Anyone interested in table games?
I'm thinking (just thinking at this stage) of organising a table games day in March next year. I thought I'd let you all know to see what sort of interest there was in this kind of thing and also to get some ideas from you all about what sort of things you'd want to see.
My ideas so far include: Competitions in Chess, Scrabble and Monopoly - with trophies up for grabs Fun tables with jenga, connect 4, cluedo available so people can just sit down and play Challenge tables with 'experts' at certain games - reversi, mastermind, and you have to beat the expert or can learn how to play Jigsaw swaps - bring along an old jigsaw (all pieces) and swap it for another one completely free It would all take space over the course of the day with prizes awarded at the end. I haven't considered age ranges as I think that would make it too complex. So what do you think? 1. Would anyone be interested in participating? 2. Would anyone like to help by stewarding or challenging? 3. Are there any obvious games I've missed from my lists 4. Are there any other angles that people would like to see introduced It's my plan to make it mostly free to compete - I'll apply to Awards for All for some funding. Let me know what you think. By the way this is absolutely nothing to do with arts, sculptures or Mid Pennine Arts - just something I've been thinking about doing for ages. |
Re: Anyone interested in table games?
Sounds good to me Gayle, can you say whether it is going to be mostly adult orientated or for children? If it is the former, is the venue likely to be a pub or a hall?:D

Re: Anyone interested in table games?
sounds ok to me, would card games be a possibility?

Would probably be during the day so in a hall is most likely. To be honest, haven't really got that far. I'm just trying to gauge opinions and interest, so if more people say it should be open to kids then that's what I'll try and do. Throw ideas at me about what would appeal to you! |

Re: Anyone interested in table games?
During the day? Would that be on a Saturday? (Otherwise it would exclude anyone who works for a living.)
What is "Awards for All" and why do they provide funding for privately organised ventures? |

You can get all sorts of funding for community events, if you know where to tap into them. Awards for All is one of the lottery funds. |

I've always wanted to learn how to play Bridge, a master class could be another angle to the day. |

Re: Anyone interested in table games?

Black pudding lobbing would be a bit tricky as a table game - now let's talk about black pudding eating and I could take on all challenges myself. I wonder if there are any other odd games that could be considered - or even invented for the occasion? |

Re: Anyone interested in table games?
Looks fun but there are a few flaws in your plan. Mainly the fact that the river that goes through Hyndburn is about 3ft wide and not deep enough to sail a bath tub down. Although there are a few bath tubs and strange items already thrown in there that we could use. I was thinking more of table board games.
What about Trivial Pursuit - or is that a bit old hat these days? |
Re: Anyone interested in table games?
Or backgammon - would anyone be interested in that?

The unusual thing about the Australian event is that it is a Regatta that does not involve water..its the sort of thing that would be suitable for somewhere like Oakhill park. As far as I can see, there is minimal expenditure on the part of the organisers but neverthless it manages to raise substancial sums for charity and in between an awful lot of effort goes into exercising everything from creative juices to muscular effort. I'm not sure where you're coming from on this one, Gayle. Would this "games day" be organised under the auspices of the MPAA? Or of Hyndburn Council? You say you have it in mind for next year; does it neccessarily have to be indoors...what is wrong with the glorious outdoors, other than the weather risk? (admittidly high in Accy) I think the only way you could possibly get an indoor event going would be to push it along the lines of "Accy Indoor Olympic Games"... |
Re: Anyone interested in table games?
How about a frog race?
And before anyone screams "cruelty to frogs" or "that needs water and the great Outdoors", it involves paper frogs on table tops. First you have to make the frog. |
Re: Anyone interested in table games?
what about spin the full bottle ? who it points to they have to sup it....he...hee
how about cocroach racing? shove ha penny? laying on a bed of nails(and have the frog race after...he...he) a lot of the games been mentioned would have to have a time limit on them because some of them go on for ages! |
Re: Anyone interested in table games?
sounds like a good idea and would attract quite a lot of people
unfortunatly unless a game involves a xbox or a pc i wont personaly be interested although throwing black puddings would be fun :D hey if you leave it until june july the weather will be ideal for cow pat flinging you can get some good distance with a dried out cow pat  some of us stronger folk may be able to hit the town hall lmao |

table tennis etc indoors and a few outdoor acctivities probably spelt hyams wrong but i mean the place at the end of moss hall road theres a building there that could be used if you were looking for a location |
Re: Anyone interested in table games?
A Beetle Drive.......they used to be all the rage at church and youth club socials way back in the 60's.........skittles is another one to think about.
I'm sure there would be people interested if it was publicised well. |
