reports. If anyone starts a thread or poll and then decides it was a mistake they can always ask for it to be deleted by using the report button or by pming one of the mods
As for this thread, it shall remain closed because it brings Accyweb into disrepute.
