Clash of dates

Now that Charles & Camilla are delaying their marriage by one day due to the Pope's funeral taking place on the Friday it will now clash with the Accrington Grand Gala Dinner (whatever that may be) on Saturday April 9th. Do you think somebody should tell them?

I wonder which one Peter Britcliffe will be attending.

What they having to eat? I'd go for the one with the best food, but to be fair to Charles and Camilla they're having a real time with this wedding anyone think it's jinxed?

Re: Clash of dates

why has it been changed? is it out of respect ?would half their guests be at the funeral on friday? or will the funeral get more coverage if their on the same day? i wonder, cynically yours.

I think it was said that Charles is supposed to be at the funeral to represent the Royal Family but don't quote me I wasn't listening properly only heard a bit of it.

Re: Clash of dates

I think as the future supreme head of the Church of England he should represent the Royal Family on this occasion. It’s time thing were resolved and the past put to rest. Charles has always shown the utmost respect for many of the world’s religions which makes me believe that this gesture is genuine and not a conflict of interest. I’m sure many Roman Catholics will be thankful for his gesture.

Accrington Grand Gala Dinner eh? Well, I don’t think this is going to be a decision that’s going to be to difficult do you. I never been to a Grand Gala Dinner before, I’m quite looking forward to it………Anyone got a spare ticket.

No she won't be going. She's not in the family yet and it would be indignant for her to attend in front of the worlds leaders.

agree doug, about the respect charles has shown for religions, but as a catholic albeit non practising,i feel it should be the queen who represents the royal family. P.S. she wasn't going to the wedding anyway.

lol about the Queen not going to the wedding Cashman. I think it would be difficult for the Queen to go the late holy father's (forgive me if I have used the wrong form of address) funeral by nature of her namesakes father who I believe was excommunicated by the Holy Roman Church a few hundred years ago. I don’t think that they have resolved the issue in the last five hundred years, although I would like to believe that the Queen would willingly go if protocol were to permit…..I only pray that neither politics of Church nor State interferes in this final sacred act of reverence for this mans passing……….

Re: Clash of dates

why cant the popes funeral be changed its not as though hes going anywhere...?

edit:

whati mean is peopel who organise these things were aware of diplomatic and royal functions world wide its their job to know so what difference would keeping the pope on ice for one more day make to avoid all the fuss about when and who attended

I wouldn't take my word for it Cashman; I was poor at school in all subjects to say the least, let alone the History of the Church of England and the Reformation.

For the Record I was born into the Church of England, but practice my own beliefs.

:) My respects Cashman. Should we agree that it would have been nice if the Gracious Lady could have attended this reverent gentleman’s funeral in order to represent all of her people, of all religions within this country?

Agreed, good night to you Sir, and may your God go with you.

Re: Clash of dates

l think the Pope's funeral has come along as a handy excuse not to hold the wedding on Friday. The real reason being that Ken and Deidre are getting remarried on Friday in Coranation Street. They first got hitched days before Charles's last wedding in 1981, to the then Lady Diana Spencer.

Fact is sometimes stranger than fiction.

WillowTheWhisp 05-04-2005 07:51

Re: Clash of dates

I haven't watched Corrie for years but somehow managed to see an episode not long ago and was surprised to see Ray Langton back. (Now that's showing my age) It's about time Ken and Dierdre got married again, there's bound to be a big tragedy looming on the horizon for them now.

Now after that nice little thread wander which I just couldn't resist, does anybody know for certain if the Queen can or can't attend the Pope's funeral? I mean Charles is the heir to the throne so if he can go why shouldn't the monarch be able to go too? A-b is usually good at unearthing this kind of info.

Re: Clash of dates

I don't think we had a public holiday when the last two Popes died. I mention both because John Paul I was such a short "reign" (not sure about that word) and I can remember the voting both times and watching for smoke from the vatican but don't remember being on holiday. Does anyone else remember?

jason 05-04-2005 10:33

Re: Clash of dates

Why a public holiday, not everyone is a catholic!!

I think the reason the Queen wont go is because she didn't really like him....IMO.
Charles and the Queen cannot travel together due to protocol anyway.

The Queen isn't going to the wedding but she is going to the blessing afterwards.

Re: Clash of dates

For whatever reason HM the Queen does not do Foreign Funerals, preferring to send a representative in her place.

The death of the Roman Pontiff is not a sufficient reason to declare a public holiday.

Normally the wedding of the heir to the throne would be suffient reason for a public holiday, but both the Queen and Prince Charles are in agreement that such a declaration would invite unwonted comparison with the Prince's first marriage and have decided that the day should not not be marked in this way.
